OT: Bourbon Thread
Speaking of bourbon. As I've aged to middle 50s I have grown in my appreciation for bourbon. I enjoy the taste in a glass straight on the rocks and I love the fact that it is an American icon distilled primarily in Kentucky and with good ol' USofA corn [51%+]. I like trying different brands and wanted to know if any of you gents had any comments or recommendations. From my personal experience there are several brands that are exceptional for the price. Here's a few...

$30+/-

$20+/-

I’ll have Wild Turkey 101 straight up, Old Grandad Bottled-in-Bond to mix, and Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel for a splurge.

I usually prefer bourbons in the $40/bottle range. There is a Cincinnati bourbon that is not bad, and I also like the Russell's Reserve. But we usually fall back on the Woodford Reserve.

Unless I am having an Old Fashioned, then I use the cheaper stuff. When you are mixing with the bitters and the simple syrup, why waste the good stuff.

Want bad hang over and destroy your body at same time drink any of the above. Want a nice easy drink with little hangover the next day. Stick to Vodka/Tequila even if it’s not the cool thing at the moment.

I do enjoy a whiskey or bourbon but reserve it to strictly holidays. Four Roses is a good 20ish range one to answer your question.

Anywho, this isn’t a thread for me so carry on as it’s been the craze in the area for 15ish years now.

Buffalo Trace is one of my favorites. Price has dropped somewhat but was going for $55.00 on east coast.

Some of these prices and options are wild to me...in the mid-00s while I was in college, you used to be able to go to The Party Source and but 10 bottles of Blanton's for $39.99 a piece if you wanted to, now that's all but non-existent. Same with Buffalo Trace and Elijah Craig, which are both now going for double and bottle lottery only options here in Ohio. Crazy how much the Asian market picking up whisky has affected the market overall.

My best bourbon for the $$ list was great for years until the word got out. Now I stock up when I can find them

Michters
Buffalo Trace
Even Eagle Rare used to be inexpensive and plentiful.

For or those of you in states where Costco sells liquor like here in MI, check out the Kirkland brand Kentucky Bourbon. Cheap, comes in a big jug and it's surprisingly good. My go to for Manhattens. It's made by Barton 1792 Distillery.

Best of the real cheapies? Very Old Barton. Eastside discovered that gem.

Sorry that it's over $20 (usually ~ $50) so it doesn't really fir this category but I would recommend Horse Soldier Bourbon.

Veteran owned and operated and very good.

Anywho, this isn’t a thread for me so carry on as it’s been the craze in the area for 15ish years now.

Alcohol fads are kind of interesting...

Read a fascinating piece on how Jägermeister got popular. This kid, who grew up in a family of marketers and distributors was told that he needed to find his own product to make his own; the family business would back him up, but he needed to find something of his own to do. So he was jonesing around in Cleveland, looking for something and he went to a neighborhood bar where these little old men were drinking this syrupy drink in the middle of the afternoon. The bartender told him it was a German alcohol called "Jägermeister" but that nobody but little old men drank it. It was cheap, it was foreign...

So this kid gets the idea to market it to college students. His thought: "You drank beer in high school, here's this 'exotic' drink you can get now that you're all grown up." So he markets it on campuses and it blows up; this little-known brand that maybe your grand-father or great uncle drank...now it's "yours." The product went nuts for five-or-six years.

But the kid...he's not a "kid" anymore...sees a problem. Your "College Days" really only go so far, and now his demographic is aging out. So he starts looking around for another product that is cheap, plentiful, and can be the "next link" in the "maturity" chain. He looks at Gin, but gin is a little too "mature." He looks at Whiskey, but Whisky drinkers are really a well-defined sub-culture and they get bent out of shape when their product starts getting too widely marketed. Plus Whisky is expensive. He settles on Vodka: it's cheap and plentiful, it's "foreign," and people have been using it as an ingredient in all sorts of drinks for years. But drinking straight Vodka...well, that's something "only Russians" do. So he starts marketing Vodka to the now 30-somethings: "You drank beer in high school with your buds, you drank Jägermeister when you were in college, but NOW that you're really grown-up and really mature, you don't "drink" those things...you drink Vodka." And suddenly Vodka is the thing, and cheap Vodka is suddenly expensive and there's all these fancy labels and cool looking bottles.

The thing is that you're paying for the label and the bottle. The "high end," "thrice-distilled" Vodka you pay $60/bottle for is basically THE SAME Vodka you get out of the plastic bottle. It's really all about the perception of the thing.

Add to that the American...uh...cultural mob-mentality: When Covid first blossomed on the scene, you literally had people dumping crates of Corona Beer because of the name: Corona. (There's another fad...) When Russia invaded the Ukraine this spring, you had people smashing crates of Vodka...even though most Vodka is either domestically produced or Scandinavian in origin. The American consumer is...well...dumb.

So you have Dan Ackroyd put his name on a bottle of Tequila and people will get it...because. Or you put it in a funky bottle shaped like a skull...

And don't get me wrong: I like Tequila. Good Tequila is a thing of beauty. Same with Scotch. But I think it's really about finding something YOU like, not something that is "the fad." Because "the fad" isn't about the consumer, it's about the marketer.

Bourbon is kind of "a thing" right now. I know in my part of PA, where "Microbreweries" used to be the rage, now all sorts of "Micro-distilleries" are opening.

Find what you like and what fits your budget...and enjoy!

If you are drinking enough to get a hangover, you have other problems than the price of bourbon.

I like a nice glass before bed while watching Hogan's Heroes.

Do people really get worse hangovers with certain types of booze? I feel like it's always been about the amount consumed.

I mainly drink whiskey or scotch at home. I have a really cheap go to Black Velvet (Canadian whiskey). I like with a splash of sprite zero or diet ginger ale.

For Bourbon my go to now is Larceny (I love Buffalo trace but it's a pain to find).

According to research, darker alcohols contain more byproducts from the fermentation/distillery process that can give you stronger hangovers. The key is limit the number of drinks especially on an empty stomach LOL.

I wasn't able to find Buffalo Trace until I went on my October trip to Texas. They limited it to one bottle per customer. I've asked around my neck of the woods and it is a supply/demand issue. The demand has outpaced the supply for now. You can opt to get on an email list from local stores to notify when Buffalo Trace is available. One bottle per customer still applies down here. Glad I brought a couple bottles back with me from Texas.

Old Elk is a top shelf brand that I would recommend. They have several versions but I prefer the wheated bourbon. I've bought the standard which costs $70+/- and I currently have a 7 year aged special brand that was $100+. I don't normally spend that much money on a bottle but on occasion it is worth it to me to have a high quality, smooth bourbon.

It must be market driven. For some odd reason we have Buffalo Trace on store shelves up here.

Northern Michiganders must not be savvy to it. Let's keep it that way.

It's hard to argue with Maker's Mark. My son gave me a bottle last Christmas with the cap dipped in red and black in homage to our Bearcats.

But really, there are many fine ones to enjoy at every price point. A friend just shared some St. Elmo's with me, from the famous steakhouse in Indianapolis. It's infused with Cherry and Vanilla and over crushed ice it rivals the best desserts.

I think there is some secret in the ice too. My brother-in-law just acquired a machine that makes those almost crystalized mini ice balls--much like the ice I remember from Frisch's as a kid. That is the perfect match for savoring any of these at Christmas, or after a hard fought Bearcat victory.

Bourbon is generally darker due to the wood casks its aged in. Make it and age it in stainless steel and it looks like vodka.

I don't own a still to make alcoholic beverages since that is illegal...but I do hear you can use them for making hand sanitizer in the age of Covid.

Buffalo Trace is very scarce in the Dayton area.

A friend of mine in Cincy bought a bottle for me at a Kroger's in Cincy.

They also have plenty of it at the distillery in Frankfort, which is much closer than Michigan or Texas for me.

I was in Vegas last month and walked in a CVS on the Strip and they had plenty of Buff Trace. Go figure.

I did the Bourbon Burn bike tour at the beginning of October. It's a great 3-day event held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. We rode to several great bourbon distilleries over the course of the 3-day rides.

And on one of the evenings we had a bourbon tasting hosted by Freddie Johnson of Buffalo Trace.

**I tend to alternate between being on a bourbon kick or a tequila kick.
