RE: Official Game Thread: Queens
Several good points here. First, I don't think we paid Queens, they're a D1 member of the ASun. I assume they're in their transition year, meaning they can't play in the postseason, but I hope we didn't pay them. We shouldn't have. Rothstein is on top of things in basketball, but he may not be aware they're a D1 program.
I also agree the thought that Oliver may not have 'his guys' in yet. I really feel, however, that he made a mistake with his 3 early signees last year. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against Gregory, Ilic, or Shaw, but maybe Gregory is the only one he should have signed. What we really need is another experienced guard, IMO, who's a shooter and a driver, and with D1 or even juco experience. That could make all the difference with King struggling.
I get that Jancek had an ankle injury, but he said he's practicing. If he's practicing, play him. He only played 8 guys in that last game - Shaw got in for seconds, I think.
So at this point, why not change it up? I think the starting 5 needs to change, and I would start Tipler and Smith. Someone said that would lead to more turnovers, but according to the box, Smith & Tipler had only one turnover between them in the last game. I know Smith was charged with 3 vs. Morehead State, but still, change it up. Bring King & Strothers off the bench, and maybe only put King & Tipler together, and Strothers & Smith. Again, I think if you have King & Tipler they have to respect the 3 pointer, so they have to extend their defense. With Strothers & Smith you have to at least respect the 3 from Smith. It's all dependent on matchups with the other team, but I think a change is in order. I know - I'm not the coach, way above my pay grade - just a suggestion.
Another thing I would suggest is that if you're gonna press, PRESS. One thing I really liked about Bartow was that "black" press we used to run, which trapped and tried to force turnovers. An easy bucket or two early in the 1st or 2nd halves would certainly get things moving. This team seems to come out of the locker room with zero energy, and typically if you press like that, it gets them going much faster. Just my observation, torch me if I'm wrong. Even if it doesn't turn them over, maybe it gets our guys going a little faster.
Finally, I think I might play just about the whole damn bench. Find out who can get the job done with the lights on. This is probably too radical, but change something. Doing the same thing is getting you beat.
