RE: Football Offseason
For years people bitched because they didn’t like the constraints from the NCAA oversight and now there’s absolutely none at all and you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube. College sports as we all knew it is longggggg gone.

Yes, but even before the portal or the grad student transfer changes or the "one free transfer" transfers in college sports had already become more common than ever. I think we are entering an era in which practically every player who isn't happy with his playing time will enter the portal, and practically every player who thinks he can "move up" will enter the portal. Not all will end up actually leaving, of course. And that genie can't be put back in the bottle. I have mixed feelings. As a fan I HATE it. But as someone who likes the idea of people being free to go or do what they want to, it's a good thing for the players. As a fan, I've disliked most of the changes in college sports over the last 40 years. I keep wondering when, or if, I will reach the point where I completely lose all interest, even in Kent State sports..

I get that, and when I was a player that wanted to go elsewhere I knew the repercussions were sitting out a year. I wasn’t happy sitting, but it was the price to be paid. The way this is being run is worse than pro free agency.

The type of season that gets players and coaches noticed. The defense showed some signs of life in the second half of the season which leads me to believe the new DC knows what he's doing and given another year it could be much better. Punter and Kicker are still a problem. Bottom half of the MAC in both again.

But maybe most importantly... Our typical murderers row schedule is more of a voluntary manslaughters row next year. We may even be able to experience a close contest or two in non conference play. Can you imagine? A Kent state football team getting to practice trying to close out a close one BEFORE conference play starts?! Shoot what if we mess around and win one of them? 2 wins before conference play? No one's ever seen such a thing.

Well this post aged poorly really fast.

I would like to take a moment to say thank you to Sincere Carry and Malique Jacobs. They easily could've done the same after last year.

Tony Alford lived in Kent as a small child. His parents Bob and Gloria were active members of our community when they lived here. He has a strong connection to Kent.

Two questions.

1. Is Ulatowski in the portal?

2. Does college allow someone to be a player/coach?

From a career standpoint, I don't see why someone would transfer between mid-major schools. Most of these guys are not going to go pro from this level. Transferring credits will set them back from getting a degree. Did they simply come to college on a scholarship only to be done in 4 years and leave school without a degree? If there are pro ambitions, then I can get it. Let's face it, going pro from this conference is rare. I assumed being in Kent for a free ride would be the selling point.
So these guys are going to transfer, sets them back academically, they'll be done in eligibility in 4 or 5 years, not have a degree, and not go pro?? Yes, you get to run out on the field and start more. If you're at a mid-major, who cares?
I just don't see the logic. Someone feel free to explain this to me.

There is money and an agent involved now. Unless you understand the specifics who knows what’s driving some of the moves.

Guys will take pay cuts to get Head Coach on their resume, see Paul Haynes going from OSU to KSU. Also, I’m sure Lewis will almost double his salary going from KSU HC to OC at CU.

I wouldn't say "rare", AlphaFlash. Last season there were 72 MAC players in the NFL. Granted, that is way less than from P5 conferences. Pro teams will spot talent no matter where they play, as there having been over 200 FCS players in the NFL last season. I don't see the logic in many transfers, either.
