RE: Football Offseason
Ho hum. There goes our chances of a Potato Bowl. Now he can take “be the alpha” “ flash fast” and all his slogans to Boulder. Hopefully, as the administration beats their head against a rock trying to find a viable candidate for one of the worst programs in D1 history it will dawn on him to put more emphasis on hoops. Let’s go Sendy! We don’t need stupid slogans we need wins!!!

Of course, transfers had hardly been rare even before the portal. A big difference is that before players typically left after their first or second year, and more often than not to move downward.
Offers already in from the who’s who, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Penn State, Miami, Pitt, West Virginiai…

Good thing he shut it down with a few weeks to go in the season, got to save yourself for the portal, even if your team needed you to help save the season.

Does Sowder get the promotion and keep it internal or go the "nationwide search" route?

No, we’ll waste $$$ we don’t have with a headhunter/search firm, then sign another P5 OOC game to cover the cost.07-coffee3

RE: Football Offseason
I’m afraid this is the way it will be forever. It more or less always was with coaches but now the players too. Read an article today that it is only a matter of time before teams have to drop out of bowl games because so many players hit the portal they can’t field a respectable team. I guess North Carolina is getting close to that this year and they are a P5 team!!

I’m not sure dropping football and going after other sports is the answer. Power 5 schools play all those sports too. I think college sports as we knew them are done. There more like the NBA G League (or whatever they call it) now .

College golfers turn pro early, Olympic gymnasts retire and then compete in college because they can make a lot of money on social media, wrestling teams cover their weak weight classes from other D1 programs, etc. Schools like Kent just can’t compete. It’s not just money either. What wrestler would turn down a Big Ten school to stay at Kent or any other MAC school for that matter if he can wrestle immediately.

If I’m going to watch pro sports I’ll stick with the NBA, NFL, MLB, European soccer, NHL and the World paddleball league.

RE: Football Offseason
This would be my process for finding a new coach.

1. Call Edelman, just in case.
2. Look at potentially hiring from within. Since Lewis isn't taking a HC job you gotta think there's a good chance we could keep most of the coaching staff. Just like we've done with basketball. Keep a good thing going.
3. Slide into Edelman's DMs on Twitter since he didn't call back
4. Try to get Lewis's input on candidates.
5. Make a fake Tom Brady Twitter account and pay the $8 to get the verification check mark then Tweet "Jules would be a fool to pass up the Kent job!"
6. Probably accept we have to take a flier on another young unproven guy no one's ever heard of and hope he's the next Lewis.

Let's hope 1-5 works.

Yup, and think of some of the best players we’ve seen in a Kent State uniform and wonder how many seasons we might’ve held onto them if the portal was what it is back then. All these hidden gems we’ve cultivated would’ve bolted at the first chance the big boys that never offered them out of high school me sniffing. Mining recruits by getting the table scraps, developing them only to see them get plucked to fill in the holes in their lineups really isn’t the college sports we always enjoyed. I know we can turn around and backfill just as quickly, and Lewis and his staff have done so, but this portal really sucks.

1. Call Edelman, then Josh Cribbs

Edelman would be another young unproven guy who just happened to graduate from Kent.

RE: Football Offseason
Cribbs live in northeast Ohio and had that one year as assistant special team's coach. Not much coaching experience there, but at least some. My guess is it will be a hot, young assistant coach from a P5 that wants to make his bones with a stint as a mid-major head coach.

I agree with all the above comments about the current state of college football. In the past I've gone into all the changes I've witnessed over the last 60+ years. It sucks you can take a player that P5 schools showed minimal, at best, interest in, then lose that player when he/she becomes "ready" for the next level.

He's currently in 6th needing 1177 yards to set the record. He had over 1200 yards last year and over 1300 this year. What's extremely impressive about that is IF he is able to that he'll do it 4 years removed from HS (no redshirt season) and his first year was limited to 4 games because of COVID. If he sticks around for both if his remaining years of eligibility, and stays healthy, he'll probably set the record so high none of us will ever see it challenged.

Taking a step further, if he plays two more college seasons and averages 1300 yards in those two years it would put him top 10 in college football history.
You had to go ahead and jinx us…03-banghead

Cephas, Cooper and Schlee is a helluva 3-headed monster and blow to the program. After all 3 jumped ship it’s time for a total reboot.

It's becoming like free agency in professional sports, only worse since everyone gets one "free" transfer. Fans of professional baseball teams that can't pay to keep their own players are often told, "Don't be a fan of the players, be a fan of the team. i.e whoever is there in a particular season." And it isn't just pro and college. Transfers in high school sports becomes more common each year. Akron Hoban just lost a good player who said he is transferring to Cincinnati Moeller (!) I presume he is going to commute by jet. Of course, Hoban has gotten plenty of transfers themselves, including one from Massillon. Leaving Massillon for somewhere else never happens. Anyway, this is just where we are, at all levels, like it or not.
