RE: WAC/ASUN FBS Joint Venture
Hasn't it been established that the WAC "grandfathered", "golden ticket", "FBS Charter" or whatever you wanna call it has been dead for quite some time?

They had like two years to replenish membership to keep FBS status and failed to do so.

Not from what I hear. But, that’s way down the road. The main problem with that scenario is that it’s the ASUN front office pushing FBS, not the WAC.

Personally, I don’t mind if none of it happens. I like UNA in the ASUN. The football alliance currently functions as a conference. So, the waiver doesn’t really matter for FCS purposes.

It’s a myth. Something the Conference Realignment board tries to make real every so often.

Our AD mentioned the golden ticket in his Ask the AD tapings. I trust him more than anyone posting on this or any other board.

I had never heard about the having 2 years to replenish membership thing. That's a first to me.

And I would trust every other conference doing everything thing they can not to allow another conference to come in and take money away from them. There was no CFP when the WAC was around.

20.02.9.2 Grace Period. Below is the language from the NCAA handbook (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/reports/getReport/90008)

20.6.2.1.1 Eligibility for Reclassification
Before a Football Championship Subdivision institution may apply for reclassification to the Football Bowl Subdivision, the institution must receive a bona fide invitation for membership from a Football Bowl Subdivision conference or a conference that previously met the definition of a Football Bowl Subdivision conference

20.02.9 Football Bowl Subdivision Conference.
A conference classified as a Football Bowl Subdivision conference shall be comprised of at least eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members that satisfy all bowl subdivision requirements. An institution shall be included as one of the eight full Football Bowl Subdivision members only if the institution participates in the conference schedule in at least six men's and eight women's conference-sponsored sports, including men's basketball and football and three women's team sports, including women's basketball. A conference-sponsored sport shall be a sport in which regular-season and/or championship opportunities are provided, consistent with the minimum standards identified by the applicable NCAA sport committee for automatic qualification. (Adopted: 10/31/02 effective 8/1/05, Revised: 12/15/06).

20.02.9.2 Grace Period.
A conference shall continue to be considered a Football Bowl Subdivision conference for two years following the date when it fails to satisfy the eight full Football Bowl Subdivision member requirement due to one or
more of its member's failure to comply with the bowl subdivision membership requirements.

--
My immediate thoughts
1. The WAC was an FBS Conference. They were no longer considered FBS two years after the 2012 season when they failed to maintain 8 FBS members. The language is not clear about their status are they kicked out of FBS forever or inactive until they meet the criteria again?

3. FCS schools wanting to go FBS need a bonafide offer from an FBS conference or a conference that previously met the definition of a Football Bowl Subdivision conference.

Not a lawyer but if I were a school looking to move FBS the question I would ask is - in the absence of a deadline written into the bylaws, can the WAC (as a conference that previously met the definition of a FBS conference) still sponsor a reclassification?

I dont see anything written that implies that the cant

The WAC hasn't had 8 FBS members since 2012-13. Still not sure what a 2 year window means at this point if the WAC hasn't had 8 full FBS members in 10 years.

Also not a lawyer but I take that "conference that previously met the definition of an FBS conference" part in #3 referring to joining a conference that is in the grace period. I would think the 2 years would suffice as the deadline.

I also think that since the WAC has started to sponsor FCS football, basically declaring "hey we're no longer an FBS conference", it would be difficult to regain FBS status regardless of any loopholes or golden tickets. Of course all that is just my interpretation and speculation so who knows. I guess it can be interpreted at the convenience of the powers that be.

The problem is the WACoff “conference” is/was looking to go FBS. As you stated, it’s been well over 10 years. I’m pretty certain those bylaws weren’t intended for a thrown together bunch of FCS to be able to propel themselves into FBS because the WAC sponsored FBS football before.

This was before the CFP era and even if the WACoff conference could snake their way into FBS, they wouldn’t be included in CFP money. Would it really be worth it then? Alabama and SMU aren’t going to take less CFP money so Tarleton and 8 others can use the “WAC name” from 10 years ago.

Liberty proved nothing matters in that regard. It’s all in the rules until someone gets a waiver. The MAC, Sun Belt and CUSA would lose members if the attendance requirement was actually enforced.

As vague as it sounds, what happens is what happens and if there’s a will, there’s a way. Everything else is talk.

RE: WAC/ASUN FBS Joint Venture
My interpretation for what it is worth is that the conference can go to the FBS as was previously planned when NMSU and SHSU were part of the conference HOWEVER, if the NCAA allows them to go to the FBS that would not entitle them to any bowl tie ins or CFP money. It is unlikely that other conferences would bar the WAC-ASUN from jumping to FBS under the old WAC banner, but they would most certainly take issue with the schools in the WAC receiving CFP pay outs. My guess is that the current FBS conferences would argue that the WAC was a part of the old BCS era and therefore is not grandfathered in for CFP funds since their grace period expired, and they came back as an FCS conference. In the event that the WAC does go FBS it will likely have a hard time getting any bowl tie ins, any CFP monies, and any increase in TV revenues. It would without a doubt be a major step below the MAC, Sun Belt, and C USA. What the WAC schools have to ask now is it really worth it to jump at that point? Your 2 best FCS football programs (SHSU and JSU) have already left for C USA, the 1 FBS team you did have (NMSU) has gone to C USA, and the only team remaining with an FCS championship will be EKU who last won a title in 1982. Are you really going to jump to FBS with Utah Tech, SUU, and Northern Alabama tied at the hip? Seems like the best option is to allow the teams that are excelling in FCS currently to rise to the top and receive an invite from the MAC, C USA, or the Sun Belt. Teams that are on their way and could be FBS in the next 10 years from the WAC/ASUN are EKU, Tarleton St, Austin Peay, and possibly SFA. Seems like resources would be best spent in those programs trying to receive an invite to one of those 3 conferences rather than trying to make this monster conference move up. This is FCS teams best chance since 2010 to prove they are able to be competitive with SHSU, JSU, KSU, and JMU out of the way for the FCS playoffs. If someone can find a way to make the national title game and or beat SDSU/ NDSU in the playoffs to get there they will prove without a doubt they can compete in the FBS and will receive an invite. Thats the biggest red flag for Tarleton currently.

Says the one who school is woefully underfunded for FBS has no fan and little alum support and will be nothing but cannon fodder at the FBS level.

It’s more about success on the field and a few good years on the grid iron for SHSU doesn’t qualify them financially. Even your AD privately tells others this going to be an uphill battle for us.

Never said it did. You obviously did not read through the whole paragraph I typed. Sam Houston was invited up purely based on merit of being a perennial power in the FCS. We did not get invited for facilities or fan support. Sam Houston made 3 national title runs in 10 years of FCS play and is one of two schools to beat NDSU in the process of winning a national title. Tarleton has yet to make a playoff. Maybe win a game against Sam Houston before you speak. You lost 40-21 against a Sam Houston team that had nearly all of their starters redshirted and was playing a bunch of Freshman and 3rd stringers. Despite lack of funding Sam Houston has proven to be a successful athletic program in Division 1 which is why we are headed to C USA and Tarleton keeps trying to buy their way in.

RE: WAC/ASUN FBS Joint Venture
They could join fbs as a independent conference for a year or 2 then get like 1% cut til a new deal comes in

Obviously you either have not been on this sight long enough to know my feelings about Tarleton and FCS.

I just find it funny that someone from SHSU would be so pious about their school moving to FBS and telling others what and how they should wait.

Obviously Liberty didn't follow your suggestion.

And, if football is the only reason you believe that SHSU was invited to FBS over a transition school then your school truly is in financial trouble from day 1.

Everything in the FBS will be more expensive with the same fan and alum support = lack of funding. Gonna be fun times for the neighbors of the Prison.

RE: WAC/ASUN FBS Joint Venture
Liberty, Liberty, Liberty. Liberty has more money and has a religious affiliation that Tarleton and North Alabama don’t. Their path to FBS was never the same as your dreams. The WACoff conference has nothing in common with Liberty.

We’re cannon fodder in the FBS, you’re cannon fodder in the FCS. Clearly, CUSA thought lil broke Sammy was a better choice for the big times than Tarleton, even with the all money you beg for from your school’s main campus in College Station. So clearly, football play DOES qualify us for FBS ball.

Do you know you how stupid you sound repeatedly telling any and every Sam fan who comes onto this board the same thing over and over and over again? Do you genuinely think any Sam fans are unaware of our own issues? Or were you educated at a farmers college?

Don’t be a clown! You’re comparing yourself to a school in transition.

If the shoe fits wear it.

I dunno, just think it’s a little ridiculous that a Tarleton freakin State fan of all people decided to do a broken record impression about SHSU’s FBS move. No need to argue whether or not we’re a good candidate for CUSA, they picked us over your former JUCO, despite the lobbying and begging from your overzealous president.

Be nice to Bearkats and Aggies. We hold votes in your only chance to make the jump to big time football soon, even though y’all clearly don’t deserve to be at our table.
