Great find from Olivari there. And then a great find from Sheffield, but Fiedler drops this one and gives up a cheap foul. 62-59 Rice. 1:18 left.

Why the hell are we fouling with under 2 minutes left and the lead. This is one of my pet peeves with the the mens and women's teams; we simply don't use the clock as our ally.

What a struggle but finally played well enough down the end to win.

RE: MBB vs. Prairie View
Rice wins 70-62. My takeaways:

> Loved the 1v1 defending from our guards. Thought we did really well most of the night getting a body in between the driver and the basket. Special shoutout to Olivari, whose defense I have been critical of. Multiple times tonight where he stonewalled his man (should also obviously get credit for the 27 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals)
> Really impressed at how good a rebounder Sheffield has become (15 tonight). If he continues to impact the game in that respect and defensively, he'll get minutes regardless of whether he's scoring or not. That's reflected in his team-high 38 minutes tonight
> Good passing game from Fiedler. Like I've said, he can pick apart a lot of D1 teams. But it's the games against better opponents in which he needs to prove himself

Back from the game. I think Evee is a little banged up right now. He needed to be re-taped in the 2nd half and thankfully when he came back, he made 2 straight 3-pointers. But we obviously need a healthy Evee.

We need to bottle our 2nd half performances at home, and figure out a way to extend that to 40 minutes at home. And maybe just try for 20 minutes of that effort on the road (I'd like more, but I'll take 20 at this point).

RE: MBB vs. Prairie View
Really strong game from Sheffield tonight. Team clamped down on defense during the last part of the 2nd half, especially on Tekorian Smith, who had 19 points with about 15 minutes left in the 2nd half and 0 for the rest of the game.

Once again we did not see much help inside from Seryee, who had several minutes in the first half but got yanked early in his relief stint in the 2nd half and did not see the court the rest of the game. He has to get quality minutes and improve for this team to cause any damage in CUSA.

I have been surprised several times now that Pera is utilizing Jake Lieppert to bolster perimeter defense during crunch time, but he has responded pretty well to the challenge.

Overall, nice to grind out a win when the 3 - pointers are not falling. I have enjoyed watching this team so far this year. Looking forward to the games over the holidays

Prairie View is the 5th best team in one of the worst conferences (SWAC).

Probably true. PVAMU lost to UTSA by about the same number of points. However, they also beat Washington State 70 - 59 so you knew that the Panthers could play some solid basketball.

RE: MBB vs. Prairie View
The SWAC has wins over Colorado, California, Washington State, Arizona State, UTSA, Dartmouth, Arkansas State, Wichita State, SFA, and a last second loss at then #14 TCU. Usually, they play all those types of games on the road, but to the Pac 12's credit, they ended up playing quite a few games on SWAC home courts.

They're not going to be one of the worst conferences in the country with the transfer portal firmly entrenched in NCAA basketball. PVAM's roster had 14 transfers I believe (all but two players). I'm not convinced they are going to be one of the contenders in the SWAC this year, although their leading scorer and rebounder has missed their last four games due to an injury I guess (he was in street clothes last night and looked close to returning). So maybe when he returns, they'll be a lot better offensively. They already were impressive defensively.

Turning to Rice, I know elw might find this hard to believe (actually he's hinted as much to this point) but I definitely see a better effort on our defense this season. In particular, I think Sheffield and Olivari are playing much better defense, and I also like what I see on the defensive end from the freshman Mason. We're still not where we need to be defensively, but at least there is more of an effort in that regard.

More concerning to me is our offense. We shot 37 percent in 3-pointers last year and are down to 32 percent this year (yes, we lost Pierre, but we added a few new shooters too). We've got 3 players under 30 percent in 3-point shooting, and to be honest, most of our 3-pointers are relatively uncontested shots. Hopefully, that can turn around because that's going to be a big issue if it doesn't.
