RE: Portal
Not sure this has been posted, but BG landed a GREAT transfer in QB Connor Bazelek. He will be one of the better QBs in the league next year. He was Co- Freshmen of the year in the SEC and threw for 2,300nyds last year at Indiana. Congrats BG.

It's too bad for BG that they can't get Scott Loeffler to join the portal... LOL

Loeffler has earned the opportunity to show us if he can keep moving the program forward, I think.

As for Bazelek: He seems like a good get with a high ceiling. We'll see how this plays out.

RE: Portal
When the winter recruiting season is over we should do an All MAC transfer in team and an ALL MAC transfer out team. Pretty sure BG has the QB spot on the "in" team. We added a pretty good RB from Iowa and lost 5 RB and a OT to Kentuckey.

I think BG's biggest loss is Ty Broden, 6-7 WR. I believe he committed to Arkansas over Penn St and Oklahoma. He was 5-9 as a junior in high school and grew 10 inches since but still ran a 4.4 something 40. I don't think we used him well in the last couple years.

He's probably the headline loss. Broden has a huge ceiling. (Literally!) Given his tools, he seemed to underperform in Bowling Green, and I'm not sure why. He could be a monumental steal for Arkansas. If he turned out to be all-SEC, it wouldn't completely shock me.

He's not the only loss, though. (This is the world we live in, I guess.)

I'm also bummed about our defensive coordinator heading to Navy. There was some real flashes of brilliance on defense this past season, and I'd hate to see the team take a step backward.

I don't like it either. I thought I heard they are going make students sit out a season if they transfer more than once as an undergraduate. That will help a bit.

(I like to think of this as the Jarret Doege Rule. West Virginia, Western Kentucky, and Troy fans know what I'm talking about.)

Our sometimes starting kicker is not using his extra year of eligibility but finding an average placekicker isn't hard. Rockets have added a couple of P5 transfer oline players to shore up the weakest unit on the squad. Good news after the team lost a couple key guys to the portal last yr, although it's only January.

One of Toledo's top wideouts, Demeer Blankumsee, entered the portal this week and subsequently committed to play for Memphis. Pretty big loss, IMO. Some say he might've had bad blood with a few of the UT coaches.

RE: Portal
The portal is overdue for the student athletes. Coaches, administrators, students all can change schools without a penalty. Meanwhile, coaches can bury a scholarship guy on the bench or not renew their scholarship. Only fair that the athletes have the chance to move around as well. That said, building some guiderails into the system makes sense too. I would like unlimited transfers but only once without a sit out year. Requires athletes to be more careful in their decision making, and limits the free agent mentality. Also would put some emphasis back on the redshirt developmental year which in the past was really good for some guys transferring into the MAC. Gives a kid the chance to both develop their game without pressure and refocus academically and make sure they complete degrees. Maybe, keep an exemption if an athlete transfers back to a previous school where they have academic relationships and support systems-we'll call it "the Boogie Coleman rule".

One thing the portal does separate is the programs that have a strong overall culture and really good support systems vs the schools where the sports teams aren't as good at meeting the overall needs of the person/student/athlete. Toledo has not had much portal attrition in any of their top 3 sports programs-football, WBB, MBB. Largely, because their players enjoy the program, do well academically and feel supported. Toledo will have some end of the bench players transfer out, but lose few starter types. You can't stop every good player from making a jump to the bigger time, but you can create a home where the reasons to stay mostly outweigh the advantages elsewhere.

Well said pono, it is a double edge sword, but the student athlete should have there freedom, especially since you never get your college years back.
