Coaching Search Thread
Coming up for air after lots of digestion. It probably makes sense to have a dedicated search thread, perhaps only for the balance of this week - I think this gets done quickly.

My preference, in order:

1. Matt Campbell
2. Dave Clawson
3. Derek Mason
4. Brian Hartline
5. Alex Golesh

I definitely prefer experience as we move into the Big 12, but we could obviously run the retread risk with a few of these candidates. I feel like Campbell, Clawson and Mason could all do well with the recruits they could draw from our region, and they're still hungry enough to be up for the challenge. If not those three, get a young guy in who will innovate on offense, recruit well, and energize Nippert. Hartline and Golesh seem to fit that bill.

I'd be really happy with 1 and 2. It's always harder for me to judge assistants and what they bring, but Hartline's recruiting connections are exciting. Seems like he might be a star.

RE: Coaching Search Thread
My two picks are Minter Jr and Guidugli.

Guidugli is a true Bearcat who brings continuity in the program.

Minter Jr is qualified and his hiring would pay a karmic debt. His dad did good things for the program when it was a thankless job with zero resources, then was shown the door without being given a fair shot to show what he could do in the BE. Jr is a very promising DC at the elite level who should be able to put together a killer staff (and maybe even keep Gino).

The Minter candidacy is Cincinnati insular fandom at its finest.

The guy has been a decent coordinator for a year, is not at all involved in recruitment at Michigan, and has spent more time in the NFL than the NCAA and has next to no independent coaching network or established recruiting network. In every way, he is the least qualified candidate, but his dad coached here two decades ago, so he's a top candidate.

The worst quality you can look for in a major college coach is "hometown guy" / "likely to stay." Hire the best available candidate and deal with their departure after they've won a lot of games.

Also, Cunningham should be fired if he gives serious consideration to Guidugli or Coombs. If they wouldn't be serious candidates at one of your peer schools (think: Baylor, Oklahoma State, TCU), they shouldn't be a serious candidate at yours.

If Deion would then I would be good with it. Otherwise I lean toward Hartline as I think he provides the best chance to build on the local recruiting that Fickle did so well. He also might breathe new life into the offense.

IDK if I would bank on Gino staying forever. I can remember a BCJ podcast when the Michigan State search was happening and Gino told Chad he had his bags packed and ready to go to East Lansing.

As someone else posted, in today's landscape I don't know if there is a such thing as a lifer anymore. Just leave the place better than you found it and make me a sandwich on the way out the door.

My issue with Deion is is he really that good of a coach or is he just being successful because he has 4* star recruits beating up on teams of 1 and zero stars? Once in a conference where everyone can get the good recruits would he still be successful?

Good question and to be perfectly honest I didn't see enough of his team's games to tell if they were well coached but he did get the recruits and that's a big part of the battle.

We're assuming he'll be able to out recruit the remainder of the BIG 12. So if he goes head to head with Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and loses even with similar quality players, I can live with that.

I believe that was because everyone had their bags packed and were ready to leave. Fickell basically accepted that job and his wife came out of the woodwork to nix it...that would've been Gino at OC at MSU, which likely would've been high enough, if successful, to become HC here straight away when Freeman left.

Matt Entz, Jamey Chadwell, Deion Sanders and Tom Herman, would make sense for me.

Don't forget Matt Campbell turned down Michigan State, would he want to leave ISU?

If his name is coming up for what most would see as a “lateral” move then yes I’d say he wants to leave. Probably his camp leaking his name.

I've seen Sherrone Moore, a name I didn't know, pop up on a few lists. Young, African American, with great recruiting chops. Co-Offensive Coordinator/ O-Line Coach at Michigan.

I guess I don't understand hiring a guy in Campbell who went 1-8 and finished in last place in the B12 this year getting hired so we can start a rebuild ourselves in the B12 next year. But that's just me.

Same.

As best I can tell, the biggest bullet point on his resume is "turned bad program to just OK program."

I'd much rather take a chance on a guy who might be great than a guy who has been pretty average.

I'm not sure I've seen any especially credible "insider" lists. But I just looked at what seemed like the 6 best candidate lists I could find: 3 local and 3 national. Exactly one name made all 6 lists: Jesse Minter.

I agree with you in that he's well down on my list, but simply pulling out your favorite "Cincinnati insular fandom" trope is a major overstatement.

Bolded, regarding Coombs, I think he was tabbed as the interim because he won't be a candidate for the head coaching position, nor is he a threat to leave when Fickell separates the wheat from the chaff and all those other guys pack their bags.

I mean that with no disrespect to Coach Coombs but my guess is he plans to finish his career at UC in some capacity and can be counted on to be a trusted figure for our players during these hours and days before the new coach is announced.
