I called this one.

Do you want a cookie? Or would you rather just have a sticker?

Keep in mind that all these guys going into the portal still have the option to stay here once a new coach is hired. Getting a guy hired quickly is important.

This is truth. We have no idea who comes in and neither do the players. They are doing exactly what they need to do for themselves in this landscape. Crooms is the least surprising portal hit. With this offense I would have been surprised if he stuck around.

He loved the last two years' of our offense.

Thinking now that it's well within the rules and acceptable these days, there's a high degree of probability that these guys and more end up where TL does.

Here’s a couple non-WMU guys that have recently entered the portal:

Ball State QB John Paddock and Miami QB Brett Gabbert. Both started against the Broncos this year and were defeated. Gabbert was hurt on and off this year.

Can Palmer Domschke play both ways? Gonna need a combo DT/WR to fill in these gaps. Couple more days and we're going to hope John Gill's zombified corpse can get a medical redshirt for one more year of eligibility.

I call BS... no way Crooms loved running deep routes all day in an offense scoring 10 to 12 points a game and losing to teams like EMU and NIU and not even challenging for MAC west championships...

He put up with it... showed confidence in his coaches like good players do... When Lester got canned he was given freedom.

You have no idea about any of that, and read what I wrote, I said last two years. Not this season.

TL didn't work his spreadsheet well... he left his squad too weak on offense in two key areas... OL and QB... thats hard to do in year 6 without some sort of incompetence at HC.

Ok... so he spent this year... (which literally is one of the last two years)... running routes without a QB who could hit him regularly due to poor arm and even more poor OL and losing yet again to teams like BGSU, EMU, NIU.... etc... and decides its time to move on...

Color me not at all surprised.

RE: Portal
Next year is going to be atrocious. Fleck's first year actually had a solid core to maybe get us to 6-6, but sadly, a lot of key guys went down before the season began: our three starting WRs, the linebacking corps, Terry Davisson, Tevin Drake (to a torn moral conscience). And we went 1-11, despite having some really talented returning guys out there with TVT, Johnnie Simon, Justin Currie, Donald Celiscar, Travonte Boles... Young offensive and defensive lines making it tough on the vets who stayed.

In a couple of days we aren't going to have any key returning guys to even get injured in camp.

The only way 2023 is going to be remotely bearable is if the new coach basically hauls in 20 transfers. Maybe you are right and this is a perfunctory move and some guys stay after buying in with the new coach, but right now, it looks like our upwardly mobile new AD is gonna have to wait for 2025 for his key football hire to do something more than bupkis and punch his ticket to a bigger paycheck.
