You do know that 9 out of 10 transfers have had their scholarship pulled, right? Meaning the coach told them to leave.

Coaches can just pull scholarships from players and tell them to leave?
I didn’t know they could do that!

Im talking about all coaches everywhere. And I’d throw basketball coaches in the same lot too. These new rules make it hard on everyone. Out of control.

Is that number verified or just opinion? Seems high. You make it sound like the size of the portal is the coaches' fault.

I think they can, but supposedly it rarely happens without cause. My understanding is what happens more frequently is that a coach may tell a player that he doesn’t think it’s going to work out for him in the field or court and not to expect much playing time if he stays. At that point the player has a choice to make. Stay for the free ride and or go someplace where he can play.

I've been told this by various staff members at a number of programs. And no, I wouldn't pin that all on the coaches. Recruiting is a projection assuming a player puts in a certain amount of effort among other things, which is clearly an inexact formula.

Some players come in and just don't put in that work, some players don't fit into the culture a coach is building or built, some get in trouble, some players aren't happy with being a reserve so they chase playing time, some get home sick, some struggle with the classwork side of the equation and some get injured.

At the end of each season, coaches meet with the player and do a bit of an annual review. They discuss what the player wants and what reality says. If the player isn't holding up their end of the bargain, they are told what the future at the school is looking like if nothing changes. Some have their scholarships pulled and some are given the reality that if they want playing time an FCS program might be a better option. To me, that latter option may as well be a pulled scholarship.

Very rarely does a player transfer out to move up a level. And the portal numbers prove that out. Transfers for the most part move down a level, go to JUCO or never find an actual landing spot.

RE: 2022-2023 Football Roster Changes
Not final of course pending further transfers and whatnot, but I took some time and tried to compile how much production we'd be losing from this year. I used cfbstats for the data and below is how much production for (what I deemed) significant statistics the players leaving accounted for. I also have it broken down by player but right now that looks like an absolute mess. If I find out there is a website that does all of this for you easy I'll be pretty disappointed.

Very interesting. Thanks for the effort. I wonder what those rushing yards and receiving yards numbers would look like if Blake and Ali returned. My guess is those numbers are so high, largely due to those two guys leaving.

So, according to those numbers Watson leaving accounts for 96.5% of the rushing yards leaving the program at this time and Ali accounts for 59.4% of the reception yards leaving at this point.

Is that data just those entering the transfer portal or all those graduating as well?

RE: 2022-2023 Football Roster Changes
Updated spreadsheet with players stats individualized. I tried to make it as readable as possible. But I at least put it in a format that shouldn't make it that hard to update if we suffer a few more transfers out. Couldn't do much for the Offensive Line or Long Snapper since they don't have a lot of stats other than "games played" on their record. Also included a few players on offense on the defensive sheet when they recorded defensive stats (tackles).

Is Ali Jennings staying? That’d be huge.

It really was confusing. At first I thought, oh this is his NFL announcement. Then I read more and it says he's staying in school. So I thought AWESOME. Never occurred to me he'd transfer elsewhere. WTF? So much for this "most guys transfer down" stuff. Our two best offensive weapons will be transferring out and up. What is wrong with our program that guys don't want to stay around?

Probably has something to do with not winning games. Guess we're just gonna be just awesome next season.

Oh well. I had already counted him as a loss. Just was hoping it was for the nfl and not another school.

Yeah. Me too. It just feels like a betrayal or rubbing salt in the wound when they leave for another program. I can understand leaving for the NFL. What more do these guys want? They get lots of playing time, they're going to the NFL at some point regardless. They're playing in arguably the most exciting non P5 conference. Its hard to build a good team when your best guys keep leaving.

Yeah the announcement definitely had me puzzling a little bit. i understand the not winning aspect, but he was getting targeted by the NFL while he was here, he basically had the keys to our offense and was our only viable #1 option so why go somewhere else where the PT is uncertain just baffles me. Yeah you might win some games but your not gonna lead the nation in yards matching against P5 corners

Well at a P5 school, at least he'll have passes thrown to him, not over and short of him.

But at that P5 there are 4 other Ali Jennings running around so good luck getting that spotlight again. He was a diamond in the ruff here, now he’s going to be working at a gem store.

When will people realize that every program in America deals with this (hurt more at the P5 level)? Its felt more on our level. Look at JMU, for example, last year lost several players, including Antwane Wells...in a year they were moving up from FCS to FBS.
