Pretty even split between the top four with Navy and Temple having fallen behind after pretty good starts, eight teams have played in the championship game in the eight years it has existed. UCF is a nose in front of everyone else and probably can make a legit claim that would be hard to argue with if they win this one. It's a really small sample and probably says more about individual coaches than programs because of the size of sample.

I think UCF and Cincy have shown they can sustain succes as a program, Houston has done well but in a Texas league they will have some of their conference AAC advantages nullified. UCF is probably the best positioned right now, with zero advantages they have had a built sustained top 30 type program with top 20 potential. I expect that success will continue, bolstered by 60k+ student body to generate fans, alums, and donations from.

The most surprising thing to me is that South Florida is now the worst of the 1.0 members.

Most people would have thought the incumbent Big East members were going to dominate.

No argument from me. Not only does UCF have the most wins/best winning percentage, they are also the only AAC program with 2 NY6 wins, and they played LSU tough without Milton in the 3rd one. Houston also has an NY6 win, and Memphis and Cincinnati were respectable in their Cotton Bowl and Peach Bowl appearances vs. Penn State and Georgia, respectively. I'd say AAC 1.0 was a success in football, and a slight disappointment in men's basketball thanks to historically strong programs like Cincy, Memphis, Wichita, Temple, and Tulsa being down for periods of time. It's been a fun ride, regardless.

That may be true, but UCF hasn't dominated the AAC in its first decade.

Five different AAC programs have won championships between 2013 and 2022, and seven have finished in the AP top 25. In addition, an eighth (Tulsa) finished in the CFP poll a year or two ago.

When people review the first decade of the American, they'll take note of the fact that there was quite a bit of variation in the number of dominant programs from year to year - - probably as much or more than there was in the Big Ten during the same period.

If we win on Saturday, that will be 5 out of 10 AAC titles and 4 NY6 games. The next closest is Cincinnati with 3.

We also have what nobody else in this conference could do and that is a NY6 win. We didn't just show up, but we won twice and lost a close 3rd to a team that went on to be one of the most dominant teams in the last decade the next season.

We may not have dominated the conference Bama style for 10 years, but it is undisputed that we had a better 10 year run than any other school. And we did it with 4 different coaches. Gus could be the 4th coach to win the AAC and have a NY6 appearance in the last 10 years with UCF. That is exceptional for any school.

Houston beat FSU in the 2015 Peach Bowl.

True. In my defense I try to pretend like that season didn't happen. Which makes our W/L records in the AAC that much more impressive considering we did it with an 0fer season and are still the winningest school in the AAC.

And all of those totals included UCF's winless season in 2015....which makes their overall AAC totals that much more impressive...as that was the only season out of 10 that UCF had a losing conf record in the AAC.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but it would be an interesting storyline if Tulane wins next week and then goes on to become the torch bearer for the new version of the AAC. This would be sort of a passing of the torch. Obviously hoping UCF wins, but Tulane has been a great story this year with all that program has been through.

I expect just the opposite.

For the next two years I’m certain that the Big12 will receive the majority of CFB coverage in Texas.

Houston will benefit more from that as compared to the other three incoming schools. All four are moving up to a P5 league, but that perception will be reinforced in the minds of the public much more in the state of Texas (and a few other states where B12 has a significant presence).

I’ve seen a lot of Cinci fans running their mouth the last few years about how they own the conference and that’s a classic case of recency bias. Funny to think about about how USF, Cinci, Rutgers, etc would say UCF would be a bottom feeder in the Big East when we were working to join. UCF knew it could compete and came in and proved it on the field.

Anyways, Tulane’s had a heck of a season, and they might very well win next weekend. But it won’t change the overall body of work for UCF. So that is what it is.

It’s been a fun conference, better overall than I think most national pundits expected, and one that earned a lot of respect as evidenced by the de-facto NY6 bid. Good luck to everyone’s programs moving forward.

You should hoist a banner... Maybe get some T shirts and rings made.

Well said. I agree. And you're even forgetting UConn who after there early National Championship in basketball became a mid/low tier AAC team.

Honestly, basketball was a huge disappointment to me because this Conference had so much potential on that front. We had programs with real winning tradition. Had you told me Houston would become a national power and that we'd add Wichita State...I'd have thought this would be a 4+ bid League nearly every season.

UCF is a nose in front of everyone else and probably can make a legit claim that would be hard to argue with if they win this one. It's a really small sample and probably says more about individual coaches than programs because of the size of sample.

Between 2014 and 2022, the similarities between the conference records of UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, and Memphis are striking.

Memphis will be king

Memphis and Tulane may be BATTLING KINGS.

I would trade you 4 years of Tuberville for 3 years of Carey.

It's amazing how close Temple was to the top 3/4 before Carey happened.

Glad to see Tulane wake its football program up at the right time, the AAC needs Tulane, ECU, and Memphis to carry the weight. UTSA will also do some heavy lifting, but dunno about the rest of the newcomers.

I think too much emphasis is put on brands and too many folks equate brands with good football, but I think the AAC just may be alright going forward in making new brands successful.
