I THINK he meant to say that it's not like this was an NCAA tournament team WITH Vik and to quit using him being hurt as an excuse for ALL the team's problems. That's just a lazy cop out.

Thank you translator!!

Here is the divide amongst this board. (Someone should create a poll)

UC up 13 vs Tulane and 16 @ ECU.
"Wes can't coach" group: "Being in that position, they should have found a way to hold on and win".

UC up 13 vs Tulane and 16 @ ECU.
"Vik is hurt" group: "They shouldn't be expected to win without their best player."

What bothers me about both games is they were in a position to win or tie in both and the final UC deciding play to get a shot in both games were head scratchers. And both were after a timeout to draw it up. Not that the shots didn't fall, that happens, it was the play call and design themselves. That, and the chuck it from 3 offense, is what has me questioning Wes. Not what kind of personnel he has to go to battle with.

I'd like to be in a third group
UC up 13 vs. Tulane and 16 @ ECU
"I'm pissed as hell that we lost, but I understand why it happened and am not calling to fire a coach over it in the first full season of his tenure and say he is a terrible coach in general after a decade of being a successful coach."

RE: UC at ECU game thread
I hope Wes is the guy to get UC back on the national stage. I'd even go as far as saying I think he will, but Its difficult to get wildly excited about what's happened so far. He's won one game in 2 years that he probably had no business winning, but he's had a bunch of wtf losses.

Maybe I'm overestimating the talent on the team. I always think they are just thisclose to going on a ten game winning streak 04-cheers

I'm in the "roster is very flawed group." I was impressed with how the team was playing from early December up until the second half of the Tulane game.

The Tulane game didn't bother me as much as most, because I think Tulane is really dynamic on offense and the two ways you beat them are interior defense and dominating the glass. The Vik loss killed those two areas. I also thought UC mostly got good shots down the stretch against Tulane, just missed the shots they made all game.

Last night's loss bothered me more than the others have this year. However, even had they won, I'd have still pointed out their huge issues rebounding the ball and defending inside without Vik. That was an enormous issue regardless of the result. I said Vik was the guy they couldn't lose long before they actually lost Vik. The dropoff from Vik, to everyone else in the front court is absurd.

However, there's plenty to be disappointed with at the end of the game. I thought they stopped running their offense (which I didn't think was the case against Tulane). I thought they slowed it and tried to Isoball it. They just aren't built for that. It's why they struggle at the end sometimes. They are dependent on running offense for open jump shots, or bigs rolling to the basket. They ran their offense effectively most the game then abandoned it late. I honestly didn't think that was the case against Houston or Tulane...they just missed shots they have to make..but at least they got good shots.

I think this may have been an overreaction to blowing those late leads against Houston/Tulane and trying to do things differently this time. But this team just isn't built to play that way.

In that sense...I was disappointed with how Wes handled the end of the game, but it doesn't erase for me, how well he had this team playing when Vik was healthy (and for the brief time Rob was back). In the end it's one game, with a roster that's not very deep to begin with and has too many injuries. I'm still optimistic that as Wes builds his program these kind of things will be easier to withstand.
