Soccer doesn't need to do anything to have more fans, its the most popular sport in the world. If the interest is making it more popular in the US, that sounds like US problem and not a world problem.
Teams park the bus all the time and still get scored on. Iran is gonna park the bus on Tuesday and its on us to get a goal. Coaches whine all the time when their side can't find a way to score a goal.
It's absolutely a US problem. Why would you not want the biggest sports fans in the world to be more involved in the sport? Every sport in the US has changed rules over the years to increase offense, for better or worse. Clearly there has been many studies to show greater interest with more offense with US fans. And let's face it, there is too much competition in the US for soccer to overcome without a little more offense. For sports anywhere to thrive, you need fan support. The US is a lucrative market.
But I understand that any rule changes shouldn't change the main nature of the game. I don't think the three things I proposed would do that. Doing other things such as changing the offsides rule (which is a call that is often blown by lower level referees) would change the game IMO.
It was exciting to me and that's just my opinion. If you take out the context then yeah it sucked. But England honestly had every expectation to blow us out and we held them scoreless.
Soccer, unlike any other sport, is immune from end-user input. It is more a religion than entertainment.
Baseball, our “national sport”, adopted the designated hitter, instituted replay review and will be adopting computer-called balls/strikes. Plenty of traditionalists (me included on the d.h.) would have preferred those changes not happen. But no one to my recollection ever suggested that these proposals were simply not open to consideration and debate.
Soccer is different. There is, at least to my mind, no reason why Flagship’s rule changes wouldn’t improve competitive play. Someone who watches more soccer than I do could probably explain to me why those suggested rule changes are not a good idea. But that’s no how soccer works. We don’t get to debate rule changes. It instead is a form of heresy to even suggest them.
Not that it much matters. I probably wouldn’t watch much soccer even if the game were made more interesting.

That is a good analogy. I grew up playing baseball since I was 4. I haven't watched a game in 2-3 years (except ODU baseball). They made the game into an arcade game. And now they want to ban shifts so you cant even play defense.
Soccer has become way more interesting to me. Its 90 mins of play that takes 2 hours with one small halftime break. There may not be scoring all match but there is typically action.
Baseball is 3 hours with tons of down time plus commercials, etc. I realize thats just my take, but I cant see how baseball is more entertaining. Baseball was my life for 20 years

Banning the shift in baseball is a joke. Baseball has always been a game of "hit it where they ain't ". The hitters that can adjust are the ones that are most valuable.
All you need to know about WC soccer. In the 2006 WC the Zidaine head butt. What a pu$$y. Italian player said something about his sister. What a pu$$y. If he played a real professional sport he would not survive. He could never have survived with professional trash talking. What a pu$$y.

Well, the Italian did tell Zidane that his sister was applying to VCU….

MLB has ruined baseball and turned it into a mindless home run - strike out parade with no other skills valued. Pitch clock, dual DH, banning the shift, extra innings free base runner. All but guaranteed ads are coming on jerseys within 3 seasons. Only NASCAR has watered down its base product as much and MLB probably will be as nationally irrelevant as NASCAR within a generation.
Soccer is just fine. If you don't like it, don't watch!
But the games have been good and our draw vs England was just as exciting to me as some of the multi goal games I've seen. It's about the interplay, not all about scoring. Ebbs and flows, drama, passion, aggression, strategy. The beautiful game.
The last time we played Iran in the world cup, I think we lost 0-2. Now we get to play "Death to America" again with all the marbles on the line. I hope, and think, this squad is better, but might need a bit more Aronson, Morris, or Ferraro to put the ball in the net. I'd also replace Zimmerman. Two games, two critical plays late, two mistakes. Send him to the glue factory and put in his replacement.
Secondary thought. Does the Iranian team try to defect after this game? Their very public actions during anthems are assuredly not well-received by the mullahs in Iran. I would not return there knowing many before have been executed for less. Wonder what the moments after the game bring with regards to this team seeking asylum.

The outcome that puts the regime in the most awkward position is probably their team beating us while protesting against the regime. Whatever happens I hope the players are safe. They are very brave.

I’m a short track fan. NASCAR is realizing it now with the success Dale Earnhardt Jr. with North Wilkesboro Speedway's revival and Tony Stewart with SRX racing. Dale Jr Downland is an awesome podcast for the casual fan.
