AAC in the Directors Cup 2022-23 Thread: Tulsa strikes first

Lets get this year’s thread going for the all-sports Directors Cup.
Cross Country conducted their championships last weekend, and Tulsa was in the thick of things gunning for a title.

Directors Cup is an all-sports competition that crowns a title (and tracks rankings) for Division I, II, III, and NAIA. Points are earned for winning a National title (100 points) and for making NCAA postseason appearances. (25 points minimum in most sports for just getting to the postseason).

The organizers post official updates at least three times during the season, and until the first update anything we post here is unofficial.

Tulsa came up ninth at men’s nationals. It was a disappointing result for a team ranked 5th with legitimate title hopes. But it puts them tops among current AAC members and ahead of all affiliates and incoming members.

For Cross Country, the top two teams in each of 16 regionals advance to Nationals. The 3rd place team at each regional also scores Directors Cup points as a “Top 48 team”.

No other AAC affiliated teams placed high enough in regionals to earn points. Tulsa won their regional. Three teams placed 5th at their regionals:
SMU women
WSU men
Tulane men

So considering the only sports whose championships are completed, your initial AAC Affiliated Directors Cup standings are:

1)Tulsa 69 points (9th M-CC)
T-2)Everybody Else 0 points

Well, SMU is #1 in nation in...Equestrian. Too bad it doesn't count in Director's Cup.

AAC in the Directors Cup 2022-23 Thread: Tulsa strikes first with 69
The Women’s Soccer College Cup wrapped up tonight with UCLA coming through in a comeback thriller for the title over those Tar Heels.

Here, we had 3 AAC affiliated teams make the bracket, led by current and future member Memphis advancing two rounds and reaching the Sweet 16.

Departing member UCF won a game before elimination, and incoming member UTSA lost their first round match.

After two sports (M-xc and W-soc) it’s:
Tulsa 69
Memphis 64
UCF 50
UTSA 25
others: 0

(but hang on - because seven more teams will be joining these rankings in the next two weeks as m-soc and vb wrap their championships)

AAC in the Directors Cup 2022-23 Thread: Tulsa Mem UCF (uTsa)
Mens soccer finished up last night… Syracuse won the title on PKs against Indiana.

AAC placed 5 teams in the tournament led by Tulsa and FIU who both made the final 16.

That’s good for 64 points each in the Cup standings.

SMU and USF scored 50 points for making the final 32.

Memphis, as well as football affiliate Navy earned 25 points each with a first round appearance. Navy qualified with the Patriot League auto bid.

After 3 fall sports (M-xc and W+M-soc) it’s:
Tulsa 133
Memphis 89
FIU 64
UCF 50
SMU 50
USF 50
UTSA 25
Navy 25
others: 0

(Next up — volleyball whose final is this coming weekend)

AAC in the Directors Cup 2022-23 Thread: 1.Tulsa 2.Memphis 3.¿FIU?
The Football postseason wrapped yesterday for two future AAC teams.

UAB snagged a cool fiddy for winning the Bahamas Bowl yesterday.

UTSA will probably have to settle for just the minimum 25 for playing in a bowl after the Cure Bowl that got away. If they somehow stay ranked top 25 at the end of the year, they would earn more points, but that seems unlikely.

We’ll wait until after this weekend to add these to the season tally table.

Wow, brutal day for the once and future AAC in football bowl games.

All four teams playing yesterday lost, the only bright spots were signs of life from all four. Plus Covid didn’t cancel any games, so a full 25 points for all four:
Cincinnati 25 * unless they are somehow ranked, which ain’t happening imo.
Rice 25
SMU 25
UNT 25
Four more bowl games still to go.
UCF needs a win to finish ranked.
Houston and ECU’s games may be more important to directors cup points as a 25 point swing (compared to Tulane which will finish ranked somewhere, win or lose)

AAC in the Directors Cup 2022-23 Thread: 1.Tuls 2. UCF 3. Memp
Lot of bowl games on yesterday, but the Volleyball Final was played last night, too. Texas won it all (a team that beat Houston 3-1 and swept Rice in a preseason scrimmage)

AAC placed 2 current teams (UH and UCF) in the tournament plus Rice advanced as the CUSA champs. All three were at-large worthy and all seeded on the 5-line, just shy of top fours who hosted the first round.

All three won their first round match, and UH won the Creighton regional after Auburn upset Creighton in the first round.

Volleyball points:
UH 64
UCF 50
Rice 50

After 4 fall sports (M-xc, W+M-soc, vb) it’s:
Tulsa 133
UCF 100
Memphis 89

UH 64
FIU 64 - A

SMU 50
USF 50
Rice 50 - I

UTSA 25 - I
Navy 25 - A
others: 0

Top three have points from multiple sports, the other seven above have scored in just one sport (pre-football).

10 teams have qualified for the football postseason, including 4 not yet listed in the standings for other sports.

We’ll let football season wrap before factoring in the football points.

I - incoming
A - affiliate

AAC in the Directors Cup 2022-23 Thread: 1.Tulsa 2. UCF 3. Memphis
Without updating the full tally, it is worth noting that MEMPHIS’ bowl win yesterday (unofficially) puts them in the LEAD by just a single point over Tulsa!

This could be short-lived, however, as UCF has a chance to leapfrog both of them into first if they can beat Duke this afternoon….

Duke has something to say about that and it looks like Memphis will hold the lead as we wrap the fall season.

Unless UCF gets enough sympathy votes to finish top 25 in the final football rankings.

Heck, they lost to Navy and stayed in the top 25. But at 1-3 in the last four games I think UCF’s ranked days are done.

Especially considering how poorly they played today.

The season is as young as a collegiate equestrian, Tanq, and I’m pacing myself.

Besides, I try to keep the Very Serious Director’s Cup discussion Very Serious and save the allusions and frivolity for threads like the Bottom Ten Recaps…
