RE: ***The Official Memphis vs Seton Hall Basketball Thread***
We have a low ceiling and we have players that aren't smart. The only way they beat us is because Lomax missed the easy shot to make it a 6 point game, which directly lead to Dandridge fouling out on one of about a half dozen bad calls against him and Williams. Coming on the heels of missing 3 out of our last 4 free throws, the play by Lawson at the end was mind boggling. It defies belief.
Very disappointing.

I used to live for these games. My schedule was built to accommodate them. I wouldn't have known we were playing yesterday had my g/f not mentioned it.
Apathy my friend…the quality of coaching in both of our major sports is not up to par. The effort is there from the players but the level of play and coaching in general stinks. College sports IMO are hard to watch especially when pro sport seasons are ongoing. What separates college is almost every city has a dedicated team to support but if quality suffers, fan support is bound to erode over time. I’ll still support the programs financially but like you, I don’t really care about setting aside time to watch them. I never thought this would happen with the Tigers.
Maybe it's just the 4th game of the season and the team is still coming together?
I agree, it’s November and the sky is not falling. I am amused reading the posts. The world is great when we win and we we lose- the blame game happens. All the couch coaches come out.
It's different groups. When we win, you get a mostly serious discussion of good and bad.
When we lose, all the same people come out with the same stuff. They mostly dominate the discussion in those losses, and it is certainly not balanced.

I think that most fans are not thinking the sky is falling it's that we can all see that the team isn't very good, except KD. We are kind of slow, not a good shooting team, we struggle to score. Fans can see that we probably will be a bubble team again. This is what makes fans so unhappy.
Last night's version was definitely not good.
I'm not ready to say the team is not good though.
Last night we got zero quality minutes from our second best player.
And until Damaria gets cleared, there's a big dropoff from out top 2 guys to the rest.
Malcolm had a good game, and Keonte is showing what he could be.
Lomax has regressed.
If we get Damaria, we still have an opportunity.

Y’all should know by now the NCAA will do Memphis & Penny no favors regarding a waiver transfer. They will drag this nonsense out when it should have been an open & shut case. Same as DW deal 2 years ago. And that was before the IARP let us off the hook. Not gonna hold my breath waiting on the a-holes to let the kid play.

Maybe our guys simply aren't appropriately skilled at those basic functions of playing the game. Maybe they practice well but don't follow through in the games. Maybe it's coaching.
If Malcolm could jump a little more he would be a beast. If Alo had just a little bit of the Elliott Perry / CDR / whoever shot-making ability, he would be so much more effective.

Doesn’t every team have the same issue every year ? Especially now with the transfer portal? Or is that just only common with us ?

No one else can score and very few can even catch a pass without fumbling it or turning it over. Don’t know if it is coaching or lack of skill. Probably a combination. Penny has these guys running an offense that’s predicated on beating your man one on one. Most of the guys aren’t capable of this. And I have never seen a college player get worse from one year to the next like Alo. After 5 years one would think he would improve in one area. Gonna be a long year. Like every year.
I wouldnt go so far as to say he gets worse each year. I would definitely say he hasnt improved one iota since he came here and that makes it seem like he gets worse. It is bad enough to see a 5th year senior make the plays he makes, but to know he is a 5th year senior who has been given an incredible amount of playing time and he is a PG makes it almost unbelievable.
It really concerns me that the two players who Penny has coached the longest (ALo and Dandridge) haven't seemed to learn one damned thing in their years under Penny. That makes me believe they are playing exactly how Penny tells them to play and that is crazy if that is the case.
Yeah I'm sure Penny tells them to turn it over and miss free throws. LOL
Is he not getting paid to ensure that they don't

Seton Hall had 4 transfers starting. We had one Davis. As the old timers used to say that dog won’t hunt

I more have apathy for college sports in general at this point. Nobody cares about the name on the front of the jersey anymore.

Much better for the board psychos to make posts about how much they don't care.

Roster turnover has been extreme for awhile. Paster was starting over almost every season after his 3rd. It used to be build a roster of 3 & 4 year players and fill in around the edges with a JUCO or two. Now, it is very unusual if even 1/2 the roster is the same two years in a row.
There is no building a program over 2-3 years it is - rebuild your team every year. See what happens that year and then start over again the next year.
It's pretty jarring but that is today's college bb game.
I don't much care for it.
