AAC WBB 22-23: The first two weeks
/ UCF&USF 9-0 combined

Time to get the Womens Basketball Thread rolling for the 2022-23 season!!!

UCF and USF both won last night to stay unbeaten. Those two are also in the top 50 of the early computer rankings.

https://theamerican.org/news/2022/11/22/...hoops.aspx

Coaches didn’t give the defending champs much credit, picking them 9th… but so far the Knights are proving them wrong…

Preseason Coaches Poll:
Quote:South Florida has been tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the 2022-23 American Athletic Conference women’s basketball title in voting done by the league’s head coaches, the conference announced Wednesday, Oct. 12.

The Bulls were selected as the conference favorite for a third consecutive season, earning nine first-place votes and 99 total points. Houston earned the other two first-place votes and 89 total points to be picked second. SMU is third with 73 total points, followed by Tulsa (66) in fourth. Tulane and Memphis round out the top five, tying for fifth with 56 points.

Temple was seventh with 43 points, followed by defending American Athletic Conference Champions UCF (38), Cincinnati (34), Wichita State (32) and East Carolina (19).

Current OOC standings:
(Also apparently not including last night’s UCF win)

And an 8-0 start for 2 future members Rice (5-0) and UAB (3-0), AAC WBB future looks bright.

UCF is rebuilding after Coach Abe left for Georgia and took players with her.

New coach is a solid hire and we should have a nice season but wont be making any noise. Obviously, we will be in a good situation going forward but this year will belong to the bulls.

That makes sense and I had forgotten UCF lost their coach. Rice was in the same spot this time last year and also made a solid hire. Last year was an unexpected rebuilding year but this year we look to be right back on track to being a solid contender again.

=Rice&UCF stay unbeaten, Char d. Cin

Rice gets its first “name” win of the season at Texas A&M 66-58
First 6-0 start in program history.
Warren Nolan has them ranked #17

UCF takes the UCF classic with wins over Samford and SE Missouri. Knights now 5-0

USF beat GaTech 63-50 at the Gulf Coast Showcase. But then drops their first two games of the season, to #22 Michigan 63-58, and to #23 Villanova 72-50. USF falls to a still solid 7-2.

Houston lost in OT to Florida 77-73.

ECU(5-2) beats Liberty but falls to Virginia

Oh and talk about burying the lead…

(4-2) Charlotte 59, (4-3) Cincinnati 58! Niners led by double digits early and held on to seal the W.

Wichita State is 5-1
UAB and FAU are both 4-1
SMU, Tulane, Tulsa are all 4-2

AAC WBB 22-23: Rice&UCF stay unbeaten, Char d. Cin
= USF d. Tex, Rice is 7-0, UM hangs w/#1

Friday night USF(8-2) beat #22 Texas in Austin! (Great bounce back after losing last 2, also to top 25 teams)

Rice stays unbeaten moving to 7-0 with another B12 win, beating TCU at home.

Memphis (4-4) battled #1 South Carolina last night. The 25-point margin of loss is more respectable than it may sound. Only two teams have played unbeaten SC closer than that: #2 Stanford(OT) and #15 UCLA (who lost by 19). #17 Maryland also lost by 25 to the Gamecocks. Keep an eye on Memphis, who also hung around against Indiana early.

17 teams in the country remain unbeaten.

UT-Arlington beat both UNT and @Houston(1-6) this week to (again) win their OOC against AAC affiliated teams. Cincinnati(5-3) had beaten UTA earlier on a neutral court.

FAU(5-1) UAB(5-1) both looking pretty good coming in. Lone losses by 30+ to Miami and LSU, respectively.

Char(4-2) also has big losses to #10 NC State and Illinois, but also has a VCU win plus their aforementioned win against Cincy. 49ers were off this week but play Clemson Thursday and Wake Forest Saturday.

Notable games this afternoon:
ECU(5-3) hosts VCU(3-5). Houston, Cincy, and SMU(6-2) all play one-loss teams (KSU, UIC, Cal). Tonight Tulane(5-2) hosts LSU(8-0).

Massey top 180 (top half of D1):
38. USF
50. Rice
65. UCF (6-1)
83. Tulane
91. SMU
100. Charlotte
101. Wichita State (7-1)
105. Memphis
112. Tulsa (5-2)
126. Cincinnati
134. Temple (3-5)
145. UAB
152. ECU
165. Houston

SoFlo definitely looks like the one to beat.

Will anyone else step up to challenge them in a solid league where all 11 members are ranked in the top half of D1?

At the half Houston 39 Rice 29.
Owls are playing some awful ball but “should” be able to mount a comeback if they can figure something out at halftime. Sounds like UH is also playing sloppy but their shots are definitely falling.

Rice took back 8 of that 10 point lead until Coogs hit a 3 at the 3Q buzzer.
53-48 now and the UH upset bid continues.

UH with a chance to win it at the end of first OT… the layup rolls around, then out.

Going to second overtime tied at 78.

This is the first WBB game between Rice/UH since 2015, for some reason.

Heck of a game…

RICE survives in double OT to move to 8-0

91-88

UH looked pretty good and will probably be closer to the middle of the pack in conference play than their dead-last in Massey/NET might imply.

Elsewhere, Memphis was easily handled by Rice’s current conference foe Middle Tennessee 69-53.

Cincy lost at Xavier yesterday 48-35.
Wichita State won at SLU Thursday
And—In other Texas crosstown action:

SMU 64, UNT 46 (Wednesday)

And one more 2OT final for you, also from Wednesday—
Tulane on the road at Troy gives up triple digits but still wins it
103-100.

AAC WBB 22-23 = Rice in 2OT over Coogs, USF @#8 NCSt
(12-10-2022 06:02 PM)Cubanbull1 Wrote:  USF will be at #8 NCState tomorrow. Another tough outing after beating Texas

USF led early 17-11 and 17-13 at the 1Q break. A 16-1 run for NCSt put the Wolfpack in the lead for good. But they never pulled away and the Bulls played them even the rest of the way. 65-57 loss but another respectable showing against a ranked opponent.

USF deserve to be ranked but I don’t expect them to be this month. Love the OOC schedule.

Tulane beat Southern by 15. Tulsa smashed Central Arkansas by oodles.

Temple couldn’t hold a late lead at Penn going 2/8 on FTs down the stretch.

UCF lost to Seaton Hall and Wichita fell to Kansas.

USF right now is hampered by some injuries that have kept the bench from contributing. Maria Alvarez another three point specialist hasn’t played yet. She would give the team depth once she returns.
