NIU MBB vs LIU in 3rd place game
10am tipoff and streamed. Go to mbb schedule on niu website. Probably will again not have announcers so you can hear children playing in the sparsely filled gym.

KenPom NIU 312 LIU 345.
NIU is 3.5 favorite (thanks McG in another thread).

LIU (I think they are the sharks) is 1-3 with losses to Utah 48-89, Marquette 58-95 and S Dakota 58-68. Their lone win is over Mount Saint Vincent 111-50. Their leading scorer is Marko Macetic at 16.8 pts per game and 15-38 from the 3pt line.

Huskies need this one and two of the next three games (all on the road) to gain some respect from some on this board.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best the defense has looked, causing all sorts of issues for LIU. 20-8 Huskies with 10 to play in the first.

50-27 NIU at half. Shooting 58% to LIU's 33%. Hit 8 three's at close to 60% clip to LIU's 1 (14%). 4 of them by Coit, not sure why LIU is giving him space. Winning the rebound and turnover battles.

I wasn't able to tune in today. Holiday travel plans and entertaining family and whatnot.

But, I'll go right on ahead and scout the box score.

First and foremost, I think this game gives us a lot to chew on regarding our beloved Huskies. Obviously LIU is worse than us. I think most of us figured they were worse, but not by much and NIU kind of beat their azzes today. So, that's a good. I'm trying not to celebrate not being the worst, but at least this game gave us some clearer division line to see. It is much worse and LIU isn't the only program who we'd kick the crap out of like this.

Anyway, I'm happy to see Williams have a big day. That was important for him. And our 3 primary scorers all had good days together. I know who Crump is but 2 points in 17 minutes of play is low on both of those numbers for me. Considering he and Amos are pretty close in style and Amos bested him in both minutes and points is something. Granted, maybe this was a game to get Amos more minutes. I'd sure like to see more than 5 points out of him though.

The rest of the bench is uninspiring though. Thornton led the way from the bench with 7 points and 23 minutes. Clearly having athletic guards is important to Burno and Thornton fits that descriptor. And...I think none of us have ever felt comfortable with Thornton being a scoring threat. He's best when he's creating plays for others and 11 assists tells me that is exactly what he was doing.

I'm kind of curios what is up with Hunter though. He is simply not playing after being a starter for about half the year (out of necessity) and in the season opener this year. Since that game, he's barely played. Could be injury related or maybe not. He's clearly not great but he's steady and plays decent defense. Just surprised to see him only play 4 minutes today.

I would have liked to see the 9 minutes Youngblood logged against a team like LIU. He looked overwhelmed against GT but a team like LIU should have been a good experience for him. Same with Plintauskas but he also only played 4 minutes.

Granted, there's only 360 minutes to fill and everyone can't play 15 minutes.

Think Nutter was getting a little bit of a break today? Only played 16 minutes while both Coit and Williams were well over 30.

Oh well...Great win and confidence booster for the fellas. We'll have our hands full at UNI after the Holiday but I'll be interested to see how things are coming along.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UNI so far is a shell of what they have been is the past.
One of their best players from last year, Noah Carter, transferred to Mizzou and has started every game.
One of their better players this year
is hurt and will be out for awhile.
https://www.radioiowa.com/2022/11/21/nor...th-injury/
Another one of their former starters, Austin Phyfe, is suffering from long term Covid effects and may never play again. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/...569670007/

RE: NIU MBB vs LIU in 3rd place game
Sam Houston State blew the doors off South Dakota in the final, Vegas doesn't have them figured out, spread was at -5.5 and won by 30 again. Should be a fun team to follow this year as they seem tournament bound.

7 non-conference games left on the schedule. If you can pick up 3 wins here I think that does a lot for the team's confidence heading into MAC play. They'll kick themselves all year for the IL Springfield loss as the record wouldn't look as bad.

Got to beat Albany at home, find a way to win on road against Eastern, and surprise either Northern Iowa or Idaho (tight turnaround from Eastern game).

I'm not sure what is up with Hunter either, he's not great but shocked he's not in the rotation as he can rebound and gives you decent defense. Seems in the doghouse as opposed to injury related.

Rotation seemed to be trying to have guys fresh for Saturday (Nutter, Amos, Crump, Russell) didn't play much 2nd half.

Obviously this was the best Thornton looked this year, I thought Russell was one of the few that had some moments against Sam Houston so was surprised it was Thornton who really ran the second unit and set some guys up for easy buckets at the rim with some nice passing.

I would’ve liked to seen Coit and Williams taken out much earlier. I remember Dontel Highsmith blowing out his knee in the last minute at Iowa State after scoring 19pts. had no business still being in. Great game today for team and coach

Olawalabingbang with 11 rebounds and 7 points. Nice improvement over Adong.

The post players Monty brought in his last year were garbage. Although, interestingly....he's (Makuoi) averaging 8 ppg for Tennessee State this year (5 games).

But I still like Durosinmi better.

First, his two points were an IMPRESSIVE dunk under the basket in traffic. He fouled out because he is playing inside a lot and the refs were calling a lot of petty stuff. Anthony handles the ball alot so the stats don't always show his value.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
