Great game, I'll be pulling for y'all against Houston.

Several questions , Charleston fan:

1/. You had access to contract ???

2/ Several years ago I was told by our AD that
officials are assigned by a regional collective
not by conference. This was case years ago but
no longer. For example , MAC, Horizon, and Big 10 share
officials and are assigned by this group. I have often seen
same officials do a MAC game one day and Big Ten the next day.

3/. I seriously doubt MAC is going to expense of sending
3 officials to SC the night before Thanksgiving for a non-conf game .

Glad to admit I am wrong after you substantiate your claim

I don't have access to the contract, our AD tweeted out that statement after there was so much chatter about the officiating. I imagine the refs, or someone involved with y'all or the MAC would have been happy to correct him if that was untrue. You could look up the crew and see what games they normally officiate, maybe it was a crew that usually works the big south or the southern conference.

I know we get ted valentine for a lot of games because he lives in Charleston, usually when the ACC doesn't have something for him.

Either way, no matter who the officials were or what conference they usually work in, it was a poor effort on their part. A discrepancy that large is uncommon.

I do agree that the foul disparity was larger than you normally see, 11 to 6 in both halves. I looked at the box score and 11 of the 22 fouls called on y'all were called right after a rebound or steal by the cougars. Another issue is that the refs were averaging a foul a minute for the whole game and then didn't call any in the last 6 minutes of the game. It went from very tight to let them play.

I looked the refs up on KenPom and here's what I found:

Brian McNutt started in 2016 working primarily Southland games. By 2018, he was working Horizon, Summit, and Southland games. He started working a number of MAC games as well in 2020. the last few seasons KenPom has ranked him between 100-150 out of the top 200 refs.

Michael Kitts Jr. started in 2022 working Horizon, Ivy, and MAC games, he did not rank in the top 200 refs.

Tim Stewart has been working since before 2014. He works primarily Summit, Horizon, and MAC games including the MAC conference tournament (usually try to get the best refs for the tournaments). In an analysis that KenPom ran in 2014 Tim Stewart called 0.09 fouls per game more than the average. The results ranged from -3.6 to +3.3.

Tim Stewart. LOL. Only the most ardent fan would know. Tim was a GA on staff at Kent State in 1991.

Your AD feeling the need to respond to online chatter screams social media addict. I hear ours has that problem too so I won't judge. Anyways, defending it by saying 'we didn't pick 'em' kinda sounds like he's acknowledging we got a bit of a raw deal.

Just looked up personal fouls per team this year. Kent St. is in a four way tie for 344th averaging 21.3 fouls per game. We average 21.7 at home and 21.0 away. I think this team is just going to foul a lot no matter who the refs.

When a team plays defense the way the Flashes do there is going to be a lot of fouls. That goes with the territory. As long as they cut out stupid fouls and just get good, aggressive hustle fouls they will be fine.

For those that haven't seen the most recent poll, now all three of our losses are to top 25 teams.

Thanks, anti-zip. I hadn't noticed that. Interestingly, Charleston is 19 places behind Kent State in the NCAA NET rankings. Forget about not pulling out the games at Houston and Gonzaga, if they had just hung on against Charleston, Kent State would be ranked around 25th, or at least in "others receiving votes". Oh well, all that is interesting to talk about, but we all know that the games that matter the most start tonight.
