Right now, there is no way to put an end to it since the players can transfer at will. I agree with another poster who estimated that we might lose half the team or so in the transfer portal after this season.

We can't fire Quarles and pay him nearly $1 million for the rest of his contract. Maybe after a couple more seasons we will be able to fire him and get things turned around.

I agree- as a fan it is obviously frustrating to watch these things happen without there being any type of solution available. It really speaks to the importance of making quality hires and having a good athletic director.

Sound crazy — why not? The Transfer Portal will have to be part of all future coaches’ contracts. Once a certain number of transfers is reached in a given sport under that coach — his/her contract becomes null and void and he goes also at the discretion of the school with NO BUYOUT obligations. As for this situation — can a high school-college assistant coach have sufficient clout and connections to work the portal and replenish the roster that he is responsible for depleting in the first place?

Maybe Quarles can bring in some DIII players, give them scholarships, and perhaps they won’t transfer.

Perhaps these players just want to move up to a higher level but I think many may just be getting away from Quarles. His job now is to exploit the portal to our advantage, getting group of five and power five transfers that want to start or transfers from other fcs or D2 teams. That is the way to be competitive in this era and we shall see how Coach handles it. I am not getting my hopes up though.

He’s stocking groceries at Kroger fwiw. Not surprising he’s out of town. I’m very concerned that Scott Carter and Quarles have destroyed this program beyond fixing. We proved a lot of naysayers wrong by having success on the field and with the fan/community support after bringing it back but we are trending towards a path of program destruction. I’m happy we all got to experience 2021 because I fully expect it may prove to be the high water mark for ETSU football.
