That would be an interesting change of events if he's no longer on the roster considering he was just taking pictures with a 2024 recruit who visited a week ago.

Blakemore? wonder what that is about. Transfer?

White can’t run. He would be exposed vs way more speed.

Ester is meh. Literally every player is meh. No one is worth taking, I don’t mean that in any other way than it is what it is.

I think you're really sleeping on Omalley. Check his stats vs what we consider the best DT's NIU has produced in recent memory - Heflin & Kramer

Omalley - 23 games, 30 solo, 55 total, 13.5 TFL, 11.5 sacks
Kramer - 48 games, 55 solo, 130 tot., 17.0 TFL, 05.5 sacks
Ja.Heflin - 38 games, 51 solo, 91 total, 21.0 TFL, 10.0 sacks

Projecting Omalley out to 38 and 48 games:
Omalley - 38 games, 50 solo, 90 total, 21 TFL, 19.0 sacks
Omalley - 48 games, 62 solo, 114 tot., 28 TFL, 24.0 sacks

At 38 games his production is almost identical to Heflin's except for doubling his sack total. At 48 games his production is significantly better than Kramers except in total tackles.

I understand there's more to playing DT than stats. Forcing plays a certain direction. Occupying double teams. Clogging the middle. ETC. But regardless of those nuances I'm keeping this dude on the field no matter who transfers here.

Best of luck to these guys. With redshirts and the COVID year, they probably are all well past graduation.

We also don't know the status of Cox's injury. He's been out all year and it's quite possible he is weighing the risks vs rewards of coming back and the risk may outweigh the reward.

YES - without question, don't know how I did that. He maybe our best Dline right now. I like our Dline. We have some depth, best part of the D.

I did not fully realize it until this thread but man the roster looks really bad heading into next season. Outside of RB I am not sure how you can feel good about any other position. Even at QB and WR you are banking on guys coming back from injury with little behind them.

I saw recently that a quarter of the scholarship players on the roster were walk-ons. It is a nice story but the wins just have not been there with that roster construct. The recruiting thread suggests we are continuing to load up on guys no one else is looking at. At some point you have to question the strategy if we do not start winning.

Agreed, there seems to be some concensus because we get Rudolph and Lombardi back from injury that we will win games again. Even with Lombardi we almost lost to EIU and did lose to a bad Tulsa team. We lose Tucker and Thorton at WR. So all we have at WR is Rudolph and Rutkeiwicz. What happens if one if them gets injured? What happens if Rudolph isn't the same player post-injury?

We also lose Soraghan at TE and Miles Joiner can't be relied on as he has been injured early in back-to-back seasons now.

Our defense is still the 2nd worst defense in points given up in the MAC. We can't seem to win games with this defense unless our offense plays great, converts 3rd & 4th downs at a high rate, and stays healthy.

This team has major problems and none of them will get fixed with 2023 high school recruits. We need transfers to fill weaknesses at backup QB, WR, LB, and secondary.

I’m glad you brought this up. The staff celebrating the fact that so many walkons are starting and/or on the roster is not a selling point. It’s a major red flag that you aren’t recruiting very well, in my opinion.

Our strenghth will be a healthy Lombardi and Rudolph. Who at this level feels good about their roster unless you have a stud Qb. Not many. After those two, we do have STRONG lines, but need to get better. Would hope one of youger guys could beat out a returning starter, that's a sign of strength. 2023 will be much better and will not be a year of doom and gloom.

It’s a selling point for walk-on’s which is the entire reason they do it

Well, frankly, I would prefer scholarship recruited players.

RE: Guys hanging it up per Akron game notes
But you don't know what STF's latest budget adjustments are ... scholarships, recruiting, etc. How was it Hammock still had a few scholarships in the time since last spring?

Remember NIU now has a required full-time DEI staffer. Athletics reduced the staff of Recreation from 10 to 7 after STF took over (and one of the 7 is actually a department-wide person). Not commenting for or against DEI (I support the Golden Rule), but the money came from?

Also, about that $1,053,320 raised for the programs and projects selected in Huskies Invest ... was actually $947,988 because 10% -- $105,332 -- was scooped off the top. As each of 31 items noted, "Up to 10% of your gift(s) will be allocated for operational needs of the Athletics Department and University."

Then there's the unknown pay of the next volleyball coach. Now-departed Ray Gooden got $112,500 ... after 21 years. Was more than all other HCs except football, mbb and wbb, so figure the next one will be less.

Tricky to figure out with just bits and pieces, but college sports is part (and a big part) about money. Especially in a duct tape/bailing wire operation like NIU.

As to high school recruiting, I would think that's more costly than going to the portal. But maybe not. I wonder what walk-ons get.

I'm in that camp. And not because those two make the entire team great, but because those two can elevate the offense to tops in the west. And that's all it takes. NIU scored the second most points in the west with that joke of a QB system and no deep threat at WR. Rockys not gonna throw 40 TDS, but if he is 100% healthy I like him better than any other West QB. The defense isn't gonna be good. But its the MAC. Toledo is going to the MACC. Their D has given up 201 points in conference play. NIU's 215. You can even put that 14 point difference on Hamptons 2 pick 6's. Even if you don't it just shows you defense doesn't win without a good QB. CMU and WMU have much better defenses. 171 & 165 pts against respectively. But they have no QB.

I agree the struggle vs EIU is troubling. But IMO this team never had its head on straight and came into this season over confident. Also, Lombardi came into the season wearing a knee brace. My guess is he wasn't 100% when the season started.

Hammock has a lot of learning to still do. I'm hoping 2022 was a big lesson for him.

I think this whole thing is more on the coaches. The kids have won before, we can’t deny it. It’s the idiots in charge, and I mean all of them.

I think the play calling was a joke, it morphed in to a mess but I can’t really fault the coaches for that, we didn’t have a qb for most of the season. Then again, I can fault the coaches they brought in these qbs.

The defense is a **** show. The kids clearly couldnt grasp what the coaches wanted, the coaches couldn’t coach what they wanted, or the scheme was idiotic and it’s running as they wanted…

So yeah, I blame the coaches.

Off topic but Ohio vs Toledo for MACC. Letting that sink in and I miss the Marcus Childers days. Hard to keep hope moving forward

The walk on thing is nice but those players should not be the top players on your team. If they are you are recruiting well with the initial scholarships handed out.

The other thing that bothers me is TH is always talking about academics with recruiting, let’s focus on football. That’s what he was hired to do. He needs to take some risks on players IMO.

Didn't want to make a thread for this on our board but thought it was worth sharing. Miami QB announced he is transferring today.

Isn't the roster a depth chart for the game?

If it is, they typically don't list players who are hurt and ruled out of the game, right?

81's point is not the depth chart, but the ROSTER. All players in the program are listed on the roster even if injured. Rudolph has been listed all year and still is listed. Blakemore appears to no longer be part of the program.

Blakemore being gone is a huge surprise. Hammock told me in August o expect a big year from him. I recall he got injured when the other 2 starters did too.
