I know that most of the transfers that Southern Miss has gotten are young men that played high school ball in MS or in our normal recruiting footprint. Most of them are players that our staff had a previous relationship with. There are a lot of players that seem to want to move back home or closer to home at times.

I read a story a while back, Huff said the Herd won't get a transfer just to get a transfer...they'll only go after a kid they have some connection with. Whether one of the coaches recruited him in HS or if he played for one of the other coaches..

that's why I really like our current coach ... his ties in the 'sip run deep!

RE: The Transfer Portal Is Revving Its Engine...
Summarize your transfer portal haul. I'm always looking out for FCS standouts, G5 starters, and P5s that are two-deep guys and play in most games and not just on special teams. I think we did pretty solid.

1. Starting QBs from Tulsa and Tarleton (used to play for Kentucky) as well as a Memphis RS freshman.
2. An all-MAC DB that has been on some all-America honorable mention lists, Georgia State starter at OL, and an ECU DB that was on their two-deep.
3. Seven P5 players that all had significant PT and a couple were starters that just moved down the depth chart.

Non-FBS
LB Davon Gilmore, Wingate
LS Collin Springer, Wofford
QB Beau Allen, Tarleton

G5
QB Davis Brin, Tulsa (starting QB at Tulsa)
QB JC French (Memphis RS Freshman)
CB Davon Ferguson Bowling Green (all-conference honors in MAC)
CB Damel Hickman
OL Bryson Broadway, Georgia State (started for Georgia State and EIU)

P5
WR Jaylon Barden, Pitts
WR Anthony Queeley, Syracuse
LB Tarian Lee Jr, Texas A&M
LB TJ Smith, Kansas State
TE Keaton Upshaw, Kentucky
S Cameron Williams, Washington
K Brendan Franke, Nebraska

RE: The Transfer Portal Is Revving Its Engine...
Wish I had more time to do research and make a nice list like EEs. Maybe I will later, but all I know right now is all of the FCS transfers we signed were guys that Kinne coached at UIW or coached against. So that tells me he's very confident in them. I wanna say they were mostly if not all all conference selections. Maybe some even All Americans

9- FCS guys (7 from UIW, 1 from HCU, 1 from SELA

G5 transfers:
WR Shadeed Ahmed, Marshall Not much production here in his only year. Like 150 yards and 1 TD. Did most of his limited damage against Georgia Southern so thats cool.
LB Dan Foster, Marshall Dont see any stats.
DL Tavian Coleman, UT State 26 Tackles, 1 sack, 4.5 TFL, 1 BK
WR Drew Donley, Cincinnati KR/PR stats at Cincy only. Apparently he runs a 10.6 100m
EDGE Deven Wright, Boise St 5 Tackles, 1 sack. Yikes

P5:
CB Kaleb Ford-Dement, WSU 10 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 PBU at WSU, 13 PBU, 26 tackles, 2 ints at ODU
QB Malik Hornsby, Arkansas, 46 yds passing, 1 rush td, 135 yds rushing
CB Josh Eaton, OU 7 tackles
CB Darius Jackson Mizzou 15 tackles, 1 tlf, 7 pbu
TE Konner Fox, Kansas State Apparently he made lots of blocks.

Marshall Portal Transfers:

Kesean Brown, LB, 6-2, 230, Columbia, S.C., Appalachian State
J.J. Roberts, DB, 6-0, 190, Hurricane, W.Va., Wake Forest
Josh Moten, DB, 6-0, 175, Waldorf, Md., Texas A&M
Chris Thomas, DL, 6-5, 315, Tallahassee, Fla., Univ. of Florida
Kylen McCracken, DL, 6-3, 305, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Ohio University
Michael Green, DL, 6-4, 250, Williamsburg, Va., Univ. of Virginia
Marc Viechec, LB, 6-0, 225, Naples, Fla., Southeastern Univ.
Tah Mac Bright, DB, 6-2, 180, Houston, Texas, Incarnate Word
Chinazo "C.K." Obobi, OL, 6-5, 310, London, England, UK, Laney College
Lloyd Willis, OL, 6-7, 315, Miami, Fla., Florida State
Luke Soto, TE, 6-4, 260, Tehachapi, Calif., UTEP
DeMarcus Harris, WR, 6-1, 190, Vero Beach, Fla., Kentucky
Mason Pierce, WR, 5-7, 165, Pearland, Texas, McNeese State

In addition we were able to fend off P5's to keep Eli Neal, Owen Porter, Micha Abraham, and Rasheen Ali. Also, rumor running around that Cory Gammage is back at Marshall, after a very short stint at Memphis.

Ahmed is more of a possession receiver and runs decent routes, will have an occasional drop. Foster was a back up, but this kid has the potential to be a stud. Great size and speed.

RE: The Transfer Portal Is Revving Its Engine...
All of the transfers to Southern Miss are originally from the normal recruiting footprint for the Golden Eagles, with the exception of QB Billy Wiles, who Will Hall had a relationship with from recruiting him while he was at Tulane. A number of these guys were backups at SEC or other Money5 teams. USM has had really good luck with this type of player over the past 2 seasons with approximately 10 of this type player on the 2 deep last season.

QB, Holman Edwards, 6'3 220, Houston, French Camp, MS (was a backup at Houston after playing at a MS juco; 2 yrs to play)

QB, Billy Wiles, 6'4 220, Clemson, Ashburn, VA (backup at Clemson that was once committed to Will Hall when he was at Tulane; 3 years to play)

DE, Eric Thomas, 6'3 255, Arkansas, Pensacola, FL (played little at ARK; 2 yrs to play)

S, MJ Daniels, 6'1 200, Ole Miss, Lucedale, MS (played mostly on special teams; 2 yrs to play)

OL, Gabe Cavazos, 6'5 292, MS State, Lake Cormarant, MS (backup OL at MSU; 3 yrs to play)

LB, Kolbe Cage, 6'1 215, Arizona, New Orleans, LA (played in 8 games and started 6 in 2022 as a freshman at Arizona; 3 yrs to play)

S, Dylan Lawrence, 6'4 205, Miss St, Lucedale, MS (played mostly on special teams; 2 yrs to play)

RB, Rodrigues Clark, 6'0 208, Memphis, Starkville, MS (27 games, 241 rushes for 1,033 yds and 7 TD at Memphis; 2 yrs to play)

LS, Brennen Milliron, 5'8 210, Troy, Hoover, AL

It's been a particularly brutal portal season for us. Lost our best WR Corey Gammage.

FYI: Corey Gammage didn't make the UCF 2-Deep

It's odd tho, because he was nominated for Biletnikoff Award. I assume coaches send in names to the award watch lists.

So maybe Gammage has an minor injury that the coaches are keeping it hidden. Saving him for @Boise State

It was a super competitive position battle.

Kid has the tools but he was known to take plays off. Wish he would have stayed and matured more but I can't say him staying would have made a big difference for us. Hoping the UK transfer more than takes his place.
