RE: Joseph Goodman: Will UAB ever be a basketball school again?
I'm not saying this to talk trash about AK, who I think is a very good coach, but has he done much to drum up student support and get people to the games? - like Pearl has - as everyone likes to mention on here...

I would be frustrated about the attendance too, but there's multiple issues going on - as everyone has outlined in detail. Quick things to be done that could help are direct, Coach and player involvement with the students to get them excited and at the games. UAB has to pick up the ball on advertising and marketing - that is almost nonexistent. How do we have such amazing hype videos and social media videos, but near zero actual marketing and campaigns to try and boost attendance?

I agree the absolute biggest thing, far and away, is to win, win consistently, win conference titles, get to the big dance, get ranked, and win games in March. Without that, our attendance overall, and the fanbase, will not get a whole lot better. UAB is great at crapping the bed anytime we have momentum or positive light - in both basketball and football. If AK is frustrated by the attendance, which is a fair gripe, he needs to look in the mirror a bit, examine our home schedule, and look at the fact that we crapped the bed in a televised, hyped up, game against a team that no one knows (but that is admittedly VERY good) - in a season where we are supposedly transcendently "talented" and supposed to do huge things.. If we keep losing games like that where we get some momentum, some national shine, and some positive press, no one will show up to watch us play Presbyterian, or FAU, or UNT, or anyone really..

Why was there not another hype video dropped for this season? Last season's video was great - didn't it even win a Southeast Emmy?

Did it work?

A better tactic would have been to ask questions instead of being a prick. Do a story on declining basketball attendance across the country. Then interview the AD, AK, marketing, discuss scheduling and what is being done, what can be done. Marketing. How the move to the AAC will change marketing and scheduling philosophies along with overall budget. Maybe Irvine can do one and show the bama fanboy writer wannabe how it's done?

What could have been a positive thing is an epic fail.

I have him blocked on social media because of his shenanigans and rarely read his articles. His attack on the Blazer band on Twitter shows how much of an idiot he is. Has he ever put out a UAB article without mentioning UAT? The way he went about mentioning UAT this time was really bizarre. Hadn’t heard of Eric Gaines??? I took an Uber in Philly last week and my Uber driver wasn’t familiar with Jelly Walker, but he was familiar with Eric Gaines. Do better, Joke Goodman.

Watching Joe double and triple down on his dipstickery when presented with the facts that UAB attendance is off to its best start since 2012 is hilarious.

I went back and looked at one of the online media yearbooks at attendance during November/December for UAB basketball. Even during the peak Bartow years, there were plenty of crowds of 2500-4000 for those games. So where did the extra 1500 go?

Answer: they are dead, Joe. or retired to Sarasota. They were never replaced because UAB basketball got stuck in one-bid purgatory and left behind in part because of some shady political dealings that you are fully aware of. That doesn’t get fixed overnight and will never get fixed against Presbyterian or Rhodes on a weeknight in November.

Just ridiculous.

If you want to hype the team, just hype the team. It is being a royal PBJ with ears to point the finger at the “UAB fans” who are doing all they can to support.

Goodman is doing exactly what he should. Publish negative articles to drive up clicks. Then, when he’s collected enough, write a positive article and everyone will click on that and/or give him their “‘atta boys”

Of course, that is the recipe to be an “influencer” and not a journalist, but I have a suspicion that his bosses don’t care what he decides to be.

I see it that way also.

Now that we've trashed the writer, can we address his question? Will we ever be consistently good (top 40) again. Kennedy might be our last hope.

His question and tying it to the attendance of a game in November against Presbyterian or any other team is beyond idiotic.

Can UAB be a consistent top 40? Hell yes.

Go raise about $5 million for NIL and you can be in the final four next year.

If anybody follows the big Instagram accounts, you saw empty ass stadiums all over the SEC today. Texas A&M announced 93,000 and if I’m using that same math I’m basically a billionaire. I expect to see an uptick in conference play. Hopefully the team keeps winning.

I wouldn't pick up my dog's **** with a Joseph Goodman article, even if it were printed on Charmin Ultra Soft.

The real question he should be considering...Will AL.com ever be a legitimate news organization again?
