RE: WBB vs Duke Game Thread
Remember when we landed King and Brewer, and Cullop said that our starters wouldn't have to pace themselves any more? So much for that. Wiard was exhausted from handling the ball without a break against Duke's defense, and Mickonowicz also has no one to back her up.

I expected Duke to be a better team. I can't understand how they could only win by only 17 against a team which looked as bad as the rockets did offensively. For one thing their full court press was not a factor. Rockets handled it easily. Secondly, Duke is a very poor 3 point shooting team. They now have 14 3 pointers in 5 games, less than 3/game. And their shooting 3 pointers at 21%. And today against Toledo's defense they had 19 turnovers. And a real strange stat for me is that while Duke dominated on the boards 41 to 21 the rockets had more shots (50 to 49). They play Connecticut on Friday so I guess that will be a good test of their capabilities.

Duke's coach is trying to build a defensive juggernaut. They gave up 57 points in their 1st game and the coach said they didn't play good defense at all that game. That's the most they have given up so far. They held a decent Davidson to 37 on the road, and Davidson went to #19 Maryland and played them fairly tough the next game. I didn't expect UT would score a lot, but 41 was not good. Lots of open threes that were missed, and some mistimed turnovers. Mid-50s was achievable, and what I kinda expected. Duke isn't a great offensive team because they don't have any three point shooters, although they have a couple freshmen who will change that once they break the lineup. They won't play much until their defense gets better though I think.

Still, holding them to 58 was a pretty stout defensive performance, especially with all the offensive boards they got and the fact that they could run because UT wasn't putting anything in the basket at the other end. Garcia had a good game I though. Goss too. Everybody else not so much.

Some of you must have been hitting the $3 pre-game beers a bit too hard. I agree, Duke was not the most dominant women's team I have ever seen, and Duke will get crushed at UCONN, but if Toledo played this Duke team 100 times, Toledo would be 0-100. Toledo will win the MAC and may win the MAC easily, but Toledo does not have the athletes to match Duke's. I thought Toledo played pretty decent defense, but Duke played better defense. Duke did not give Toledo much space for open looks or open lanes, they out positioned Toledo, and Toledo could not match their size and athleticism. Relax The Rockets will be fine in the MAC.

Didn't have the talent to match up. Still need to be fundamentally sound.

03-lmfao03-lmfao Duke was beatable. A previous Toledo team might have pulled it off. We had chances to score and Jansens support beam miss along with King’s fugly layup miss was the story of the day for me. I don’t think it’s a lock we win the MAC. I think our depth isn’t anywhere as good as people thought it would be

I agree with you that Duke was beatable today, or could have been defeated by previous Toledo teams, but I was talking about the present team. This team is notch below the WNIT Championship team. The post play is not as versatile or athletic, and outside of Wiard, I haven't really seen anyone else capable of consistently driving with the ball. With that said, I still think overall they are better and deeper than anyone else in the MAC.

Duke had us late in our shot clock ALL DAY. +1 on the skill set of their BIGS. and they could pressure Sophie/guards because when she did get to the hoop it was another war to get off a shot. Enjoyed the game a lot. Great energy in Savage. We will be OK in the MAC. Athletic BIGS save you a ton of work out front. Missed Hannah's minutes for sure. Ever forward. If you want to get better, play the best you can. We certainly did that.

Can't wait till we go to Cameron Indoor in 23-24!!!!

I agree that Duke was beatable, or at least could have been taken to the buzzer if UT had played better. Needed to play near-perfect basketball and just did not do that. Hannah would have helped with some minuted on Duke's big, and they just lost too many minutes of Q, Khera and Nan being on the bench with fouls. Hopefully the games this weekend will show what UT learned.

But for anyone who may think UT will waltz through the MAC, I think you are underestimating the MAC this year. BG and Ball State are both very good teams this year and will definitely challenge for the top. Kent and NIU also have potential to beat anyone on a given night. Will not be easy at all to repeat as regular season champs.

Very "unQ" like game for her. At one point I think she had 2 points and 3 fouls.

Duke knew who to disrupt and it worked.

I did notice an interesting occurrence in the post game. After the team gathered for the Alma Mater, our 3 captains stayed on the court and were deep in discussion. Hard to tell what it was but my guess from the looks of it they were talking about the game.

A solid bunch of kids who do us proud.

RE: WBB vs Duke Game Thread
Duke beat us because of their size and defense. I believe they doubled us in points in the paint and rebounds. The reason, in my opinion, our guards couldn’t score is because their agile center blocked most of our shots when they drove to the basket. When we missed they got most of the rebounds. They played a tight defense and didn’t allow our shooters to get many open shots.

This game reminded me why I don't watch women's basketball very often - like about 3 games a year. I like the competition among players of relatively the same skill level, its just that the skill level is so far below the men's game that, for me, it isn't that interesting to watch. Its different if they are hitting threes and driving the lane to score off contested layups (where's the next Naama Shafir?) - then I'm compelled to watch more. That did not happen, and I became uninterested and got back to painting the dining room.

Correct. I’ll support womens basketball forever but the skill set isn’t close to men. Not at this level or high school. You don’t see men miss layups at the rate the women do and shooting percentages are much higher for the men.

What you do see in WBB sometimes is better ball movement, less stupid shot selection and better coaching.

Just found it a little strange you felt we should know that you don't watch women's basketball and don't find it interesting. But hey, whatever. BTW, the Rockets have has some great players since Naama Shafir, and Q Lockett has a chance to pass Naama for career points this season.

I couldn't watch it but I followed the Live Stats for a while. What I noticed was the Rockets had a disasterous 2nd quarter, outscored 15-3. Outside that, there was a difference of only 3 points in the 1st, 6 points in the 2nd, and 4 points in the 4th. Also Duke was getting double the rebounds that the Rockets were getting. If the Rockets could have gotten more rebounds and hadn't had that awful 2nd quarter they could have been right there. Maybe Duke was just too big? Like I said, I couldn't watch.

Fair enough. I just thought the quality of the game - on the part of Toledo - was horrid. I saw some shots that looked like a high school jv team snuck a few players onto the court. Just not that entertaining to watch.
