LSU Game Discussion (Split from football candidate thread)
Beating LSU would be the greatest win in program history by a good bit. Not going to think beyond that at the moment, just going to watch and see if this team can put it all together and play its best game of the year. Whether that is good enough to beat LSU, I guess we will see.

RE: Possible football candidates
Unless we are going to completely change the offenses this week, we are going to run into a team that is bigger, faster, and stronger across the board and try to prove they aren’t. It won’t work, and we will get physically pummeled over 4 quarters. If Vincent has any tricks up his sleeve, now is the time to use them all. I think the defense can hold up ok, especially if we are scoring some points. But if we are going to try and win this game 16-13, it’s not going to work.

RE: Possible football candidates
Now is the time to get run some things you haven’t shown on film, but just be smart about when you run them. Like, don’t run that stuff in a bad part of the field where a mistake kills you. Run them in the middle of the field where it might make a difference in a scoring opportunity or, worst case, maybe you can still pin them deep with a punt.

Respectfully, I disagree. UAB has the starters to keep up, but not the depth if LSU starts to turn it into a race. Best gameplan I could see might be what they tried against Georgia last year. McBride had the most YPC against the "greatest defense of all time" than any other team last season, the issue was that Georgia went nuts chucking bombs that we weren't expecting at all. If we can find a way to have longer, sustained drives to keep LSU's offense off the field somehow I think that's the path to success. It hasn't turned out to be the win we all thought it was at the time, but App State beat TAMU by controlling the ball for 41 minutes.

We are all allowed to have our own opinions. Me saying using tricks doesn’t means scoring in 17 seconds. I don’t care if it takes us 8 minutes to score. What I will have an issue with is us running the ball up the middle 3 consecutive times and gaining six yards.

Let’s not twist what happened last year either. We went -8, 26 and an int, 17, -4, 34, 10, 2, and 5 yards in the first half on our drives. We kept picking up penalties and getting behind the chains as well, which allowed us to pick up some of our longer gains on the ground. There was nothing about this game that made it seem like we were successful running except the box score.

My point about this game is if we lineup and try to out physical these guys, it’s not going to work. We’ve proven it doesn’t work. Let’s open up the playbook and try some different things. Anybody who has watched five minutes of UAB football knows what our offense is going to look like.

RE: Possible football candidates
My biggest concern with LSU is how we handle their quarterback Jayden Daniels. We haven't had a lot of success over the years containing very athletic (running) quarterbacks. Think Malik Willis, but maybe better, and with plenty of other weapons to go with him. If we don't stay in our lanes, he will give us big trouble, and we will have a hard time getting off the field defensively.

My biggest concern is Perkins may have 10 sacks if we get behind the chains with false staffs and he gets to tee off chasing Hopkins on 3rd and long.

If I were them (and I sure hope they aren't reading this to know our secrets 04-jawdrop) I would play us without about nine in the box. Sell out to stop the run and blitz the QB on every attempt to pass. Neither of our QB's are especially good under any kind of duress. We have seen that on several occasions this year, never more so than in the second OT vs. UTSA when they came after us and we went backwards. I'm not sure why everyone doesn't do it.

Ok yeah this is right. I spent some more time thinking about it after I posted and I think another big key will be misdirection. You’re absolutely right that we’re going to have trouble if we try and just do our Zone Run Right/Left every play. Again, for App State, that game was all about running the ball with misdirection. There HAS to be presnap motion & misdirection for us to win a game like this, which now I realize isn’t typically in UAB’s wheelhouse.

And obviously need to limit penalties.

Well anyway, leaving this morning to Baton Rouge. 80% chance of rain on day of game. They have already charged my room and I got tickets so I am making the trip.
Bringing nearly all the cold weather gear and rain gear I have.

Perkins is my main concern. They have to play to him overrunning the plays and using his speed against him. If they can't, we will lose very badly

RE: LSU Game Discussion (Split from football candidate thread)
What I want to see:

1) show LSU some looks they haven’t seen. Be aggressive.
2) be smart about where and when you show them something new. Back inside your own 30 isn’t the place on the field to run something new if the risk is a really bad outcome. But you’re near midfield, maybe you hit something that gets you into scoring range. That is where to take the shot.
3) do not be predictable. LSU will eat that up.
4) do not make presnap penalties that put us being the chains.
5) take the bad play and punt. And I am going to say it, take the damn holding penalty if the alternative is Hop is going to get a face full of Perkins.
6) be poised and compete. Bad plays will happen; move to the next.
7) get points when you get into the red zone. 3 is better than 0.

I really just want to see the Blazers compete. I would like to see what one of these games might look like where we don’t gift wrap 2-3 scores out of the gate.

Yea,

I think we could have competed with Tennessee had we not puked three quick turnovers. Our defense was playing hard.

The fact that we are just a 14 point dog, on the road, at night, in Death Valley, against a top 10 ranked LSU team, is encouraging to me. That would seem like an obvious bet to give the points to a 5-5 G5 team, so I suspect that Vegas expects it to be closer than you would think.

I need ## to keep his head in the game and stop the false starts on the line. He's the one other teams have targeted and he does it especially in loud situations.

Our defense played really well that game. Hard to compete when your QB completes more passes to the other team and your coach never made those type of games a priority.

Well if it goes like the other games have gone...we just might win. The games I thought we could demolish teams...we got spanked. So here's to rolling the clock back to 2000 and whomping some tiger tail again. Will be there cheering on the squad.

From Irvine:

UAB's defensive attention will be on LSU QB Jayden Daniels
