Question on transfer portal. Do you think P5 schools scout players and approach them or do they wait until someone enters the portal? IMO, there are schools that go after guys before that player even has given transferring a thought.

With the way things are going. I bet Power 5 schools have free reign to rob us peasant schools of any valuable players we got.

Defense: The DLine is solid but unspectacular. Stout in the run game. Area of concern is that they don't make a ton of plays behind the line of scrimmage. They use they're situational pass rushers very well. The two sack leaders on this team aren't every down players but are pretty productive. O'Malley is an excellent interior pass rusher. He'd be next level if he finished more. Kennedy's production will need to be replaced. Hopefully one of the young edge players or Thomas steps forward.

The back 7/8 are a mess. They play too many guys at too many different positions. The only LB that should be penciled in as a starter next year is Rayner. given that the DTs are pretty stout they should probably go with more speed at MIKE.

Who is the HUSKIE??? The HUSKIE is really a glorified nickelback but given the way college offenses, and particularly MAC ones spread defenses out its super important. Should be best athlete on D. Is Lafayette the Huskie or a safety? Same thing with White. What is Brown? Tough guy. Good tackler. Plays hard. Liability in coverage no matter where he is on the field. Figure out who's a true safety and who's the HUSKIE and let them stay there. The constant musical chairs combined with the amount of coverages they play (1, 2, 3, and 6 mostly) hurts. They end up with Brown in deep coverage or Hansen playing man.

Rogers and Gandy are just guys at corner. More hope for Rogers developing because I have a feeling that he may have played most of the year banged up. Byrd has physical toos but hasnt put together the mental and technical parts of the position. Upside is he's young. I know the staff is extremely high on Knighten, but needs to gain significant strength.

Special teams is pretty blah. I don't think the staff plays enough starters. I know some programs reward guys who work hard in practice with these snaps but having "star" players on teams units is a big benefit. Finding punt retuners is hard. Not an easy job. There's a reason guys make NFL rosters for their sole ability as a punt returner. That being said, the return unit was one of the worst in conference. My guess here is that because Tucker was the only player they truly trusted back there, they made him fair catch a ton to not get him hurt.

The problem with the huskie is that it isn’t a nickleback - it is 100% always a failed safety. Our safeties are bad…I’m not sure I want find a spot on the field for the guy who couldn’t start at safety.

Conversely there are guys warming the bench or unhappy with their role at P5 schools that would be stars in the MAC. Look at Lombardi.
We can all agree if he had been healthy we'd be in the mix for the west, although in fairness Hampton did okay. It was the D that let us down.

That's just it though. It shouldn't be a spot for a "failed safety." It's a position with its own unique skill set and profile. It should specifically be recruited for. While lots here were lamenting the loss of Ducker and are worried about Brown transferring the biggest transfer/graduation loss may have been Dillon Thomas. He played really well there at the end of last season.

If Thomas is the athletic profile I can think of three players that may fit the profile.

1. Jordan White: Has played there this year with some success. Problem here is he may he our best Safety.

2. Devin Lafayette. Has also played there. How much did last year's injury slow him down? Bounced frequently between positions. Hasn't mastered any.

3. Eric Rogers: Fits the size profile. May be a bit too slow to be great on the outside but corner skills and his physicality could be assets at HUSKIE.

I don't know if the P5 schools are approaching before kids hit the portal, but the bigger P5 programs are starting to look like NFL front offices with player personnel departments. They will have undoubtedly scouted transfers in addition to the high school work they do to know who fills immediate roster needs and if they are fits for the program.

The strategy is starting to show up in G5 programs as well. App State for example is looking to hire a Director of Player Personnel right now.

Fingers crossed.

Also wondering when NIU will pop the first modern multi-year (500 mil?) fundraiser they teased about a few months back, and wondering if any of that $ will spill over into our stadium? :)

GO HUSKIES!

You can almost count on Huskie Stadium being a significant part of that.

How do we have so many injured QBs, are they made of paper? Nevan isn't even a runner and he's injured too...

White needs to stay at safety, rodgers corner. Lafayette has been awful at the huskie. Slow to react, and just slow. I believe an extra year of recovery might help.

I think the biggest fix here is the coaches need to self scout. Both sides of the ball did some idiotic stuff this season.

Hammock needs to make an honest evaluation of his meddling as well.

Evaluate the players. Be honest about needs, be honest about where you failed as a coach. Transfers might be needed, not because of fit, but because of how poorly coach recruited.

There are some issues on offense that need to be cleaned up. But they're still 4th in the MAC in scoring without a QB worth a darn and very little at WR and TE. Im more concerned about the depth of talent on this side of the ball and the future of Hammocks recruiting. The defense, while more messed up than the offense, was more scheme/coaching and may just needs a couple of athletes to step in at key spots. Simplified: fixing the coaching on defense is going to produce much better improvements than fixing any of the coaching issues on offense.

Ya it was a train wreck of a year BUT, I wouldn't be surprised if we win the MAC next year. Rocky is the difference maker. Also, I think you recruit the transfer portal just as hard as recruiting high schoolers.

We don't know if Rocky will be back next year. Hampton did okay but he's not Rocky, and for some reason Hammock ran a service academy offense when lynch was in.
He was 88/154 (57%) at Temple, so he is a serviceable passer, and can certainly run the ball.
Cremascoli doesn't seem to fit the dual threat QB role that NIU needs. Have never seen Lomax in action, maybe he'll get some reps against Akron, which will be quite depressing to watch.

Have to feel bad for the seniors ending their college careers like this.

On one TV broadcast it was confirmed that Rocky wants to come back and will apply for a medical redshirt, which by all accounts feels like a done deal.

I would think, based on the fact that Cremascoli is playing and Lomax and Fletcher aren't, that L&F aren't and won't be in the QB picture going forward. I don't think NIU needs a dual threat QB but they need a mobile qb who can run on occasion and use speed and agility to scramble when necessary. Few QB's are as indestructible as Jordan was and even he had injuries. If you have a D/T QB you need two starters for when the 1st gets injured.

I think Rocky’s dual threat days are over. He had 1 rushing yard in 4 games. Whatever his knee issue is I’m betting it’s the kind that keeps him in the pocket for the most part.

Do we know what Trayvon Rudolph’s injury was? Was it an ACL? Never heard much about diagnosis other than it was a season ending non contact injury.

IMO (if true), that handcuffs him quite a bit and makes him much less threatening to defenses.

I want to run pro set direct snap running game next year and use the fullback more like the 49ers. Feel we have 2 good fullbacks. Run with direct snap and less shotgun. We need SPEED receivers to assist in the run game. We have 1 and need 2 more. Maybe Byrd? I don't want to see him at CB next year and he has SPEED. Hope he can catch., IDK.
