TN House Leader ‘hopeful’ about FedEx and LB funding
Tennessee Speaker: 'Hopeful' about FedExForum, Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium funding

https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/n...650401007/

I admit, I am pleasantly surprised. In fact, it appears I was dead wrong about the prospect. 04-cheers

I'm very hesitant to mention this lest the completely insane political rants start coming out of the woodwork, but the ARP just poured tons of money into state and local governments, more than they know what to do with. Not saying it's a good or a bad thing, but that's where the money is coming from.

Quote:The funds are being sought with the goal that a renovated FedExForum would keep the Memphis Grizzlies in the city long-term and help the University of Memphis join a larger athletic conference.

That's quality Commercial Appeal reporting right there. We want to join a "larger" conference.

This deal has been done for months. Do you really think that Strickland would have held a press conference (30 to 60 days ago) and not have the Governor on board with his request and make him look bad if they didn't approve it? Heck NO

Strickland told the State months ago the Showboats were coming to the city etc.. Sometimes you have to read into what is going on.

Numbers count. We're looking for one with 32 or more teams.

Well, guys... I mean.... You can thank Kirk Herbstreet et al for that. After all, they call the G5 conferences "smaller conferences". What's the opposite of "smaller"? "Larger".

For the record, I would prefer to join an IPA conference.

Told the naysayers that said no money would come from the it was how much not if. I’ve heard positive comments about the soccer stadium conversion of MSC.

There is a long way to go before Appropriation Bill passage, but for now happily you were right and I was wrong.

ARP?

American Rescue Plan. It had a "State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund" which pumped about $350 billion into state and local governments.

Tennessee got over $6 billion.

Yep. But Tennessee was running a surplus before ARP money came around.

State was raking in excise and sales taxes during a hot economy.

Yep. It's good fiscal mgmt - without a state income tax, mind you - over a hot state economy. Then the feds decided to bail out some of the poorly managed state gubberments under the pandemic umbrella. And so we got a portion of that too.
