Kent State vs. Portland
The Golden Flashes host the Portland Pilots this evening at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. PU (or is up UP?) is unbeaten on the season with wins over Portland State, Florida A&M and Lewis & Clark.

One thing that stands out in each of those victories is Portland's offensive output. The Pilots have scored 89, 91 and 98 in their three victories. Of course, Portland State put up 91 and I am not sure if Lewis & Clark or Florida A&M are true Division 1 programs. Hard to tell if they have been challenged in the half court at all.

The leading scorer is Australian Wing Man Tyler Robertson who averages about 19 points per game. The 6'5 junior put up 32 against PSU. UNLV/Tulane transfer Moses Wood has emerged from the portal and is averaging 16 points and 6 rebounds a game for the Pilots. The third guy the Flashes will need to check has had cups of coffee at Georgia Tech and UTEP. His name is Sjolund, Kristian or Kristian Sjolund if you prefer. He is 6'8/210 and averages around 14 points per game.

Whatever the case, the Golden Flashes have three winnable home games this week. Hopefully KSU is at or near full strength.

It would be nice to see the good guys set the tone tonight and pick up victory #2 in runaway fashion. Yeah, yeah, the beat Baldwin Wallace last week.

GO FLASHES!

I think you underestimated Lewis&Clark. They only lost to Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges by 32.

We don't want a repeat of Southern last year. Hopefully Sendy reminded the guys what happens when you lower the guards.

Florida A&M is D1, but they are at the lower ends of D1 (SWAC). Ranked #305 in Massey Ratings last year

Lewis and Clark is D3 and are typically average in D3.

Portland St is D1 (Big Sky). Ranked #247 in Massey Ratings last year.

I'd say Portland hasn't been tested this year at the level Kent is capable of testing them.

Anyone able to explain how Jacobs didn't get ejected? Got a tech for flopping then a double tech with a Portland player. Call me confused.

RE: Kent State vs. Portland
dannyb73, one must have been a class B technical. The below is from the NCAA:

Ejection – Second Class A or
third Class B technical foul or
single Flagrant 2 foul

True, but they did score 41 in the second half.

I was listening to the guys on Leerfield from work. Can someone explain all the fouls? It seems like the MAC has had excessive whistle blowing the past few years. Not sure if they feel they can call more because the game is not televised.

I would also think the crew was not a MAC crew (don't know that). I had never heard of any of the officals.

It was an ugly game for a basketball fan to watch. If it weren’t my team out there, I’d have turned to a different game.

Loved watching Jacobs dominate at both ends. Really encouraging seeing VCD’s development, too.

bald guy is John floyd. used to play at BGSU way back. He thinks people are still there to see him. Way too many whistles. IMO he is not a good ref. Went to a CSU exhibition game 2 weeks ago and he blew 75% of the whistles. Other guy Chris Beaver has been doing MAC games for years.

When you see these guys year after year thats a bad thing as they're not getting promoted.

I guess my question to people that were there, were the calls legit? Seemed rather excessive and the game dragged on. Also, if they are legit that's a bit of a problem for us. Just looking for an "eyes on" perspective.

IMO its nothing to worry about on our end. We were significantly more athletic than Portland and they got out of position alot causing fouls. Refs added alot of ticky tack fouls and video reviews which killed the flow. Game was never in jeopardy and if it was we would have adapted.

For the UMPTENTH time and the UMPTENTH year .... THESE ARE NOT "MAC" OFFICIALS.

They belong to a consortium of officials that call games in multiple conferences, not just the MAC. The consortium includes the Big Ten, MAC and several other quality conferences that I currently can't name. No, the Horizon is not one of them and I don't believe the Summit is, either.

That's why you could see former official Bo Boroski at a B10 game one night and a MAC game another. He retired, even though he was a whipping boy for many fans, much like Ted Valentine.

The thing is, you always saw those guys on big TV games because the COACHES requested them. ... But I digress.

The best way to judge how good an official is, should be checking out how many 'MAJOR COLLEGE' games he does, not how many MAC games he does.

And if a guy is doing more Horizon/Summit games than MAC games, that should be a clue, too.

Also, these guys are independent contractors, so they can be in one or more consortiums.

I 100% understand how it works (and no set conference officials) but when you're consistently doing MAC horizon and summit games and you're not doing Big 10 or other higher leagues you're not viewed favorably.

Just watched Portland take down Villanova in the PK Tourney. They did it by 12, the same that we beat Portland by. I would say our team is pretty good.
