The Roost says that 30 players will take part in Senior Day. That's a lot.

I imagine that incudes 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th year seniors.

The Weather Channel is forecasting 45F and 80+% chance of rain at noon on Saturday. Preety much stays that way for the game duration. Sounds lovely.

Ooooooo...
Football weather

What will I do with my girlfriend and her grandson, who will be here for the game?
I'll sit out in the cold rain, but they won't.

I'm standing just above Boyd Vance, the cheerleader who is directing.
Evidence points to this being the TCU game in 1977.
Boyd was also The MOB's "secretary" then.

That's about 10 degrees warmer than the @Baylor game I attended in 1968.

(My blind date did NOT enjoy it.)

And it was momentous for Rice for another not-pleasant reason.

Quote:WACO, Tex., Nov. 30, (UPI) -- Gene Rogers carried the Baylor attack through mud and sleet today to give Coach John Bridgers a 16-7 victory over Rice in his last game as head coach and leave the Owls with their first season without a triumph.

Mike -- I have to tell you that from my perspective, taking a blind date to a Rice football game is pretty much an all or nothing move...... (virtual high five for doing so....)

Indeed!

Numbers & I (and a couple other Rice friends) still reminisce about our memorable social experiences at and after a Texas Tech Homecoming game.

You are the first person that I've ever known to have been at that game, other than players. Not many were, obviously, to see two terrible teams (one was winless, the other fired their coach) play over Thanksgiving break in godawful weather conditions.

I listened to the game on the radio and at some point in the second half the play-by-play announcer asked, "How many people do you think are here?" The color commentator replied, "Oh, I'd say about 27." Back then stat crews used to estimate crowd size, dropping the thousands, so 27 would mean 27,000. I was quite frankly astonished that so many people would be at such a terrible game in such horrible weather, until the color guy spoke again, "Wait a minute, I just saw two more coming back from the concession stand, so make that 29."

Rice-Baylor games came late in the season, and several were played in terrible weather. The weather was extremely cold and sleeting for the game in 1976. UH was off that week, so UH SID Ted Nance (truly one of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure to work with, by the way) had come over to watch. In the second half, he took a trash can and built a fire, in the press box.

Yep, game in Waco in '73 or '74 was also in the 30's.

Rice's stat page for 1968 says 2,500 attended the Baylor game.
I've found attendance records for individual games back to 1966.
Earlier than that all I find is cumulative totals, home and away.

I think that was a very generous estimate. 27 or 29 (without any zeros) may have been low, but from everything I've ever heard about that game, it wasn't many.

I did have friends who l lived in Waco, went home for Thanksgiving weekend, and did not go to the game.

I attended a game in Waco in which our party of four was, to the best of my knowledge, the only Rice fans in attendance. Didn't even see any parents.

The NFL just moved the Cleveland-Buffalo game to Detroit because of weather concerns (I sort of remember when it was fun to play in the snow). Maybe we should move our game to San Antonio?

It was 1974. I played in the Plano/Bryan high school playoff game there that night.

On a rainy November weekend in 1992, we witnessed Rice beat Navy for its first winning season in over 35 years. Two years later, on a stormy October night, we witnessed Rice beat Texas for the first time since the 60's.
