Really nice win over a good, solid program. We hadn’t beaten them in nearly thirty years.

RE: Women's basketball beat Depaul
DePaul topped NIU in most of the stats except the score. Always great see wbb beat the Blue Demons. Some great games in the old Fieldhouse.

Next: Vs. USI at the Convo 11 a.m. for Education Day, Tues. Nov. 15.

... Southern Indiana (23-6 in 2021-22) is 2-0 with wins over Oakland City 87-39 and WIU 88-75 (NIU vs. WIU Nov. 17, 6 p.m. at the Convo). USI is transitioning from DII to DI and is in its first year in the OVC, moving from the GLVC.

Where would you rank this win? Not knowing the long history of WBB, I would think it would be in the top 5.

I saw on IG they are declaring this a Boneyard win.

I mean...okay. Do we extend the boneyard wins to all sports? This seems like a little bit of a reach. Then again, I have no idea the prowess of the DePaul women't basketball program, so I very well could be way off base.

Very big win.

DePaul earned an NCAA Tournament invite for the 25th time and finished last season with a 22-11 overall record and 14-6 BIG EAST mark. The Blue Demons return a pair of starters from that squad, most notably national Freshman of the Year Aneesah Morrow. Morrow broke 13 BIG EAST records, including all rebounding records (single game, rookie game, season, rookie season, average, rookie average) and all rookie scoring standards (single game, season, average). DePaul also returns double-digit scorer Darrione Rogers. The Blue Demons add a number of new faces, including Notre Dame transfer Anaya Peoples. DePaul head coach Doug Bruno was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame this summer and is entering his 36th season with the Blue Demons.

RE: Women's basketball beat Depaul
Lot of wonderful memories from those NIU-DePaul wbb games at the Old Fieldhouse, when both were battling every year for the top of the old Northstar Conference. Both making it to the women's NCAA tournament in the same season when it was just 32 teams ... setting the women's college basketball attendance record for Illinois at the time at a homer at the Fieldhouse ... fire marshal closing the Fieldhouse doors with hundreds still outside, while inside it was standing room only ... emotions so high there was a nearly bench-clearing brawl at a game at DePaul ... and even when there was little TV the game sometimes managed to get on one of the Chicago stations, and almost always got a TV highlight. I could add more, but if you weren't there, you missed some of the greatest wbb in the Midwest every year, year after year, 'til DePaul left for a new conference in fall 1991 (and still some years after, but just not the same).

As to "boneyard" wins for bball ... no ... hard to bury a "bone" in the bball floor, and it originated with fb anyway. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Sounds like IG is just trying to be clever or cool or something.

AP pre-season poll had DePaul in theoretical No. 30 slot based on "Others receiving votes" whereas Notre Dame was No. 9. NIU press release from Media Relations has Huskies (1-0) and Blue Demons (0-1) in the story, but the box score is correct listing them both as 1-1. Bottom line, any victory over DePaul and Bruno is a great win.

Good pull on the stats. And yes, any win over DePaul and that "crazy like a fox" coach of theirs is a big win. Despite their loss, expect DePaul to do well this year.

(Old Guy memory alert): Bruno got tired of some NIU band members razzing them at Fieldhouse games, and it's not illegal to give money to non-players, so one time when DePaul came out for the start each player tossed a basketball to a band member. Taped on it was a $1 bill (I think it was a buck). Even some of us fans were asking "what the hey is this?" Anyway, the band didn't know what to do about that, but they were a little more subdued during the game.

Now that's a great story. Thanks for sharing.
