MyBB Is Emoni our 21st Century George Gervin?
Aka Subscription Steve or Sunshine Steve...

Is Emoni EMU's 21st version of George Gervin?

Both came to EMU after spending one season elsewhere. Both were/are very, very talented wing players. Both capable of putting up huge numbers.

Could Emoni, like George Gervin, be a one and done star headed for stardom in the NBA? (2023 lottery).

The biggest difference, of course, is that we didn't have the Internet, 24x7 cable sports, streaming, etc. so Gervin did not have the acclaim of Emoni in college.

P.S. A lot of knuckleheads who downgraded Emoni after a less than stellar season at Memphis are looking like fools. Emoni has been playing high level ball for say 5 or 6 years (3 or 4 in H.S., one at Memphis and now EMU). He had one sub-par season and some experts 'wrote him off.' It is like a MLB player who hits .300, .300, .250 and then .300. We understand that outliers happen. They happen. Normal To be expected. I think the Yankees' Judge went on a strikeout run during the playoffs. It happens. He isn't washed up.

I’m curious to see how Emoni will impact a game when his shot isn’t falling. He’s got a beautiful stroke that he can get off even when contested, but I don’t think he’s quick enough to routinely beat people off the dribble. Good scorers find a way, and I have faith that he will, but I’m anxious to see what that entails, because he’s not gonna shoot at that ridiculously high of a percentage every game.

RE: Saturday Steve Asks
I think it's to early to say that Emoni is at this moment even a first-round NBA draft pick. Although possessing terrific athletic skills he barely had an average freshman year statistically shooting, at the foul-line, and in non-shooting statistical categories, while playing for Memphis this year.

And although he's shown great progress shooting and playing defense, he has a long way to go. Although tall, his being very thin is going to cause some NBA GMs to hesitate on moving him up the draft board. He also needs to bulk-up.

He also needs to show he knows how to create space for jump shots of his dribble so his shot not blocked, and have spin moves to avoid defenders and get to the hoop.

He can't continue to have the ball ripped from his hands.

Needs to sharply reduce turnovers and look to anticipate and intercept passes headed for his man.

One can see that EMU HC Heath has already helped him, but he has a way to go.

RE: Saturday Steve Asks
Great question Steve and for both Emoni and Noah, I hope they stay one more year at EMU and both work on strength. There were 6 NBA scouts at the game yesterday and they were there to see Emoni, Noah, Jett and Dickinson - all four not ready today.

Dickinson - never will play in the NBA

Howard - decent body but ball handling and passing and consistent shot making still needs much work (he may get there).

Farrakhan - last season he played handicapped because teams could solely focus on him. To exacerbate the problem, Noah also had to play PG (which is exhausting) and carry the offensive load. This year teams will not be able to key on him and I expect Noah to be 1st or 2nd team all MAC. In my humble opinion, if Noah could gain 15 LBs of muscle, maintain his bounce and refine his defensive prowess and passing ability, he will play in the league!

Now to finally answer your question: Emoni is just 18 years old and his body is behind his skill level (which is still not at Durants level). I feel Emoni should plan on playing one more season at EMU to get bigger and stronger. Regarding his body, Emoni injured his back trying to manage a college playing schedule. Based on that, I just don’t think his frail body could handle the rigors of a full 82 game schedule. But NBA drafts a lot on potential so he may get drafted and then have a team move him to the G league while he grows into his body. In addition, I would like to see Emoni working on his basketball dribbling and passing. I do believe Emoni’s work ethic will at some point get him in the league.

RE: Saturday Steve Asks
To me, there is NO QUESTION he is a lottery pick in this coming spring’s draft barring an injury. Emoni scored 27 in the exhibition against a decent GVSU team and 30 against a UM team that is likely a tournament team. He did it in an unselfish manner while making it look effortless. He is a rare talent and it shows and it has shown for years even if his numbers slump or fluctuate as I am expecting them to as the season goes on.

Players are drafted on potential only NOT as known quantities. Some turn out to be studs, some duds, and some turnout somewhere in between. Emoni might not pan out in the NBA let alone become a future Hall of Famer like Gervin. Only time will tell. I don’t see any real way to speculate on the matter.

RE: Saturday Steve Asks
Interesting comments. I remember Jaden McDaniels when he was at University of Washington with Isiah Stewart. Both went first round. I really like Stewart but thought he was too short.

I liked McDaniels less. I saw him as a very raw, high potential prospect. Same size, thin body as Emoni. I doubt if he averaged 10 ppg as a frosh on that team.

If I were a NBA GM I'd take Emoni in the 1st round in a heart beat. He has a ways to go as indicated above, but my God Jaden McDaniels never scored 30 points ve a ranked team and went in the 1st round.

THAT SAID, I could not believe he came out after his frosh season. He did not show enough to leave school that early.

https://www.espn.com/nba/player/bio/_/id...-mcdaniels

All of that said, I hope Emoni stays for a 2nd season and gains what 15 - 20 lbs of muscle before going NBA.

I do agree that Noah is going to shine this year with the shared load. But one of the areas I think he has improved tremendously thus year is his court vision. And that is good for him because at 6’2, PG is what he needs to sell himself as to the NBA world. I think his defense was good last year, but picked up a notch this year as well- and his hops are allowing him to get decent shot blocks. That too is improving his stock. Where he still struggles is the Turnovers- was good against Wayne St but had a few against UM. I don’t mind if he has a few a game for EMU, but I feel he NEEDS to cut them down if he wants to get drafted.

Whether your other pints have merit or not, this feels like wishful thinking. Emoni is gone after this year, and we need to hope Pranger has developed by then.

How is Bates defensively and on rebounding?

Does he have pro potential. Certainly. Is he ready right now? Give me 9 or 10 more games like yesterday against ranked P5 ranked competition and I would say yes. Right now the sample size is a single game.

Later in the season?? He is a lottery pick. He has my vote NOW. His upside is phenomenal, risk/reward, I'm taking that risk if I am an NBA GM.

Absolutely agree. I signed up to read BQ's piece last year for the George Gervin day and have enjoyed it every day since.

Hope this means we'll be seeing more coverage from The Athletic as a whole. Probably tough on BQ's schedule since he covers MSU and UM, but hopefully it works out for someone to cover us.

Seems like if anyone is going to get access to Emoni it's going to be BQ.
