To be clear, Emoni Bates is not a first round pick in 2023 draft. He is a clear lottery pick in 2023 draft. I have no doubt about that ESPECIALLY with last night’s game. He had a very cold start, Bradley was completely keying on him, and his team was hardly doing anything at all for whatever reason… but Emoni steps it up in the second half and manages 20 points, led the team in rebounding, etc. This kid is so talented even in very bad circumstances.

Agree. The big thing, as others have mentioned, is can he gain MUSCLE. He looks rail thin.

There are players. Thinking of JuQuan Hart, for one. Tim Bond, too. Who simply can not gain 20 lbs.

I am anxious to see the NBA draft experts weigh in (no pun intended) on Emoni's NBA prospects, esp. his lack of weight.

We've had the odd couple. Boykins was short but very muscular. Bates is very tall but not muscular.

Brutal game last night. EMU looked like a far different team that played so well against Michigan.

Sorry to have to say this but Bradley looked like a well coached team and EMU a poorly coached team. Doubt Heath would disagree.

Every EMU shot looked contested. No in and out passes for easy open three's. No pick and pops and no pick and rolls. Few catch and shoot. Have perimeter plays penetrate and kick ball back to three-point like. None of the above in last night's game.

Worse percentage shot is jump shot off the dribble and that's what EMU players did all night.

Billingsley plays with no energy. When healthy, believe Pranger a far better player.

Where is Rice? As Acuff is a mess right now, and Lovejoy too inexperienced.

Noah played entirely too fast on offense.

Defense a mess, zone approach, with EMU players running from 8 feet away to close out on perimeter shooters.

A defense should want opponent bigs to shoot jumpers from the foul-line or from sides of the foul-line.

My favorite defense is what I call the umbrella defense. It has a big man guard the rim and the second big guard against all dribble penetration from anywhere on the court. Results in lots of charges and contested jump shots with offensive players hardly getting to the rim for if they do, they face a big guarding the rim. with the three other perimeter players playing man to man. Beat best HS teams (Oak Hill, Monteverde, and La Lumierre ) in the nation with that defense. There's adjustments to that defense if opponent plays four-out.

Rather than play a defense and have a big guard the rim, EMU has it's stray away from the hoop. As a result, opponent simple goes around them time and time again and either scores at rim or draw fouls. At least the defender should be told to keep weight back so the can move and prevent offensive player from getting to the hoop.

Bad night.

I agree, but I have a question:

How did Howard coach UofM? How did Bradley's coach coach differently?

Did the Bradley coach discover a secret? Or was EMU just plain bad, unmotivated, tired or whatever?

P.S. I doubt we find the answer here. Maybe Tom can extract the answer Saturday from Stan, if even Stan knows.

Sometimes a game will be really bad and there were no warning signs.

For me, primary goal should be to have one player guarding the rim against all comers, and to stop the number and percentage of three point jumpers by forcing perimeter shooters further out and getting in their face so they have to dribble or pass the ball. All jump shots in between is what I want an offense to do as two-points jump shots will rarely beat a team.

Howard had Dickinson playing away from the hoop on defense. Not smart as Noah and others torched Michigan by getting to and scoring easily at the rim. He should have stationed Dickinson at the rim.

Bradley coach had EMU players covered on the perimeter, and he kept his bigs inside defending near the hoop, while Michigan did not. As a result, he shut down EMU bigs inside and players driving from the three-point line that allowed inside defenders to anticipate and contest shot near the rim.

I believe most teams are up for each game especially since EMU is a young team and it's early in the season. But must say EMU's offensive and defenses sets were way off and no adjustments were made. And EMU players both inside and outside on how to play defense without committing both shooting and touch fouls with hands and body. Can be taught.

If EMU had tried to have a player between Dickinson and the rim and not fouled him, EMU would have beat Michigan. Even not defending him correctly, EMU still led most of the game.

EMU was flat and Bradley was pumped up. Maybe, this will be a lesson that you gotta bring it every night. These are D1 teams. Bradley may not pop like Michigan on the jersey but they looked like the better team. In a loose up and down game EMU will be fine, but the challenge is being good in a rugged well defended half court game. I thought Acuff was awful and EMU is better with Farrakhan playing and thinking like a pg more than a shooter. The positive was Bates focus and energy was good and he supported his teammates and didn't give up. You want your best players to be leaders and he showed potential with that. Farrakhan is a legit talent but he tends to make the game personal and can get away from the team concept and make overly aggressive plays on both ends that hurt the team. Lots of guys w extra COVID years out here and this wasn't the last older team EMU will face.

Thought I would share this article:

https://www.pjstar.com/story/sports/coll...651430007/

Bradley coaches' comment was very telling I think:

I told our team before the game that the team that sacrifices for each other more is going to win. I like how we sacrificed for each other, protected each other and talked. That's what makes basketball a beautiful game. It's a team game. Talent doesn't always win."

This does not bode well for EMU. Could it be that Michigan is not very good?

Rather it bodes well for statistics and probability.

Each team plays what 30+ games so it means there will be say as many as a half dozen unpredictable outcomes. Team A over achieves or underachieves. That's why betting is what it is. No one will make a betting line on the sun rising in the east. Or one for the sun setting in the west.

I remember being in Detroit many years ago. Tigers played the Yankees. Beat them 16 - 0 one night and lost the next game. Same teams. Radically different outcomes.

I have NO idea if Bradley and EMU played 5 games how the outcomes would be. Maybe Bradley 3, EMU 2.

Baseball is bad example. Same teams, radically different pitchers. Here's the problem, Eastern losing by 5 to a top 20 team at a neutral site was considered a "good loss." We really need U-M to be a good team to validate the quality of Eastern Michigan, in the now unlikely event that they have a great season but maybe lose in the MAC Tournament finals. Way too early to speculate but I really hope U-M turns out to be a great team who barely beat EMU. Michigan losing by 25 to an unheralded ASU team just makes every EMU fan feel worse.

To say basketball is one of those more random type games. No rhythm or reason.

Wizards beat Indiana on the road and then lost to them at home.
Then lost to 76ers at home (by 7) and won on the road two days later (by 10). Literally a 17 point swing between two consecutive games.

And lost 5 of 6 and then proceeded to win 4 of 5.

Does this make any sense using your logic??? The sport which comes closest to 'form' I think is the NFL.
