I think we win. A disappointing game anyway.

I want to see some future building blocks - last game we saw a few. I would like more.

Any chance we'll see Lomax or Fletcher in at QB?

There's a chance. Maybe early. I know Hammock said he wants to take advantage of the 4 games guys can play and still keep their red shirt but I know he also wants to win the game (as does the team) so he's not just going to throw either of those two (or anyone else in there) just to see what happens.

Honestly, unless either of those guys are going to get 10 or so plays each of the next couple of games (that would be 20 plays total each game), then I don't necessarily see the point in putting them out there. Anything they do is going to have the caveat of randomness and just a couple plays isn't much to learn on either.

I have to believe Hammock and the coaching staff have a decent idea of the talent of these guys from practice. Obviously, you do see things in actual games that don't come up in practice but skills are skills and don't miraculously show up when there's an actual opponent.

Other positions we are probably more likely to see guys we've never seen. QB is a tough one to just throw a guy into for the entire team. You also have to figure Lomax and Fletcher were probably running compete team plays all week so also having them both ready to go in this one is a big task.

Anyway... the tl;dr version: Maybe.

Out of curiosity, what is meant by "reps"?

Ie, how many would be sufficient?

I don't see Cremascoli as a dual threat QB, and for some reason they won't let Lynch open it up. NIU needs a QB who can run.

I don't see Cremascoli as a dual threat QB, and for some reason they won't let Lynch open it up. NIU needs a QB who can run.

Do we have any dual threat QBs? Maybe Lombardi but nevertheless, I don't see that as a requirement.

Cremascoli ran 3 times in the CMU game for 15 yards. I don't recall the circumstances on his 3 runs but I remember 2 of them to a little exentent and I just remember him looking like he could run if he had to but that wasn't hit primary game.

I think first and foremost, we need a QB who is competent behind center (or in the shotgun...whatever) and be able to throw a deep pass and hit guys over the middle. He doesn't have to be amazing at any of that stuff. Mix in an ability to move and escape the pocket and we have a pretty good QB on our hands.

Sometimes I see the desire for Lomax and Fletcher as a "grass is greener" type of scenario. None of us have ever seen either of those two in game action yet many on this board talk about them constantly and want them to play.

Same goes for Lynch. Everyone wanted Lynch to play until he played and then no one wanted him out there until he wasn't out there and now all of a sudden, many wants him out there throwing the ball.

People did this with Lombardi last year too early in the year and then somewhere around mid-season, people fell in love with him.

The fascination of the unknown backup is a weird thing in football.

Which is why I asked earlier about how many reps these guys should realistically be getting.

I don't get the sense Hammock nor the team have given up on winning games and there's literally no reason to tank the last two games. We don't get a better draft position and winning games is really all that should matter.

Sacrificing that to run Lomax and Fletcher out there for 15 to 20 snaps (combined) could very well ruin chances at success.

I'm not sure it's realistic to have 4 QBs ready to play in a game unless you just gave them small parts of the playbook and that seems to be a huge bone of contention around here regarding Lynch so I don't know why we'd be in favor of it with two additional freshman QBs.

Ultimately, I don't care all that much and would be curious to see both of those guys get in there and play. My questions and pushback only come out of asking about how it would realistically be done.

Roy Williams love to see him be the guy as a 6'6;edge rusher. Lomax? Feel he has an arm, let's see how he is in game speed. Fletcher? He would be a GREAT LBer, it's obvious to blind man he will not be a QB at NIU.

Would you script certain plays to make sure you saw specific things or would you be calling plays based on game situation or game flow? Because, otherwise, you could send a guy out there for a play and he throws a pick or the RB fumbles the ball or, sh!t any random thing happens and, at best, you see him struggle over the course of 6 plays, half of which could be handoffs.

Honestly, I guess I just don't get it. These aren't exhibition games. Everyone on the field is trying to win. I just don't get the idea of "just put "x" out there for 2 series and see how he does". QB is the focal point of the offense. This is why game prep is important for the position. Someone has to run the competition team plays and someone has to be preparing for the upcoming game. Percentages matter in this prep and how much time is either Lomax or Fletcher getting with the first group and with the main playbook for this specific game?

I admittedly am not a football coach and of the sports I've actually coached at the high school level, I've never once sat in any kind of football meeting or practice so my understanding of game prep is almost zero. So, I'm sure I'm off here in what I think it takes to get a QB ready to play at this level.

I didn’t really focus on QB. That’s a different story since the offense revolves around that position. So for lomax I would script maybe 8 plays just to see how he looks in a game. QB is much different than every other spot. You can have a D-end out there for 8-10 plays and not even notice the starter isn’t in. But for me it would be situational. I wanna see a pass rush from the D-ends. So put some new guys out there on 3rd and long when I can tell them to pin their ears back and get after the QB. If the O calls a screen pass, well, so be it. Might be a wasted down. Putting Jalen Johnson in for a few series is no worse than having Mccray out there as long as Johnson can avoid penalties. To me you can mix guys in and let them get reps along side 10 veteran starters and not sacrifice much.

Yeah, this going back and forth between the QB and the rest of the players has me in circles.

I do agree with you on the non-QBs for the most part. I suppose with WRs, is on tape you can see what they do and if they don't get the ball, we don't notice them but on tape the coaches can evaluate them. Same with basically every other player on the defense for the most part.

I guess I just chuckle when people act like they can "get a look" at some random DB when the tv almost never has them in frame.

people saying what they would like to see.

Know what I would like to see? A Win. that's all. Stack wins. You have had the opportunity to "see" other guys due to injuries. But you don't just throw guys out there. That's a bit ridiculous. There are no practice games. There is no preseason. These are league games that matter. We have a losing record. Do you want to send a message that that doesn't matter? Or do you want so send a message that we may have lost a few, but we are still NIU... and you don't mess with NIU. You do not take NIU for granted.

I want to send the latter message. And I am sure Hammock does as well.

we shall see.
