1. We basically have no bench when it comes to the back court. Toney hasn't improved much at all since he stepped on campus and after him we only have Budda who is a freshman.

2. Our front court is only effective offensively about 5 feet from the basket and in. There are no 4's or 5's with any shooting range. Lovan can play the 3 or 4 but he's no threat from the perimeter either. With really only two decent outside threats (Jelly and Brewer), teams are gonna do like Toledo and jam the paint to cut off driving lanes and angles for passes into the post.

AK can only play who is on the roster and it seems to have some serious holes.

I think we need to play Butta and take our lumps for a number of reasons at this point. He may be very important for us this season. I also think we need to get Bertram involved. I was disappointed to see him not get a shot up, but he was very active on the offensive end. We also have to find a way to keep Jelly out of defensive mismatches. That happened far too often last night.

I might move Buffen to our sixth man at this point. He brings a lot of energy, and that’s huge off the bench. It might need to be like Ertel was last year for a while.

I agree with what you are saying here. We don’t have a true PG once again, and backcourt depth is very thin.

Agree about Butta and Bertram. I think Gaines could be that true PG but he has to be willing to take on that role. Sacrifice some highlight opportunities and be a floor general. I'll be optimistic and hope that he does but that still won't make him a perimeter threat. He's somewhat similar to Lovan. Think of what a dangerous player Tavin would be if he was a good outside shooter. He, Gaines, Toney, and all of our bigs are one dimensional offensive players and that makes us much easier to defend.

Not holding out much hope on Gaines at this point, but I do hope you are right. That would solve a lot of issues.

It’s crazy that Lovan didn’t develop, or at least become confident in, an outside shot. He was however, the one dude on the court when things mattered who didn’t panic. He made a couple of really solid plays in a row that will be forgotten because of how things ended. I really feel like Bertram could just take on the Broom role from back in the day of sitting in the corner and knocking down open shots. The spacing should be there with everything else we have on the team.

I remember under Anderson a lot of times the statement was made that we recruited athletes and not basketball players. It kind of feels like that is where we are at again. I still think we have a really good roster, and I still feel like we will get it together.

Now that you mention Anderson, last night I was thinking about what I consider to be our last great team: the 2004 Sweet Sixteen squad. Here are the five starters from that year:

Squeaky
Mo Finley
Demario Eddins
Sidney Ball
Gabe Kennedy

Four of those 5 could knock down the open 3 if it was there. Off the bench we brought in the Taylor twins, Broom, and Richard Jones who could do the same. Now that team was difficult to guard.

I think that’s the nicest thing any fan could say about him up to this point. If he isn’t going to be a part of the team, I don’t think he will be on the team at season’s end. He has all the talent in the world, and he came here for a reason. I’m hoping AK and Jelly can work through whatever is going on in his head and get his energy focused in the right places. This team can be very, very good, but Gaines is going to play a big part in that.

I made the statement during the game that I will not be shocked if Gaines isn't on this roster by the end of the year, or if it's another Leblanc situation. It's obviously wayyyy to early to know or predict such a thing but something really seems off right now. Like you said, hopefully AJ and this staff can reach him and integrate him into this team in a way that is beneficial for everyone.

I agree, and he also posted something very weird and cryptic on Instagram this morning.

He obviously came here with a goal in mind, so hopefully he realizes that, buys into the team concept, and we all flourish together. He isn’t good enough to step in, dominate the team, and lead us to glory, like we all thought DeMarcus Cousins would years ago

RE: Toledo Rockets
Several observations, having watched UAB basketball since the first game, Nov. 25, 1978.

*Character matters. Sometimes players are in the portal for a reason. You get your share of head cases. We have had a few every year, just as we had plenty back in Coach Bartow's days of getting a lot of transfers. You also get some good players with good attitudes who were just in the wrong settings and needed a fresh start. I think we have a mixture of both in this year's transfer class--and I hope that AK can keep the chemistry positive and mold these guys into a team. This is always the biggest challenge when you bring in starters from other schools--we only have 200 minutes to give, and one ball to play with.

*On that note, with our roster, we have a lot of age, with all these super seniors, but I don't know how much maturity. I hope we have some leaders step up--like Quan and Ertel did last year. I would love that to be Lovan, but I am not sure he is the vocal one to do that. Perhaps Trey, or Davis, or the Brewer brothers. Davis was one guy who seemed to play hard the whole game yesterday, even if he missed several bunnies.

*I have been skeptical about all the hype for Gaines, after watching the two home games, and knew he wasn't looking like a first round pick any time soon. He has plenty of natural ability, and will provide some incredible highlights, but he can't take plays off, and he has to take better care of the basketball. Andy hinted in his post game comments last night that he hoped this loss would get the attention of a few of the new players, to turn it up a notch. I am guessing he was talking about Gaines in particular.

I know we need the positive attention. But I do think all the Barstool hype was a distraction. I was concerned that Jelly, and AK, and the rest of the team, might get caught up in it all, and I think they did. Meanwhile, Toledo was the under-the-radar underdogs, didn't have the hype, but just outworked us and outplayed us. We have to learn to just shut up and come to play every game. We didn't do that last year, and we definitely didn't do that last night.

*My biggest concern from the Toledo game (and now in retrospect, Alabama State?) was our poor defense. We didn't play team defense, we got outhustled, outsmarted, outplayed. There are always cold spells in shooting, but defense is about effort. And we will only win as much as our defense allows us to. We have the talent, but we certainly need to turn it around on that end of the floor if we are going to be a tournament team. (And we definitely miss Quan.)

*Finally, we will be okay. As much as we are prone to overreact in these parts, it is still very early, and I am confident we will be fine. I still fully expect us to compete for and win CUSA. Unfortunately, with our schedule if we don't win those kind of games when we get them, it puts us in the position of having to win our conference tournament to get a bid. But I suspect Andy will pull the team together like he did last year, though I would love for us to get over the hump of some of the questionable losses we've had the past two years. Toledo is a very good team, likely the best team we will play out of conference (and perhaps even in conference) all year. I would put that loss in the category of the USF or West Virginia losses last year, instead of the Rice or Marshall losses. I would rather avoid all of them, but that's not how college basketball works.

Let's not give up on this team just yet. I think our football frustrations bled over into basketball, since we were so looking forward to the light at the end of the football tunnel after a disappointing football season, and it ended up being the Toledo train. But we need to show up at Bartow and help this team pull together and turn this into a special season.

I drove three hours through rain and east coast traffic to attend the game last night.

I felt that Gaines was playing very out of control. He ran the ball into double and triple teams repeatedly. A couple of times I thought he was on the verge of a T, and Buffen was lucky not to get one as well when he jawed at the refs (who were terrible).

Buffen's passing was terrible and Jelly's wasn't too great, either.

It was kind of to figure what Jemison was doing in the middle. He had zero impact. Frankly I'm shocked that we outrebounded them on both ends of the floor. It sure didn't seem that way from the stands.

IMO, the most impressive player on the floor for us last night was Davis. He was our only big man that played big. He had more heart in the game than anyone else on the team.

HCAK was clearly frustrated with the team. It seemed like nothing he was trying to teach them was getting through.

That's probably because seemingly everytime one of our bigs got an offensive board, they immediately turned it back over to Toledo.

RE: Toledo Rockets
I noticed Toledo would get the switch to where Trey was out on the perimeter having to guard one of theirs. He got cooked every time except one block, and it was a big reason why we lost the NT game last season. AK has a lot of experience with the head case type of players so this isn't new territory for him so I wouldnt turn on Eric just yet. If we lose a game before the So Carolina game then I'll start to worry about the outlook of the season

I still feel UAB not changing up defensive looks was big factor in this game. Toledo made offensive adjustments at half and was way too comfortable against the UAB man to man defense in the second half. Toledo just torched us in the second half.
