MyBB 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
Providence 69 Dayton 60
- 2 players combined for 42 of Dayton's 60 points, and a third added 10. Sydney Freeman started but did not score in 16 minutes of play. UD played only 8

Missouri 68 Missouri St 51
- No Bear scored in double figures, as they shot 31% overall, 22% from 3 and 41% from the line. They did out-rebound the Tigers.

UT Arlington 102 Texas Southern 53
- Wow, unsure what kind of team TxSo has, but UTA had all their new pieces clicking for sure. 6 players in double figures.

Duke 77 NC A&T 57
- Strange box. NCAT got to the line 37 times making 34. They also out-rebounded the very tall Blue Devils 39-36, but only managed to shoot 21% from the floor.

Niagara 64 Loyola MD 55
- LMD led by Lex Therien who had 16 pts and 20 reb

RE: 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
And the MAC summaries from the thread I created on the MAC board:

BGSU 77 St Bonny 61
- Neither Hempfling, Velasco nor Fleming started. Hempfling played all of 3 minutes. Day looks like the real deal for BG. Brett had a great game. Fleming dove head-long into the 1st row of seats on one play and came up limping, on another she crashed head first into the electronic scoreboard behind the basket. I think everyone in BG was holding their breath all night.

EMU 71 Lindenwood 56
- Lindenwood is in their 1st year of D1 ball, so probably still closer to a DII team at this point; they only played 8. But EMU upped them by only playing 7. Don't know what's up with their roster in Ypsi.

Valpo beats CMU 71-64
- majority of CMU's scoring coming from their 3 true freshmen. Last year's freshmen class barely played at all. Last season, Valpo lost to CMU, and to 3 other MAC teams to boot.

Loyola Chicago 60 WMU 51
- WMU scored only 16 in the 1st half. Taylor Williams' single handedly kept WMU in the game, scoring 21

Long Island 74 Ohio 67
- OU got to the line 36 times, but it didn't help. Committed 22 turnovers.

Xavier 87 Miami 68
- Peyton Scott didn't play. 44 combined turnovers and 50 combined FTs. Sounds like an ugly game.

Notre Dame 88 NIU 48
- Expected ND to win, but by 40? Yikes.

Tennessee Tech 68 Ball State 63
- BSU trailed by 19 and got it back all the way to 1 possession, but couldn't finish it. Becki & Clephane in foul trouble the whole game

Canisius 57 Buffalo 55
- Buffalo had 2 FTs to take the lead in the waning seconds and missed them both.

Oakland 74 Akron 67
- One of the strangest stat lines I have ever seen, in the 1st quarter as Akron shot 89% from the field, and trailed. At the half, they were still shooting 75% from the field, and they still trailed. Strange.

So, adding in UT's dominant win and the MAC was 3-8 yesterday. On paper, only NIU-Notre Dame should have been a sure loss, so really disappointing for the MAC to not be able to beat teams like Oakland, Valpo, Canisius and LIU.

I watched a good bit of the Buffalo vs Canisius game. I thought both teams had significant issues and both struggled to generate offense. IMO the 6'3 player from Canisius has some work to do to be a force at the college level.

RE: 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
The Buffalo paper's article on the UB game says that Chellia Watson still isn't cleared to play by the NCAA, and Ronni Nwora, one of their other transfers, is not presently with the team for personal reasons. That means they only have 10 players right now, one of whom is a recent walk-on, who I believe was a team manager last year.

Michigan 83 Delaware St 30
before jumping to conclusions about what this says about UM, know that DSU was ranked dead last in D1 last season, after going 0-24, including one game they lost to Norfolk St by 66. They won 3 games the year before. On the other hand, UM reportedly has several players injured, and their preseason all-B10 selection did not play, reportedly because she was suspended by the team - unsure for how long.

Speaking of Norfolk St, Penn St survived a close one against them, 67-61. PSU committed 23 turnovers and shot only 38% from the floor, but got to the line 29 times for the win.

Another interesting score, although not a UT opponent, is Illinois beating LIU by 35, 75-40. You may recall from above, LIU just beat Ohio 74-67. Unclear how good Illinois will be this year with their new coach, but last year they were 7-20 and 1-13 in the Big10.

RE: 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
Florida St 80 Kent 71
Honestly, I thought Kent was the better "team" although FSU had much better athletes. FSU picked to finish 9th in the ACC (Duke 7th) and only have 10 players on the roster and 1 of those was injured for this game. Their offense in the 1st half was awful and consisted almost entirely of chucking 25-30 foot three pointers without running any scheme at all and missing most of them. Kent was up by 11 late in the 3rd, and then FSU started to actually use their athletic ability to drive to the bucket and Kent couldn't stop them.

Bright point for Kent is the freshman Hauser is gonna be really, really good. She already is good, dazzling the FSU players who could not keep her out of the lane at all, but she missed almost every shot she got either at the rim or on a short jumper. Once she gets those to go, she's gonna be a monster to defend.

Longwood 66 Ohio 65
watched just a tad of this. OU clearly played a lot better, and had the game in hand up 1 and at the line in the last maybe 15 seconds, and missed both FTs. Longwood scored and OU couldn't get a shot to fall at the end. That's 2 MAC losses already due to not making FTs at the end of the game (other Buffalo-Canisius)

Duke 111 Charleston Southern 50

Morgan St 59 Loyola MD 50
MSU outscored LMU 21-5 in Q4

Illinois St 74 Dayton 70 in OT
ISU was decent last year, so this may not be that bad a result for Dayton

Cinci 68 Tennessee Tech 57
Recall that TTU beat Ball State. I watched a bit of this and Cinci is an interesting team. Plays very up-tempo and multiple defenses (full court man, half court trap, 2-3 zone, 1-2-2 zone, half court pressure man all were used) and they were very disruptive on D. Have 2 really good players in Mya Jackson and Jillian Hayes, the rest are role players, but a couple can really hit the three. Foul prone though and they gave up like 20 offensive boards to TTU. UT gonna have to prepare well to play them.

RE: 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
Miami got a good win yesterday over Vermont, 79-73 in their education-day game.
They were helped by Vermont missing, oh I am guessing about 20 bunnies (not kidding), but still a win over what should be a decent team this year. Still no Peyton Scott, but Maddi Cluse scored 30. She and Ivy Wolf have been everything for Miami so far, with the rest of the team mostly holding the fort. They only play 8 (will go to 9 presumably when Scott returns to the court)

Michigan 91 St Francis PA 36
SFPA also scored 36 against Robert Morris, but didn't give up 91 against them. Of course, SFPA has been one of the worst teams in DI the last few years, so not a surprising result. Unknown why UM scheduled so many weak opponents this year. They play WMU next, so that will be interesting. Looks like UM had their supposed best player, Leigha Brown, back but she didn't start and only scored 2,

Penn St 77 Fairfield 49
Fairfield was 25-7 last year, although I don't know what they returned. PSU committed a boatload of turnovers again, but it didn't seem to hamper them.

RE: 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
Looks like CMU may have lost another player in that SO Hanna Knoll no longer appears on the roster. She didn't play in their 1st game. UT had offered her out of HS.

I don't know if the new rules are in effect or not, but if they are, players can't declare for the portal til after the season is over, which sucks for the player who may be having issues with the coach or the school, because they can't start looking for a new school until then. IMO that doesn't do anyone any good.

edit: Just found her twitter, and yes she is transferring. Geesh, what is going on with Oesterle up there?

RE: 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
Big win for the MAC, as NIU beats DePaul 86-79, at DeKalb. DePaul has an all-American on their squad, and were picked to finish 4th in the Big East.
Koker is clearly back to 100% as she scored 24, Davis added 20 and Poisson 16. DePaul dominated the boards 40-29, but NIU made 13 threes.

On the other end of the spectrum, CMU loses to Oakland 70-61, making Oakland 2-0 against the MAC.
Watched some of this and Oakland is not a good team, but CMU has decided to just throw their 3 true FR on the court and let them just figure it out. They have some clear talent, especially Sydney Harris, but they really don't have any team flow yet. They committed 22 turnovers, shot 26% from three and committed 31 fouls. The two teams combined missed 26 FT attempts, shooting a combined 54%, and many of them weren't close. Maybe CMU will improve as the FR get more PT, but that's what I said last season and it didn't happen. Of last year's FR class who played huge minutes last season, one has already transferred, and the other 3 got a combined 29 minutes today.

Oh, and someone on the OU boards posted that Mace and Guice are both out for the season with injuries. That really hurts them, and clearly contributed to the 2 losses to far. OU has had awful luck on the injury front the last 2 years.

Duke 60 Davidson 37
This game was at Davidson, and they were a decent team last year.

UT Arlington 75 Texas A&M Commerce 72
Well, after winning their opener by 49 over Texas Southern, they played a team in their 1st year transitioning to DI and barely survived. Watched a little of this, and UTA is an old fashioned team in that they rarely look for the three at all. Nearly all their offense was driving to the hoop and drawing fouls. They trailed much of the game and only were able to pull ahead in the last minute or so, from a team one might think they should have been much better than. Strangely, Starr Jacobs, last season's Sun Belt POY did not start, and didn't play at all in the 2nd half, so I am not sure what was going on there. Their bench - even including Jacobs - scored only 6.

RE: 2022-23 WBB Opponent Scores/News/Discussion Thread
I was also able to watch, for a few minutes, DII Glenville St's 1st game last night in a MTE in WV. This is where Mickayla Perdue landed. Perdue scored 20, leading the team to a 104-78 win. GSU plays a strange brand of bball, kinda like the old Loyola Marymount men's teams where they press for 40 minutes and are playing slow if they take more than 10 seconds to get a shot off. More often than not, whoever brings the ball up court just continues on and drives to the basket mostly unchallenged with a even chance of a made basket or a foul. They also play lines like hockey - two sets of 5 players that change out, literally, every 60-90 seconds. The play was sloppy all around. The earlier game of the event featured 70 total turnovers and something like 110 missed shots. This game only had 39 turnovers and 87 missed shots.

This now explains a lot of what I have seen from Buffalo's two GSU transfers. They both clearly have talent, but often just drive when there is nothing there, expecting the seas to part or throwing up a bad shot expecting it to go in or to get a foul. Neither has a game outside of 10 feet. Interesting the Perdue could go down there and immediately look like one of the best players on the team. UT could probably still have used her as additional guard depth, and she may have seen the floor in many games this year.

Akron 85 Dayton 69
Now I'm not sure what to think about Akron, after they lost to Oakland in game 1. Dayton led as late as 4 minutes left in the 3rd, and then just completely fell apart, and trailed by as many as 22 late. Bass and Ferrell combined for 49 points. Dayton committed 25 fouls.

Kent 77 Northern Kentucky 54
Kent ran away and hid from right from the start. NKU was never in the game and couldn't buy buckets. 4 flashes in double figures.

EMU 71 SIUE 62
EMU is now unexpectedly 2-0, although SIUE lost their last game to St Louis 95-38, and STL lost their other two, so SIUE does not appear to be a good team. EMU still only played 7, and it looked like they only had 8 dressed. EMU shot 48% from the line as a team and 11% from three, were out-rebounded, committed 19 turnovers and still won. Four Eagles in double figures.

Michigan St 97 WMU 48
Yikes. WMU still having problems scoring. Shot 28% for the game, committed 20 turnovers and were out-rebounded by 24. Ross with 17 the only Bronco in double figures.

Detroit 70 Canisius 65
Detroit was predicted to finish behind Wright St in the Horizon this year, so clearly Canisius is has issues still. They were down by 20 after three, but made a huge comeback to make it close. Detroit out-rebounded them 61-30. Wow.

Cinci 62 Radford 53
Radford is now 1-2 but took Kentucky to the wire, losing only by 4, 82-78. Cinci only shot 32% for the game.

Loyola MD 61 UMBC 47
LMU gets a win.

Akron will be an interesting matchup for Toledo. Their bigs are agile, shoot the three, and handle the ball well. Their point guard is Buffalo transfer Dominique Camp, who can't shoot but is a good playmaker.

Ball State 105 Indiana University East 51
An unsurprising score give IUE is an NAIA school, and was 0-6 coming into this game with two of those losses by 40 points to other NAIA schools. Don't understand the point of scheduling a game like this. As am exhibition, sure, but as a regular season game?

Oh, and BTW, BSU shot 16% from three in this game, and still won by 54.

BG 102 Wright State 72
- So, about the same margin of victory as UT, although BG scored more and gave up more. Didn't learn much there.

Buffalo 62 Stonehill 56
- UB gets their 1st win over a team that was DII last year and is transitioning to DI starting this year. In their 1st 2 games, Stonehill lost 60-43 and 56-32 to Lehigh and Providence, so they don't have much offense. UB scored as much as the other two teams, but gave up a lot more points. I watched some of the game and Stonehill's shooting was atrocious, shooting 3-23 from three, and missing a significant number of layups. So, good for Buffalo to get a win, but not really something they can hang their hats on yet. UB's next game will really show what they have, when they play Princeton.

I watched the BGSU vs Wright State game also. Overall result was similar to the Toledo game. I was impressed with the energy of the BGSU defense. Nyla Hampton was outstanding at both ends of the court. They also appear to have four forwards who can play including a good transfer in Day, a 6-1 center who looks very good. Fleming isn't playing much as of yet and Hempfling hardly plays at all. Hempfling only had 3 minutes in game 1 and was tenth player inserted against Wright State last night. She appears to have been squeezed by the four forwards I mentioned earlier.

I'm confused by Fleming's and Hempfling's low minutes. I know that Fleming is coming off injuries, but she is over twelve months out from her ACL surgery, and she played with a lot of energy against St. Bonaventure. And Hempfling has been one of BG's most effective players the last couple of years. Hard to figure.

Someone posted on the thread I created on the MAC board that they thought Hempfling was dinged up, so maybe that's why she's down on minutes, or maybe just the other players have passed her on the depth chart. Fleming is as energetic as ever but her lateral movement looks hampered. Will likely improve as the season wears on.
