Wayne State
Hope someone who attended EMU's 75-66 win over Wayne State game tonight share's their impressions.

Both EMU and individual player stats were very good as EMU shot over 38.9 percent on three's, while EMU limited WS to shooting 35 percentage on three's.

Freshman Lovejoy coming off the bench led EMU's scoring with 18 points. Billingsley followed with 16-points, Noah and Granger each scored 12 points, and Geeter score 10 points. Acuff had a off-night shooting. Bates did not play.

EMU turned the ball over just 9 times, while EMU players forced 21
WS turnovers.

EMU freshman Pranger played a good defensive game forcing WS turnovers.

RE: Wayne State
Bummed I didn’t watch the second half, because it sounded like Lovejoy went off. He was impressive defensively in the 1st, and he’s fast in transition. Reminds me of former Piston Ish Smith. Could be a weapon in transition when he gets acclimated to actual D1 competition.

Billingsley will be able to guard multiple positions. Same with Geeter. I like their interchangeability on defense. What we give up in size to some teams, we will make up for with hands and quickness.

Golson still is a bit shaky from 3, but he had two pretty jumpers from about 18 feet. That needs to be his wheelhouse. He was also not as reckless with the dribble, which was nice to see.

Those were the big things I noticed from the 20 minutes I watched. Acuff seeemed like he was forcing things, and Noah only played a handful of minutes, which were as effective as expected.

RE: Wayne State
Wayne State hit some threes after the 4 minute tv time out in 2nd half to make the final score closer then it was. Before that point EMU was comfortably up 20 points for most of 2nd half. The Eagles started off a little slow but picked up energy after a Farrakhan dunk. Emoni sat out and there was no reason to play him. Crowd was big (think 2013 UMASS) and the EMU staff was ready. University President was there and I always wave at him when I walk to my seats. Back to basketball.
Our players fed off their own defense and started scoring (after the dunk) and sharing the ball. Wayne State before the last 4 minutes was under 20% from three. To pull the upset Friday the Eagles will need to stay close early and continue to share the ball and communicate on defense.

RE: Wayne State
Finally the George Gervin arena is open. There was the same electricity in the air that I felt walking into Bowen field house 35 years ago and I was very happy to feel that vibe once again at an EMU basketball game. There was no Emoni but we saw next year’s team that should get better and better as the season progresses. Here are my observations:

1) The midrange game is very difficult to be good at because it typically means you stop on a dime, elevate and shoot over your defender. RIP Hamilton of the Pistons had the best midrange game and made a nice living in the NBA. We have three players that consistently can score at this level: Farrakhan, Lovejoy and Golson. I thought that all three of these players went hard on both ends of the floor. We all know Noah can get to the rim on anyone. I felt Lovejoy was the player of the game. His defensive pressure on the ball was relentless and he already has a D1 body. Acuff, Farrakhan and Emoni better play hard because Lovejoy will take your minutes. I was really impressed how Lovejoy finished at the rim and how he got in the lane, elevated and sank 10-15 feet shots - well done. He will be a very very good MAC player!

2) As I feared this team struggles rebounding the ball. I didn’t check the statistics but my eye test told me that we didn’t box out and got out hustled for loose balls in the first half. I really liked Billingsley and Geeters overall game and you can tell they’re both talented players. Geeter made a couple nice low post moves but left the ball short and failed to convert a few times. Our weakness will be low post scoring and low post defense.

Some more observations:

I love Golsons game - he played hard and was very efficient on offense. May be a MAC 6th man of year candidate.

Farrakhan played well and I don’t remember him turning the ball over. He got a couple quick fouls that limited his minutes but Noah was happy to distribute the ball and not force anything - very efficient. Noah can get his shot anytime he wants.

Acuff didn’t do much and if this team is going to be a top 4 team in the league, Acuff will need to be ready to play. He’s shot 40 % on 3 pt attempts at Desquesne last season so hopefully he had an off game.

Randle - like his hustle and skill but will need to keep gaining strength to play in the MAC which I believe could be as tough as we’ve seen it in awhile.

Luka - made a few nice passes but also committed a few TOs - clean this up Luka and you’ll have a bigger role by end of season (see Randle comments on strength).

Pranger didn’t do much and rushed his shots but for some reason I feel this kid will be just fine and a fan favorite once he feels comfortable.

Where was Rice? Brice McBride would not see the floor if he stayed because Lovejoy is better on defense and offense as a true freshman.

Emoni didn’t play because I heard he tweaked an ankle in practice but will be ready on Friday.

Dare I say it but I wish we had a developing Mo in the paint that could at least wall off his opponent on defense.

This team is another step in the right direction and it was so great seeing so many fans supporting our Detroit players. This team really reminds me of Toledo with good shooters and multidimensional players at all positions. Toledo did just fine last year without any dominating low post players.

We will have some ups and downs during out of conference but I believe we have a great chance to be top 4-5 in conference. I believe the GGA will be rocking this season and be a great homecourt advantage that Bowen provided too. Got to find away to keep the game at UofM close and then go on a winning streak.

RE: Wayne State
Great posts by those who attended the game.

EMU had five players-Noah, Billingsley, Lovejoy, Geeter, and Golson, all scored in double figures, All five players made at least half their shots. Good to see Golson shoot 5-7 from the floor, including 2-2 on three's, and commiting but 1-foul in 16-minutes.

Last season EMU got very little scoring production from inside so it was nice seeing both Billingsley and Getter scoring well. Especially liked seeing seeing that Billingsley can stretch the floor and hit three's (2-3).

Freshman Lovejoy lived up his reputation as a high-energy player on both sides of the ball. His 18-points, including shooting 6-6 from the foul-line, and committing no turnovers in 31-minutes was very impressive. He still needs to cut-down and quickly learn that on defense his mind-set has to first be on making the offensive player take a bad shot, and to not foul the shooter. Noah too.

Really hope Randle can contribute. Needs to be taught to give ground stay between his man and the hoop, and when his opponent shoots the ball not to bring his arm down and commit a foul. His 3 fouls in 10 minutes were excessive. Billingsley has to cut down on his excessive fouling as well.

Noah has altered his game by slowing down so he'll both create space for his shot, and not get up in the air and make bad passes that turn into turnovers. He made but one turnover last night late in the game. Also, was 5-10 from the floor, shooting 2-3 on three's. Bravo!

Acuff has a reputation as a very consistent player so I chalk his poor shooting night off to his having a bad night. He forced many contested shots. Someone needs to tell him to look for open space only when he finds it, should he shoot. Shouldn't keep jacking-up contested shots.

Rebounding was a problem last night. One can only hope that Bates will focus on defensive rebounding this season as that's what's needed from
him, and not to leak out for transitional passes as he likes to do.

EMU garnering 10 steals was very impressive, especially freshman Pranger's 3 steals in just 15 minutes of playing time.

Luka committed 3 of EMU's 9 turnovers in only 18 minutes of playing tim.

Did see that WS was at one time 1-8 on three's. Was that due to EMU perimeter defenders forcing WS players further outt or were they simply missing open shots?

Not good that WS scored 46-points on the second half while scoring but
20 points in the first half. But glad to see EMU hold WS to so few points the last 5 minutes of the first half.

I'd like to see Rice play as well.

All and all an impressive outing. EMU will be even stronger with Bates return.

Dear Friends,
The comment section of the report of the game in the Detroit News, is just full of hatred for Emoni. They want him to fail. I just hope he has a wonderful season, although it won't necessarily shut up those losers. They will find something to complain about.

There's no hatred for Emoni in the newspaper article. Saying he sat out game and one does not know why is hardly hatred for him.

Most of the comments like that probably come from people that view Emoni as a street thug. There's an element of racism in that. If his name was Kyle and he was a blond-headed kid from Saline then those comments would be different.

It also speaks to the weird fascination people seem to have with seeing "celebrities" or popular public figures fail/fall from grace.

Both of the above are true, but on top of if it is also the low life MSU fans who feel Emoni has scorned them.

They think he needs to be ridiculed for the rest of the his life for the unforgivable sin of "not going to MSU." In their minds only a maniac would turn down the Spartans. They will be unrelenting in their disgusting comments about Emoni all year. Maybe they are jealous that Emoni turned down MSU while the MSU admissions office turned down their applications?

A section of humanity is mean and small. Being an 'outsider' (wrong gender, wrong color, wrong religion, etc) makes you a more likely target for them. For example:
In 1911, Marie Curie was hated by some in the public (a woman! in science! in an affair!--which is laughable consider French attitudes towards 'mistresses'). Editorials were written. The Nobel Committee was planning to un-invite her the ceremonies (she had won, again). So, Albert Einstein wrote to support her. These words fit today for many online comments:
"If the rabble continues to occupy itself with you, then simply don’t read that hogwash, but rather leave it to the reptile for whom it has been fabricated."

--note that Albert is suggesting the victim ignore the comments, but for friends to actively support.

Tremendous post! Well said. Posters should read it each day.

Does seem that more people are exhibiting downright meanness. Getting worse each day. The divide among us is now so wide. Intolerance is fostered and preached by both politicians and celebrities alike.

RE: Wayne State
EMU's 2 and 3-point shooting should be very good this season.

Acuff was a good three pointer shooter last season, and if 0-4 shooting three's in the WS is factored out, the rest of the team shot 50 percent on three's (7-14). And that's without Bates, also a good 2 and 3 point shooter, did not play in the game. EMUbwill need to shoot it's three's well in order to be competitive with Michigan as I suspect it's going to be hard to get to the rim playing Michigan.

Dickinson is Michigan's force in scoring, rebounding, and defending the paint. How undersized Billingsley, Randle, and Pranger Will fair playing him remain at to be sent.

In Michigan's first game, Howard and Baker (off the bench) were Michigan's best scorers and they shot the three ball well.

We'll need to see if EMU players can get to the foul-line a good bit. Lovejoy took 6 foul shots in the WS game.

If Billingsley, Geeter and Golson can combine for 30 points playing Michigan, Noah. Lovejoy, and Bates should hold up their end in the backcourt.

EMU will need to keep both their turnovers and fouling down, as well as to make a concerted effort to force Michigan's perimeter players further out to shoot three's.

How dare you Professor post something so poignant and brilliant on this board! The rest of us don't have your intelligence or analytical capabilities, and I for one, am kind of pissed! LOL!

Great post! Thanks!
