RE: MMB Toledo hosting Valpo game thread
Nice win for UT. They were up 31-11 and were outscored for the rest of the game.

Lorentsson is a big net minus (-) when he's on the floor. Loses his man continually and as I stated in the Hillsdale recap he cannot defend down low. Doesn't defend with hands up and yields turf too easily. Plus he didn't score. Missed a couple shots and looked extremely tentative.

Farmer started only to reward his hustle. In reality he is a fifth choice at G/F.

Second half was very sloppy for UT. Shumate only played about 5 minutes in 2nd half. UT stopped playing team ball when they went into locker room.

I loved the first half intensity. Give Valpo props for fighting back. I was impressed with their grit.

Our inside D will be our Achilles heel all season. No new news there. We all knew that wasn't addressed in the portal. Edu did get 4 blocks in the first half. Edu played a lot of minutes. I was surprised at his minutes. He was definitely gassed when the game ended. He was fatigued. I watched him leave the floor. He was slightly bent over.

Dennis was by far best player on the floor. He plays so effortlessly.

I know UT wants to use multiple players to fill the Rollins scoring void. Maddox and Cochran will get us about 2/3 there but that leaves 6 to 8 points per game that is unaccounted for and Farmer will NEVER EVER be a scorer for UT. He cannot create shots and he cannot make the shots when he he is open. He is not a shoot off the pass guy. I don't think he's made one hoop off a pass/assist since his arrival. He tries to hard to dribble and make plays. He's just not a good shooter or shot creator.

Shumate played well but was a bit tight on 3 ball tonight. He is still a great inside defender for his size. He had 3 blocks in first half and at least 3 tip outs on offense. He continues to be a very fluid instinctive player.

Kooper is definitely red-shirting. He was in street clothes along with Simmons who is also a RS. one other player was also in RS mode. Likely Davis. The other walk-on was not seen on the bench. Did he leave the team? I think I'm referring to the kid from Williamston MI. I just cannot remember his name while I'm typing.

Good start to season for UT. I like this team. There are issues. The Euro players are not used to NCAA level intensity relative to playing hard nosed D. Lorentsson will have to find his offensive touch otherwise he will not see meaningful minutes once the MAC season starts.

Great win. good start. Mostly positives tonight.

Go Rockets!

At first glance Cocharan is going to be a starter before this is over and a crowd favorite. JC needs him in the backfield with Penny on all short yardage plays! Guy is a stud! LOVE the passive pressure. TK must have done a ZOOM defensive strategy series this summer and picked it up. Can't remember a game where we used it more than tonight. Hope there is more where that came from. I would say a good start for sure.

RE: MMB Toledo hosting Valpo game thread
Valpo played better in the second half, give them credit for not giving up. They have a couple of outstanding shooters, especially from their big guy at 6-9 and the 6-8 Green, both played almost the entire game. Green is a transfer from Cederville College, NAIA, near Xenia Ohio ( I believe it was announced on ESPN 3 he average 27 points a game last season. Coach K played a lot of people and set down the starters last 9 mins of the game when the Beacons made their comeback after being down by 26 points at the half. I was looking for Wilson and he finally got into the game with about 2 mins left. It's going to be hard for him to get much playing time.

One more thing, Kent St destroyed NKU on the road, favorite to win the Horizon conference this season, 79-57. Kent didn't look like they missed step from last season, watching them on fox down here in Dayton. MAC basketball have had their way in beating up Horizon conference teams lately.

Jacob Wallace was dressed and on the end of the bench. Cooper Davis was in street clothes along with Simmons and Kooper Jacobi.

RE: MMB Toledo hosting Valpo game thread
A couple of observations from tonight:

*I loved how our guards Dennis and Cochran completely took Valpo out of their offense right from the start with their pressure out front. 7 steals between the two of them! We are going to need that type of defensive pressure come MAC season time when we face elite guards like Kent State's Sincere Carry and Akron's Xavier Castanada who lit up Northern Kentucky and South Dakota State tonight respectively!

*I can see why TK said last week that Dennis is the best point guard he has coached. He can do it all while playing under control!

One additional note: TK said on his Post Game Show that Friday's game against UAB is like a "Super Bowl" so you know they are putting a lot into this highly anticipated Mid Major Matchup. A great opportunity for the Rockets to get some national respect!

RE: MMB Toledo hosting Valpo game thread
I was at the game. The comments made above about the team are completely accurate. Although we used a 9 man rotation plus Wilson at the end there are really 7 guys who will get the serious minutes in close games: last year's 4 returning starter, Edu, Cochran and Maddox. Farmer really does not add anything when he is in there. Lorentsson is not much of a defender and even if he makes some 3s he is more a liability than an asset.

Moss really looks a lot better than last season. He played under control and was able to score whenever he made up his mind to do so. Cochran will be a handful for everyone we play. The guy defends, scores, rebounds and can't be guarded by a small guy and is too quick for a big guy. The team will be fun to watch.

Thought Moss looked much improved. Better court awareness, didn’t get caught with no options on penetration like he did last year. Lots of balance and the Kowalcyk trademark hardnose defense (yes, I’m kidding ). The game was over about five minutes in. Nice to see only on player, Moss, get more than 26 minutes.

I’m certainly a pessimist on Candle and the football team, deservingly so with all of the talent they waste.

But mark it down now, if this team stays healthy, we are back into the NCAAs for the first time since 1980, my freshman year in HS.

I’m extremely optimistic on this team !!!!

Missed the game but good news from you all... still apprehensive since Dayton made Dennis and the rest look like 8th graders last game.

Disappointed the big from St.Louis disappointed

Great way to start the season! I loved the aggressive defense that resulted in 8 steals in the first half and 12 steals overall. Having a great defensive player like Cochran is going to make a big difference this season.

Time to make a statement against a really good UAB team on Friday!

Yeah, I was thinking he needs to be next Brisker/Alexander football/basketball guy for Toledo.

Some guys just have a knack for being able to take the ball away from a guy off his dribble. I counted twice in about a 5 minute span where Cochran picked the guy clean off a dribble - and did it without coming close to a foul. The second one was a thing of beauty.

Cochrane looks like Kareem Hunt in Hoops disguise. More of a running back than a linebacker. 04-cheers

Fact check = true.

Even if Cochran doesn't start, he will be in there getting starter minutes.

Ray J looks to have an A game who can play with just about anyone. That's a good thing. Coach K said he was playing at a high level. I think he is right. I thought he was good last year. Now with a year in the system.

Moss was announced as a G, or what I would consider the #2 spot last game. So Shumate and Milner will be the 4 & 5. That leaves the 3 - which I think will be Cochan going forward, even if he doesn't start.

So at 2, we have an outside linebacker, with QB instincts looking to pass before scoring, while upping his game over the summer to better ball handling, driving the lane, and looking for his teammates for easy buckets, kind of guy. He was playing the point late in the game, which I think makes sense (mop up minutes). He has the mentality to do so, but he needs better ball skills, which seemed like he has improved on. He did have some clunkers, which I think was because of his natural aggressiveness, and I like that. I also don't expect that to change much because that is a linebacker mentality.

Cochran is a middle linebacker. I haven't watched enough of him to come to a conclusion, but he sure seems to get with it, for lack of a better way to say it. I think we are going to like him.

If you can't be tall on the inside, you might as well beat them up trying to get there. The football look of our 2 & 3 guy is great IMO. I love it, and I'll go on record again thinking Moss has a huge upside. We shall see.

Add in AJ, Maddox, and the rest of the bench, I think we will at least, compete for the great reward. But we will see. IMO, we beat a bad team and then got sloppy, while getting people some playing time - which is a good thing. It certainly looks like we have more depth than in years past, but I don't expect them to go more than 8 with significant minutes.

AJ might be the wildcard. He put up some good numbers in proportion to minutes. I thought he looked pretty good. But he has lost so much playing time,. Depending on how he feels going forward might make a difference, and maybe not. I don't expect him to be Kareem, but he might be a great help. Even with limited minutes. I remember games where JT got in foul trouble and you have no bench. AJ looks pretty good in that situation.

I can't wait until Friday, and just so we know, ESPN+ is now 10 bucks. I will pay - have to.

Yea, I read that wrong. I was looking at the wrong game. WTH is Barstool.TV? I looked it up and can't figure out squat. I would be happy to pay to see the game, but I'm not sure that is possible.

Homework.

It can't be simpler than this - just go to Barstool.tv at 5pm on Friday. You don't need to login. You don't need a username. You don't need to pay anything. Just go to Barstool.tv at 5pm on Friday. If people can't figure that out, I don't know what to say.
