I agree. I wonder if Fox Sports does too? It will be interesting to see its next TV deal, especially if Villanova falls back to earth and once heralded programs such as Georgetown are now many years removed from anything that resembles success. The conference will never again be what it once was.

Further, it makes me wonder if the Big 12 conversations with Gonzaga were encouraged by Fox Sports to freeze the Big East out of meaningful expansion and suppress its market value. I imagine there are some furrowed brows on Victory Parkway pondering the same questions.

This is X’s window to really seize control of that conference

Seton Hall has lost Kevin Willard to Maryland. DePaul, Butler and Georgetown have below average coaches. Villanova’s coach is brand new so too early to tell if he can sustain the success that Jay Wright had. Likely that UConn, Marquette, Xavier, Creighton and Providence will battle Villanova for conference supremacy, but other than Villanova and possibly UConn and Marquette, none of those schools makes much of a wave or garners much interest nationally. It would help the Big East immensely if St. John’s could return to relevance, but that’s been said for 25 years.

Bolded, so true and in UC's days in the (real) Big East, Syracuse seemed to totally dominate the NYC market and MSG tourney crowds. They were enjoying some pretty remarkable seasons, as was UCONN who brought the fans too. St John's hasn't been terribly relevant in a long time.

Since the NCAA changed the housing allowance rule. I believe at one time teams could compensate players for living off campus at local housing values. St, John's players would all cram into 1-2 off campus houses, then collect money as if they were renting New York City apartments.

UC basketball did the same thing a couple decades ago. I think a lot of programs were doing it.

Chris Mullin talked about that in a podcast a few years back, said he lived with 9 other guys and everyone basically collected around $1,000/month which was pretty good money back in the 80s.

Wasn’t it the housing money (in cash) that Donald Lttle’s roommate stole from him, causing Donald to have to teach him a lesson?

But the "market" price in New York City was a lot greater than in Cincinnati.

I have a friend who rented a 4BR to UC players for years over on Victor or Flora or one of those streets. He said he was never quite sure how many were actually living there but it was a lot more than 4.

RE: 2022-23 College Basketball General Thread
Entirely anecdotal, but my cousin owned a bunch of apartments around UCs campus, and would hire me to to do a lot of clean up and maintenance work when I was a teenager. I used to have to clean out all the stuff people left when they moved out, and one of the things I found in one of the apartments was Jason Maxiell's eviction notice. At the time I it was just junk, but now I wish I'd hung onto it for the novelty, haha.

FSU got a scare but will get their first win over Mercer. The Seminoles are now 1-4.

AAC had a banner day yesterday, going 1-5 against a slate of

Arizona
Grand Canyon
Indiana State
Nevada
St. John's
UAB

I can't wait to have to watch all of these teams in person!

XU with a 90-83 win over Florida in the first round of the Phil Knight Legacy tournament. They play #8 Duke on Friday.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the AAC has some kind of bad juju. It isn’t impossible to get players to sign up for it, but it’s a pretty stiff headwind unlike the Metro, Great Midwest or old CUSA, or present version of the BE.

This made me think of one of signs the uc students used to hold up during the opposing starting lineups... "WHO CARES!"

XU beat a good Florida team. Duke struggled with a very ordinary Oregon State team. I think Eggs beats Duke on Friday and, unfortunately, destroys UC on December 10. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a 20 point or more beat down. Hope I’m wrong but this X team is a veteran squad with skilled, complementary players. Nunge will be unstoppable and UC will have trouble rebounding. DeJulius will likely be ineffective because X can put Colby Jones on him or their transfer guard who is lightning quick and efficient.

Saw some of their game against Florida and I think you might be right. If they beat Duke that could be a real confidence builder for X.

To this day, perhaps my most vivid memory of a UC basketball game is our win over Duke in the Great Alaska Shootout Finals.

It appeared that Steele was stockpiling good talent with ranked recruiting classes and made little hay with those guys in March Madness. Sean Miller can coach and is likely the beneficiary of that player recruitment work. My question is, after emerging from the stench of scandal in AZ, will the NCAA be watching Sean Miller more closely?

After all, he said he was leaving X, the Buick, to drive Arizona, the Lexus, and is now behind the wheel of his old Buick once again.
