RE: Alabama State Hornets
It was a good start. I like that we didn't get the big half time lead and then go through the motions in the 2nd half. We actually played better after halftime. Defense and defensive rebounding improved as the game progressed. We'll have to do a better job defending our glass against the tougher opponents. I like our depth inside.

Jelly is great of course and L. Brewer has a nice stroke from 3pts. After that I don't really see a perimeter threat on the team. Bertram had a hard time getting open. I wish we had a 4 that had some range but I don't think we do. We need Toney to step up and become a solid contributor to give us some depth in the back court. Lovan just kinda seemed lost. He's a tweener with limited perimeter skills and his D is at best inconsistent. Pretty disappointed in his lack of development. We need him to provide some scoring off the bench.

Overall I like what I saw and I'm excited for this season. Hopefully Gaines can keep his cool going forward.

He is more than a little out there. It will certainly be interesting.
Maybe he learned a little something??

Oh boy...I saw on the ESPN game cast that he got two techs in the span of about 2 minutes of game time and thought it was a mistake. That's not good.

Box score says 0 technical fouls for UAB. I was at the game and no one knew what happened. Bama State never shot technical foul shots.

Refs lost control and the double technical foul stuff is ridiculous. ESPN box score has five technical fouls called. 3 against Bama State and 2 against UAB. I don’t think that is accurate. I think it was 3 techs on UAB and 2 or 3 on Bama State.

Bama State kid was allowed to get right in Gaines’ face after a foul. They handled that situation poorly. It seemed like this group of refs were very, very inexperienced. Also, I’ve never seen those guys before. There were quite a few situations where they didn’t know what to do.

Pretty sure the 5 techs was correct. Jelly shot a FT on one of them but it was hard to tell what it was because the refs didn’t clear the floor and guys were at midcourt still sorting things out.

Didn’t think the crew was awful but they did seem like they were working together for the 1st time. One ref early on seemed to be making almost all the calls. The other two were letting guys play but if the third guy rotated to baseline he was going to call something there for a while.

I saw UAB shoot a few technical fouls but not ASU.

RE: Alabama State Hornets
My take on the technical/ejection, and I don't know if it is accurate:

Gaines had hurt his scratched the top of his shoulder, and the trainers had bandaged it up. Apparently it was bothering him, and he kept moving his arm around, either because it was hurting him, or because the bandage was distracting him.

When they were talking trash after that one play, the guy bumped into Gaines, and it looked like he moved his arm around quickly, as he had just been doing earlier to stretch out his shoulder--or, he threw an elbow at the guy. I could see it being an intentional elbow poorly disguised as trying to stretch his shoulder.

At that moment is when the official stepped in and called the double T's, and ejected him. I don't think it was for something he said, but because he threw an elbow, whether intentionally or not.

If you watch the video, you might be able to see that. Or, I could be off base.

The ASU Hornets are getting crushed at Southern Cal. With about 7 minutes remaining, it’s 84-41. Madlock only has 6 points. He picked up two fouls in the first 2 minutes of the game!

Final score was ASU 58 - USC 96

Madlock finished with 8 points and 4 fouls.

Their team fouled an inordinately high amount it seemed.

Hopefully that’s not a red flag that we let madlock ball out on us and let them drop 70 as a team…

I think we play pretty fast paced so we will just naturally let other teams score more a lot of games. At least I hope. We were a good defensive team when we locked in last year.

USC also came off an upset to Florida Gulf Coast. I'm sure they were trying to put that one behind them by laying a beatdown on ASU.

I wouldn’t read anything into margins. USC was coming off a loss, Alabama State was traveling across the country. You also have to know they were giving the Blazers their best shot given the in-state situation and the fact that their coach was an assistant for AK. It was a scrimmage for both UAB and USC, nothing more.

We beat them by 41, they beat them by 38. Not much to see here.

RE: Alabama State Hornets
jelly came out of the game with 5mins left I believe and we put in the end of the bench.

IMHO, I think with ASU playing quick possessions and fouling to get the ball back, Jelly could have scored another 5-10 points and set the all time points in a game record.

AK didn't want to risk anything happening to him.
