RE: Alabama State Hornets
Bama St played him real physical.

I think their coach had a pretty simple play calling sheet...
all it stated was "slow down Gaines and Walker"

ASU came to play....did not lay down. played hard the whole way. Their coach seemed to be pretty good.

Even though UAB won 111-70, I believe ASU has a good team. We looked better than I expected. I’ve been trying to dampen the high expectations. We have a hell of a team.

Toledo beat Valparaiso 85-70.

We have to do a better job of protecting the ball. Too many turnovers. Can't be playing like that against North Texas. Trey played great. Those Brewer brothers can play. Jelly is Jelly.
Also, that Madlock kid on ASU can play.

These were just about all my observations as well lol.

Toledo looked pretty good tonight, should be a good game on Friday.

That’s all I could say negative too.. especially in the first half we just seemed to coast for much of the time. When we clamped down in the 2nd we blew them away. In the first, We were too lackadaisical with the ball, weren’t quick enough to loose balls and on defensive rotations, and we gave up too many offensive rebounds. That will get us beat against a good team. It was our first game against a very inferior team, so we will see if it’s actually an issue or not…

Jelly looked even better than last year. The shots he makes are just stupid sometimes.

L. Brewer was impressive. As expected, he is our 2nd or 3rd best scorer, and his 3 point shot looks legit.

Trey looked better than last year to me - decisive, aggressive, and showed some nice post moves.

Buffen and lovan looked about status quo from last year to me..

Bertram won’t play much I don’t think.

Butta will be good in the future.

Wasn’t overly impressed with Gaines in his first game. He seems to coast way too much, but also gambles way too much on defense. The team seemed to play much harder and intensely when he got ejected. The fact he got ejected in his first game, even if it wasn’t really warranted, is kind of a red flag. One of the few things that could derail this team is a headcase or chemistry issues.. to be fair, he did show some nice passing ability tonight and made some nice shots.. his jumper and his FTs are sus at best.

We have a lot of post depth. Javian Davis is a very solid, traditional post player. He looks to be very good at drawing fouls, but Counteracts that by being a bad free throw shooter.

All in all, it seemed like a fairly ho hum game, But I look up and we scored 110 points and beat a team by 40 with Jelly dropping 38. If this team clicks and doesn’t take games/halves/long stretches off, we could be really damn good. They showed flashes tonight for sure.

Alabama State was better than the usual SWACrificial lamb. They played a lot of guys, had 33 baskets and 31 fouls.

They'll win a lot of SWAC games but I don't see them winning many others.

And what genius came up with the post-game traffic plan to block 13th and 14th Streets? Probably the Smartest AD in the History of Brain. Not optimal to pick up someone in a walking boot.

Sad to see Rongie exiled to play with the trillions. Hope he gets more minutes.

Love the trillions reference

Agreed on Trey's play. He looks improved and more assertive vs last year.

L. Brewer can play. Obviously won't shoot 80% from 3 every night, but he has a good looking shot and should help spread the floor more with Jelly.

Jelly just being Jelly. He started slow and still got 38.

Oh boy...I saw on the ESPN game cast that he got two techs in the span of about 2 minutes of game time and thought it was a mistake. That's not good.

Box score says 0 technical fouls for UAB. I was at the game and no one knew what happened. Bama State never shot technical foul shots.

RE: Alabama State Hornets
watching the game, I thought it looked like a pretty good crowd for a home opener...
now that I look at box scores, announced (yeah, I know) attendance just under 4,000

that's about 1,000 more than last years home opener, and would've been the 5th highest attended game last year
have to go back 6 years for a home opener with a higher announced attendance (1st game of the RE era)
hope that bodes well for the rest of the season

I hope that attendance number was not inflated by the free pizza for the students.

Maybe they need to subsidize pizza/burgers/wings.

ASU plays at Southern Cal on Thursday. USC lost their home opener last night to Florida Gulf Coast, 74-61.

I see 11 turnovers and 111 points. It’s kind of hard to argue with the turnover numbers at that pace.

RE: Alabama State Hornets
Student turnout was great and they stayed all game.

I know this will sound weird since they lost by 41 but I was impressed by how hard Alabama State played. Madlock and Jelly were going at it, and for a while Madlock was keeping up with him. He is a good player.

Don’t know how many of you remember but ASU coach Madlock was a heck of a player himself at Memphis. He holds the Tiger record for career games played. He was a starter for the Tigers and played very well in 3 close wins over UAB in 1992. That was Penny Hardaway’s 1st season and the first year we were conference rivals together in the Great Midwest. At the time Coach Bartow had never beaten Memphis so those losses really stung. UM went to the Elite 8 that season. Madlock Sr. was an assistant at UTEP and Auburn for Tony Barbee and for AK at Ole Miss, and then for Penny at Memphis before finally getting a shot at being a head coach. I hope they are every successful at ASU.

Refs lost control and the double technical foul stuff is ridiculous. ESPN box score has five technical fouls called. 3 against Bama State and 2 against UAB. I don’t think that is accurate. I think it was 3 techs on UAB and 2 or 3 on Bama State.

Bama State kid was allowed to get right in Gaines’ face after a foul. They handled that situation poorly. It seemed like this group of refs were very, very inexperienced. Also, I’ve never seen those guys before. There were quite a few situations where they didn’t know what to do.

Madlock was a good player. The rest of their team was pretty much garbage though. They did play hard. I’m glad they gave us a little test and trash talk before Friday.

Pretty sure the 5 techs was correct. Jelly shot a FT on one of them but it was hard to tell what it was because the refs didn’t clear the floor and guys were at midcourt still sorting things out.

Didn’t think the crew was awful but they did seem like they were working together for the 1st time. One ref early on seemed to be making almost all the calls. The other two were letting guys play but if the third guy rotated to baseline he was going to call something there for a while.
