Turnovers and penalties, the two things that have vexed this team from game 1, and some folks still want to put this on CDH.
Crazy talk.
I think the HC is responsible for the performance of the entire team, so if a team commits turnovers and penalties that lead to points by the other team, that is his responsibility.
If he emphasizes those things in practice and yet they keep happening, that means he's not doing a good enough job of getting the point through, just like if a coach emphasizes blocking in practice and yet players keep missing blocks.
Bottom line is, Houston gave up 77 points to a previously 4-4 going nowhere SMU team. That IMO is an abject embarrassment.
Good lord... the bolded is SOOOOOO armchair coach-ish.
Where's the player accountability?
As far as the penalties go, we've eliminated the "dumb" variety (personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct, etc.), and the penalties being committed now have to do with players not being able to do their job without unfair advantage - holding, PI, or jumping offsides, stuff like that.
No matter how you slice it, its down to the players now, they're the ones executing on the field, and at some point you have to re-align your expectations with player ability.
I've already realized after the first 3 games we're not the loaded team the pre-season hype led everyone to believe, I think a LOT of people fell for that, but the proof is in the pudding - our defense players just aren't good (check that, the DLine is great, it's the LBs and secondary playing pass D that's horrible).
Part of deciding how to fix things is knowing what's broken first. Your brakes could be sqeaking, and sure, buying a new car will eliminate that, but is it necessary when all is needed is replacing the brakes? If CDH doesn't pull the trigger on letting the DC go, then I'll be joining everyone else in calling for his removal. He's going to be here next year regardless, but he can right things if he's willing to make the tough call.
To me, the HC is responsible for player performance. It's his job to recruit good players, coach up and hire other coaches to coach up players, know when to replace one player with another, etc. In essence, it is his job to hold players accountable - bench them or cut their snaps if they aren't playing well, etc.
That's the HC job - you are accountable for everything. You can't blame coordinators - you hired them after all - or players - you recruited them after all. It's all on you. And IMO that is not really a controversial take, I think many fans see it that way. But maybe I'm wrong?
Bottom line to me is Houston came in with big expectations off a 12-2 season. They have basically bungled that with a 5-4 team.
I think DH is now 24-19 at Houston, 22-19 vs FBS. To me, that's no good for someone who is reportedly making a lot of money. We're talking 40 games in to his tenure.
DH has just had a strange coaching career to me. He's been an HC of a prominent program for over 11 years now, since WV turned over the reins to him during the summer of 2011. Continuously employed. And yet in all that time he has shared one conference title (three-way tie) and one big bowl win, and both came in his very first season, 2011.
Since then, basically nothing, and yet he has never really been on a hot seat. It baffles me.
