The women didn't play well most of the game but pulled out a 64-63 last-second win over Buffalo.
The winning basket came with 1.5 seconds to go. Senior Clare Kelly passed inbounds to Lindsey Thall, who passed back to Kelly. Kelly dropped in the shot from about two feet away over a Buffalo player.
Buffalo shot 50% from the field, the highest any team has done against Kent State this season. 44 of UB's points came inside the paint, mostly on layups from Bull guards. Buffalo's top two guards were both Division II all-Americans last season.
Kent State went to a zone defense for much of the fourth quarter, and it slowed Buffalo down enough for the Flashes to win.
Kent State is 9-3; Buffalo is 5-5. The game was the MAC opener for both teams.
Buffalo has only one player returning from last year's team after coach Felicia Legette-Jack left to coach at Syracuse. She took four of the Bulls' top players with her.
Thall led KSU with 15 points and also had seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Kelly and Bridget Dunn both had 11 points. Dunn's point total was a season-high. She also had two 3-pointers and six rebounds. Katie Shumate, playing on her 22nd birthday, led Kent State with nine rebounds and had four assists and three steals.
Kent State had 22 second-chance points and 15 assists, both second-highest of the season. But the Flashes also had 18 turnovers.
