RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The women didn't play well most of the game but pulled out a 64-63 last-second win over Buffalo.

The winning basket came with 1.5 seconds to go. Senior Clare Kelly passed inbounds to Lindsey Thall, who passed back to Kelly. Kelly dropped in the shot from about two feet away over a Buffalo player.

Buffalo shot 50% from the field, the highest any team has done against Kent State this season. 44 of UB's points came inside the paint, mostly on layups from Bull guards. Buffalo's top two guards were both Division II all-Americans last season.

Kent State went to a zone defense for much of the fourth quarter, and it slowed Buffalo down enough for the Flashes to win.

Kent State is 9-3; Buffalo is 5-5. The game was the MAC opener for both teams.

Buffalo has only one player returning from last year's team after coach Felicia Legette-Jack left to coach at Syracuse. She took four of the Bulls' top players with her.

Thall led KSU with 15 points and also had seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Kelly and Bridget Dunn both had 11 points. Dunn's point total was a season-high. She also had two 3-pointers and six rebounds. Katie Shumate, playing on her 22nd birthday, led Kent State with nine rebounds and had four assists and three steals.

Kent State had 22 second-chance points and 15 assists, both second-highest of the season. But the Flashes also had 18 turnovers.

Full game story, including video of the winning basket, is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
What I liked was the depth. We got 43 minutes from players other than our top 6. There wasn’t a notable drop off either. Buffalo got 1 minute. It had to have an effect in the 4th quarter.

Twelve foul shots for Buffalo and only 2 for us. Not the refs problem. Our guards absolutely can’t penetrate and when the do their just too undersized to finish. We will lose some games because of this. On the other hand Buffalos guards got to the basket. We still don’t have a go to player. It probably helps at the end of close games but overall it’s an issue.

It’s kind of strange that our most consistent 3 point shooters are both centers. I don’t think that’s good but as long as they hit them I guess it works. If Young and Kelly would become more consistent it would help.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The women beat Ohio 60-44. That's their biggest margin of victory against the Bobcats since 2005 and the third-fewest points OU has scored against Kent State in the 92 games the teams have played.

It's a down year for the Bobcats, who lost all-MAC guards Cece Hooks and Erica Johnson to graduation, along with three-year starter Gabby Burris.

Two current players who had played significant minutes missed the game because of injury.

The Flashes held sophomore guard Yaya Felder to six points. She came into the game ranked second in the MAC in scoring at 19.8 points, She picked up three fouls, including a technical, in the first half.

For the second game in a row, Kent State got a big chunk of its points from the bench. Sophomore Bridget Dunn had 14 points and nine rebounds after scoring 11 points in KSU's win over Buffalo Wednesday. Clare Kelly, who also scored 11 points against Buffalo, had nine against Ohio on three 3-pointers.

Katie Shumate also had nine points to go with 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.

The Flashes held OU to 1-of-21 shooting from 3-point distance and 29% shooting overall.

The Flashes are 2-0 in the MAC and tied with Ball State and Akron for first place. KSU is 10-3 overall. Ohio is 0-2 in the league and 2-11 overall.

The Flashes play at Miami (0-2, 1-10 overall) on Wednesday.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
It sure was a disappointment. They were up 11 with one minute to go the in third quarter but lost 84-76 in overtime.

They were just outplayed in the last two periods.

It was KSU's worst game of the year.

Freshman Corynne Hauser had 23 points, graduate student Hannah Young had 20 and freshman Dionna had 14 points. All were career highs.

But leading scorer Katie Shumate had two points and second-leading scorer Lindsey Thall had five.

Flashes are now 2-1 in the MAC and 10-4 overall. Miami is 6-10 and 1-2.

Akron won and is the only undefeated team (3-0) left in the league.

Game story is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
I thought they had it won but obviously not. This team has a very strange characteristic. For some reason some of its better scorers just don’t score. It’s not by a few points either. It tends to get very close to zero. Did it a few times last year too. All players have bad games but it seems to happen a lot more with this group. And it’s usually multiple players. It’s kind of weird.

I was wondering the same thing. First 4 games of the season she was on fire (18/13/12/23 pts) then these past 4 games she has 29 points total on 8-38 shooting. At least in 3 of those games she had 11/9/10 boards, but only 1 against Miami. Hoping she finds her groove again; her production and minutes have been trending the wrong way since her freshman year.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Shumate was like that last year. Starting from the last game going backwards she scored 8 12 11 11 11 16 11 2 8 4 6 9 18 11 22 9

Santoro and Thall go though the same thing. Don’t know if it is minor injuries or what. Thall and Santoro rely on 3 pointers so it’s somewhat understandable but Shumate doesn’t. Her best year was as a freshman but never improved from there. Great game now and then but no consistency.
The up and down really hurts a team with no go to player. It really confuses me that they are able to beat some big conference teams and then fade as the year goes on. Still early in Conference season so hopefully it won’t happen again.

Another disappointing loss, this one at home where we were AWOL in the 3rd quarter. Shumate fouled out with 4 points on 1-7 shooting and 4 turnovers.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Lost 77-68 to Toledo. Wasn’t that close as we were down 71-54 with 3 minutes to go and caused Toledo some problems with a full court press.

1. Santoro 2pts in 16 minutes (gets to the basket but can’t finish)
2. Shumate 4 pts in 31 minutes (gets good position in the post but guards don’t get her the ball, doesn’t finish very well when they do)
3. Thall 12 pts in 12 minutes (lot of foul trouble and 6 of those points were in those last 3 minutes)

4. Hauser 18 pts in 31 minutes. She can score some
5. Batsch 10 in 17 minutes. Has some size, play her more and see what you have

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The first, second and fourth quarters were close.

Toledo blitzed KSU 26-12 in the third.

Toledo guard Quinesha Lockett scored 36 points, the most any MAC player has scored in a game this season. She was 13-of-17 from the field with four 3-pointers. Lockett was all-league last season and a strong candidate for player-of-the-year.

The Rockets shot 50% from the field and from 3-point distance. That's 13 points better than KSU's defensive average and 18 points better on 3-pointers.

Kent's defense has not looked good in the last two games.

Both Thall and sophomore post player Bridget Dunn were in foul trouble all game. That took KSU out of its game plan offensively and defensively. Dunn, who played well last season offensively and is KSU's leading rebounder this season, had zero points and three rebounds.

Hauser will be Kent's go-to player eventually — perhaps even by the end of the season. She'll be a 1,000-point scorer before she graduates. She averaged 25 points her senior year in high school. I just wish she were three inches taller.

Flashes play Eastern Michigan (1-3 MAC, 9-6 overall) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the M.A.C.C.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Best game in awhile tonight as Kent St. won 79-66. KSU jumped out to a 24-13 lead after one and the game was pretty even afterwards. EMU closed to 5 in the 3rd but Kent went on a nice run to get it to 17 and the game was essentially over. Starkey only played 9 tonight and Gray only played 1 minute. Seven players played 191 minutes. Santoro scored 9, Shumate had 11 so they bounced back after some low scoring games. Hauser led with 17 and had 6 assists. The more I watch her play the more I’m impressed. She is not flashy but you look up at the end of the game and she has 17. Kelly pitched in 14 and Hannah Young 10. EMU is far from the best team in the league but they had a big, Ozzy-Momodu who was a beast under the basket and scored 22. They definitely aren’t as bad as some past EMU teams. Hopefully that will get us going again.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
It was Kent State's best basket ball since it won the two games and the championship at the Christmas City Classic at Thanksgiving.

KSU's 79 points were the most it has scored against a Division I team this season. Its shooting percentage of 51.9% and 3-point percentage of 45.8 were also season-highs against DI opponents.

KSU made 71% of its shots in the first quarter and led all but 35 seconds of the game.

Hauser has averaged 19.3 over KSU's last three games. She had six assists and leads the team in that category.

Eastern leads the MAC in rebounding, but KSU outrebounded it 29-28 by having four players with four rebounds and Casey Santoro with five. Santoro was the shortest player on the court at 5-4.

I love the websites headline. DEFENSE SHINES IN SETBACK AT BOWLING GREEN. Lost the game in the first quarter. 26% from 3, 36% overall and only 10/18 from foul line. Lost 66-57 after falling behind 17-3 at the outset and that was it.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The women, playing their best game of the MAC season, made their first six 3-pointers and raced to an 82-61 win at Northern Illinois.

They led 27-13 after the first quarter. NIU couldn't get closer than eight for the rest of the game.

Kent State is 4-3 in the MAC and tied for fourth with Akron and Western Michigan. The Flashes are 12-6 overall. NIU is 2-5 in the league and 10-8 overall.

Bowling Green and Ball State are tied for first at 6-1. Toledo is second at 5-2.

Grad student Lindsey Thall had one of the best games of her career. She scored 26 points, the most by a KSU player this season and third most of Thall's career. She made 5-of-9 three-pointers.

Clare Kelly and Casey Santoro each scored 13 points and freshman Corynne Hauser scored 12. Hauser is now second on the team in scoring at 10.2 points per game.

Kent State made a season-high 54.9% of its shots and 45.8% of its 3-pointers.

The Flashes held Northern just below 30% shooting overall and on 3-pointers.

Bridget Dunn, the 6-3 sophomore forward who is KSU's leading rebounder, was knocked out of the game by a knee injury in the second quarter. She and Thall are the Flashes' only true post players. Coach Todd Starkey said he wouldn't know the full extent of the injury for a few days.

NIU lost an even more important post player. 6-1 A'Jah Davis also went down with a knee injury. She's the MAC's leading rebounder and eighth-leading scorer. Her future status isn't known either.

Game story is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Pretty good game for just about the whole team. Didn’t need the Dunn injury though. The women and the men have avoided injuries this year. Hope it stops with this one. I couldn’t watch the game last night. How bad did it look?

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Western Michigan (4-3, 9-9) vs. KSU (4-3, 12-6) should be a good game right? Well it wasn’t as Kent St. won 64-38. They were never in trouble as it looked like KSU was 7-0 and WMU was 0-7. Western shot 27% and only 1 of 17 (5%) from 3. Not one of the better basketball games I have seen. Kent’s starters played 105 total minutes and the bench played 95 so it could have been even more lopsided. The starters scored 34 and the bench 30. The bench played pretty well. In all 13 players got into the game. Thall 12, Kelly 12 and Young 10 were the high scorers. Shumate led with 10 rebounds. Thall and Kelly had 5 assists. Shumate played well and got to the basket quite a few times but the layups just won’t go down. She had 6 points and spent a lot of time on the bench talking to herself. She is really struggling with her shots for some reason.
