2022-23 women's basketball
The women host Division II Mercyhurst in an exhibition at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the M.A.C. Center.

The Flashes have a ton of players back but lost a good one -- forward Nila Blackford, who transferred to Xavier. Blackford had led KSU in rebounding all three years she played here.

But forward Lindsey Thall, who has made more 3-point shots than any KSJU player in history, is back for a fifth season, as is guard Hannah Young, who started all 30 games last season.

Senior Katie Shumate, who led the team is scoring last year, returns. So does sophomore guard Casey Santoro, who split point duties with now-gradudated Mariah Modkins. Senior Clare Kelly and sophomore Bridget Dunn, both of whom played starter minutes last season, are back.

Freshman point guard Dionna Gray was player of the year in West Virginia, and freshman shooting guard Corynne Hauser averaged 25 points per game on her way to all-state honors in Pennsylvania.

The team was picked fourth in the MAC in the preseason coaches' poll and this week was ranked 20th in the preseason Mid-Major top 25 poll.

KSU was 19-12 last year but couldn't win key MAC games down the stretch and missed the league tournament. The Flashes beat Youngstown State in the WNIT but then lost to MAC champion Toledo in the second round.

The Flashes open the regular season at home next Thursday against Florida State, a good Power 5 program.

I interviewed coach Todd Starkey, Thall and Young today and will write a full preview on the season after the exhibition. There is a little more on Thursday's game on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Thanks for the update cschierh, I forget about Nila leaving. Coach seemed to take the home go road in regard to the portal that has really shook up college sports, especially when you start getting your players poached by the bigger programs.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The women have a big-name, big-scoring opponent in their opener at the M.A.C. Center Thursday.

They'll play Florida State of the ACC in the second game of a doubleheader with the KSU men, who play Baldwin Wallace at 5 p.m. The women's game will start between 7 and 7:30.

Kent State beat Division II Mercyhurst 72-40 in an exhibition game last week. They jumped to an 18-3 lead and finished with a 24-3 fourth quarter. In between was a rather "pedestrian" 20 minutes, in the words of coach Todd Starkey.

Florida State beat Bethune Cookman 113-50 in its regular season opener on Monday and scored 115 and 118 points in two exhibition games against non-Division I teams. The Seminoles have three starters back from a team that went 17-14 last season and one of the country's top freshmen in guard Ta'Niya Latson, who scored 28 points against Bethune Cookman. FSU has five players listed at 6-2 or 6-3 on its roster. Kent State has two.

The Flashes went 19-14 last year and have six of their top seven scorers. KSU started last season 8-1, including wins over UCLA and Penn State. But the Flashes were wildly inconsistent the rest of the season, losing six of its first eight MAC games, then winning six in a row, then stumbling to a 2-4 finish in the league. KSU tied for sixth in the league but missed the MAC Tournament game on tie-breakers.

A full preview of the Florida State game and the season is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Played a good game against FSU but the team looks pretty similar to last years team. They were leading 62-51 late in the third and have been outscored 22-2 and are trailing 73-64 with only 1:19 left. No one seems to be able to create a shot. The offense is dribble inside and pass to some one on the arc and throw up a three. They went stone cold in the 4th and that was it. I was hoping one of the new players would provide some shot creation but doesn’t look like it.

That had to be the longest 1:19 in the history of basketball. Final FSU 80-
Kent 71.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
After Kent State led by 11 late in the third quarter, it didn't score a point for the next seven minutes. The Flashes were 3-for-24 in the fourth quarter and 0-for-9 from 3-point distance.

"We make shots, we win today. It's really as simple as that," said coach Todd Starkey.

Kent State missed a major opportunity when star FSU freshman Ta'Niya Latson fouled out with 4:30 to go. At that point, Latson had scored 34 points; no one else on the Florida State team had scored more than six.

Hannah Young made the two ensuing free throws, and the score was 66-64. But FSU seniors scored 11 of their last 14 points.

Lindsey Thall led the Flashes with 19 points. Katie Shumate had 18 and seven rebounds. Casey Santoro had 11 points.

Young led KSU in rebounding with eight. The Flashes outrebounded FSU by one in the first half but were beaten on the boards 50-40 for the game.

A few interesting statistics:
• Through three quarters, KSU shot 44%, 3 percentage points better than Florida State.
• FSU outscored KSU 22-1 in points off turnovers in the first half. In the second half, it was KSU 10-4.
• KSU outscored the Seminoles 40-30 in the paint, which sort of goes against the idea that the Flashes' offense was only drive-and-kick-out for 3s.
• Florida State had scored 112 points in its opening win over Bethune Cookman and more than 115 in two exhibition games against non-Division I schools. It scored a lot less against Kent State.
• Attendance was 2,209, 700 more than any game last year.

The Flashes host Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Norse beat Lipscomb 101-95 in three overtimes on Thursday. They were 21-8 and finished fourth in the Horizon League last season.

Nice win 77-54. Northern Kentucky wasn’t Florida St. but a win is a win as they say. Shumate 13, Kelly 12, Hauser 11, Santoro 10 and Thall 8. Pretty balanced scoring.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Kent State took a 14-0 lead and was never threatened. Northern Kentucky didn't get within 20 points in the second half.

Northern Kentucky went 21-12 last season and is picked fourth in the Horizon League this season.

Both teams are 1-1 on the season.

All 14 players on the Kent roster player; 11 of them scored.

The Flashes made just over 50% of their shots; NKU made 33.3%.

On Thursday, Northern Kentucky beat Lipscomb 101-95 in triple overtime, with Lindsey Duval scoring 36 points and making 17-of-27 free throws. Against KSU, she scored 12 and never got to the foul line. Clare Kelly was the primary defender.

In general, it was one of Kent State's better defensive games in the last few years.

Didn’t expect to win this one. Hoping for a little better especially since the team has been together for 19 years. I wonder how that is effecting both the men and women’s team. Never really happened before but I assume they might be bored at times.

Yes it was and Shumate provided a big game. Maybe she can become the big time player they need. She looked like she had that potential as a freshman but injured her knee and never seemed to be 100%. If she is now that could really make a difference.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
After watching Sunday's game, I feel pretty good about this team.

Oklahoma State was 4-0 and had averaged 90 points and 49% shooting. Kent State held them to 56 points and 31% shooting (22% from 3-point distance).

OSU hadn't played the toughest schedule, but it had handily beaten Missouri State, which made it to the second round of the NCAA last season.

Kent State had a nice game plan to slow down the Cowgirls.

The game was tied at the end of the first quarter and at halftime. When Oklahoma took a six-point lead late in the third quarter, grad student Lindsey Thall scored 10 straight points. The last seven minutes were played within three points.

The lead changed hands 17 times during the game.

Kent State took a 57-56 lead with four seconds to go when freshman Corryne Hauser scored on a left-handed off-balance layup. On Oklahoma State's last possession, KSU grad student Hannah Young leaped in the air to bat away a pass and break up a backdoor cut.

Katie Shumate led KSU with 23 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

KSU is 2-2 on the season and will play Quinnipiac, a consistently good mid-major, on Saturday in the first round of the Christmas City Classic in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Detailed game story is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Nice win for the Flashes. As far as OSU's win over Missouri State, though, this year's Missouri State team has nothing in common with last year's NCAA tournament team. This year's version has a new coach and new players and is not good.

I’ve noticed that Blackford has not played 1 minute of Xavier’s first six games. Have you heard she is injured? They played 11 players so you would think she would have played some by now.

I find Blackford mentioned in a couple of season preview stories, the most recent tw weeks ago. But like you, I see nothing from her in box scores nor anything abou why not.

IMO, she was not that good. Non athletic and very poor foot work. Coach built some sets around her because he needed her size.

I tend to agree with you. She could rebound but needed a lot of help to score. It wouldn’t surprise me if she is not playing a lot because she can’t break through at Xavier. Zero minutes does surprise me though that’s why I wonder if she is injured.
