RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Nice 58-55 win against Quinnipiac. Noticed Shumate only played 15 minutes. I hope she didn’t get hurt. Assuming she didn’t she only took 1 shot and had zero points. Not very Shumate like this year.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Quinnipiac had been 12th in last week's Mid-Major Top 25 poll. Kent State was ranked 17th.

The Flashes fell behind by nine points in the first quarter but tied the game just before halftime. They took the lead with a 3-pointer a minute into the second half and never trailed after that.

As it has all year, defense drove the Flashes. Quinnipiac made 3-of-11 three-point shots. (For the year, opponents are shooting 27.4% from 3-point distance.)

In the fourth quarter, Quinnipiac went 4-for-17 shooting and at one point missed 14-of-15 shots.

Lindsey Thall had 18 points for Kent State. Junior point guard Casey Santoro had 15, six rebounds and three assists — all season highs.

Kent State's shooting has been no better. The Flashes are shooting 36.5% from the field and 26.4% from 3-point distance.

--

Shumate wasn't hurt. The team went with a front line of Thall and Bridget Dunn to match up with a tall Quinnipiac team.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
Flashes are now 4-2 after winning the Christmas City Classic championship game in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Thall was tournament MVP after scoring 38 points in two games. Casey Santoro (30 points over two days) also made the all-tournament teams.

KSU made 10-of-22 three-point shots — its best of the season by 10 points.

After holding Southern Illinois to 24% for the first 29 minutes, Flashes gave up five straight points at the end of the third quarter and five more to start the fourth.

SIU outscored KSU 32-23 in the final period.

Still, Kent led for all but 21 seconds of the game.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The women played their worst defense of the season and fell at Duquesne 73-67.

Duquesne made 48% of its shots and 56% of its 3-pointers. That's better than any team, including the three Power 5s KSU has played, has shot against the Flashes.

For the first half, Kent State also shot better than it had this season — 52% overall and 52% on 3s.

But in the second half, the Flashes shot just 23% and went 3-for-15 in the fourth quarter.

Casey Santoro led Kent with 13 points and seven assists. Hannah Young made her first four 3-point attempts but didn't score after that. Lindsey Thall, KSU's leading scorer, went 2-for-13 and had no rebounds.

The Flashes are 5-3 and play Hiram at home at 2 p.m. Sunday. Duquesne is 7-2.

Watch a bit of the second half. KSU continued to press throughout the half. Low-class, IMHO. Coach should know better.

I hate it when coaches do that. Maybe since it wasn't an official game for Hiram the coach felt it didn't matter.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The game was an utter rout. It started 14-0, then was 22-1, then 31-6 at the end of the first quarter.

71 points is the biggest margin of victory in Kent State basketball history — men's or women's.

No regular starter played more than 17 minutes. No one played more than 20. Everyone in uniform played at least nine minutes; all but one played more than 12. Everyone scored. Five players had career highs.

Leading scorer Katie Shumate played 12 minutes (and scored 18 points). Second-leading scorer Lindsey THall didn't play at all. She suffered a minor ankle injury against Duquesne earlier in the week.

Comments on comments:

Why play Hiram at all? "Schedule balance," coach Starkey said when the schedule was announced. KSU's first eight games were the 12th toughest schedule in the country, according to a stats site I follow.

Most MAC schools play a D3 team in the preseason. I'm not sure it's a good idea.

Why play two D3s in a row? Good question.

Why press when you're 50 points ahead? KSU didn't press more than 10% of the time, and they seemed to be working on a defense they hadn't used much. In the second half, it was mostly reserves. I don't think any starter played more than eight minutes.

It was an exhibition for Hiram because D3s are limited to 25 regular-season games (Kent will play at least 30). It counts in KSU's record, but NCAA and national rankings sites don't include stats or scores in determining leaders and tournament spots.

Thanks, cschierh. Good report. I don't get to nearly as many women's games as i used to, so I really look forward to your summaries.

That game should have been played the first week of November and the same goes for the Otterbein game. I know scheduling isn’t the easiest thing to accomplish but other then getting some rest I really don’t see scheduling these games back to back after already playing 8 or so games. I understand pressing to work on there game etc. but I question whether that does much good against D3 competition. A weaker D1 team would have been a little better.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
I think that the Hiram game was the result of wanting to play at home Saturday because finals are this week, and the players needed the week off - but everyone else being in the same boat looking for home games the weekend before finals.

I guess the key point is to keep the players fresh without overstressing the academic side.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The women pounded another Division III school — Otterbein this time — 97-35. Ten days ago they beat Hiram 105-33.

The 72-point margin against Hiram was the largest in school history. The 61-point margin against Otterbein tied for third highest.

Every KSU player scored at least two points and grabbed at least one rebound. Everyone played at least seven minutes, and all but one played at least 10 minutes. No one played more than 18 minutes.

Despite all those points, top scorer was freshman Corynne Hauser with 13. Graduate students Lindsey Thall and Abby Ogle, and freshman Dionna Gray all had 12.

Kent State is now 7-3. Otterbein is 5-4.

The Flashes now break for Christmas and return next week to prepare for their last non-conference game, which is against Coppin State at 1 p.m. Dec. 31. Coppin State is 3-9.

Mid-American Conference play starts Wednesday, Jan. 4, when the Flashes host Buffalo. The Bulls are 3-4 so far this season.

Nice balanced scoring to pull out an OT win again a poor Coppin St. team, five in double figures. Shumate with 11 points despite going 1-15 from the field.

Coppin also lost to Akron in overtime on Thursday.

Coppin didn't look like a 3-10 team to me. KSU was 1 of 11 in fourth quarter.

RE: 2022-23 women's basketball
The score was KSU 72, Coppin State 69.

After making just one basket in the fourth quarter, KSU didn't miss a shot in overtime. Lindsey Thall hit a 3-point basket with 40 seconds ago to give KSU the lead for the last time.

Thall finished with 15 points and four 4-pointers. Freshman Corynne Hauser had 12 points and Casey Santoro, Clare Kelly and Katie Shumate 11. Shumate also had 10 rebounds. Hauser had five assists.

KSU finished nonconference play at 8-3, the same record as MAC foes Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan. Bowling Green is 11-1. Akron and Toledo are 9-2 and Ball State is 10-3.

Kent State’s non-conference schedule was by far the toughest in the league, ranking 36th in Division I by WarrenNolan.com, an analytics site.

The Flashes open MAC play Wednesday against Buffalo (5-4). The game is at 7 p.m. at the M.A.C. Center.

Blackford has finally logged some playing time at Xavier. In the last 6 games she has played 20 minutes per game, scored 5 pts and got 5 rebounds per game. She must have been hurt or ineligible prior to. Makes a little more sense to me.
