Let's also not forget that even though it was never acknowledged, last year's load of "bigs" was to me at least an attempt to bring in some cash using whatever connections Burno had. (I even dug up a study or article somewhere about how P5s were/are paying $50,000+up as payday guarantees. ... Dammit. I copied but can't find anything when I want it.)

Some guys graduated/left and a bunch of newcomers are in. Because of the above -- was definitely not a normal o-o-c for NIU -- I almost feel like this is Burno's season 1. Anyway, to me this lighter season (1 DII exhibition and 2 DIIs in the o-o-c slate) is probably a better start for a new coach and a load of new players.

So sit back, enjoy and see what happens.

Interesting about programs getting paid to take guys off the P5 hands.

And, if I'm not mistaken, last years' "bigs" that he brought in was just Chris Osten, right? He inherited both Okanu and Makuoi from Montgomery when Monty tried to save his job by bringing in nothing but transfers instead of freshmen.

Anyway, whichever year it really is for Burno, it does need to be acknowledged that he as almost completely turned over the roster in 2 years. He inherited a pile of garbage (mostly) and the only thing remaining is Anthony Crump, which imo Burno has actually managed to polish up a bit.

Well...Crump and Drew Weimers which...like that matters.

I didn't necessarily like that he lost Kon and Myrick this past offseason but neither of those guys did much for me when I watched them and, we're probably better off with Coit than Kon and both Niederhäuser and Amos over Myrick. Kon signed on with Colorado Christian (D-II) and Myrick hasn't landed anywhere. I like both guys when he inked them but I like the guys he's brought in this year much more.

Anyway, this is now basically his roster (I'm convinced he's adopted Anthony Crump). It's not finished by any stretch of the imagination but he's got a lot to work with. It'll be interesting to see how Niederhäuser develops over the year. I really think Burno is going to nurture him along pretty slowly.

He's also got some interesting offers out for next year. One he already has a VC on is a 6'8" SF named Seck Zongo from The Patrick School, which is where Zarique Nutter went to HS. I'm starting to think Burno may have a connection there.

He's also got offers out to two JUCO 7 footers. I've not seen any video on any of them yet, but 7 foot is 7 foot (unless your name is Owen Hamilton, I suppose...)

Btw, to the best of my ability to decipher things, I think...if he avoids transfers...Burno could conceivably keep this roster intact for next year and still bring in 3 newcomers. The only "seniors" listed are Kaleb Thornton, Darweshi Hunter, Anthony Crump, and Drew Weimers.

Obviously Weimers is a redshirt so there's no scholarship to be gained or lost. But I believe Thornton, Hunter and Crump all qualify for the extra covid year (the comments from Crump have me convinced he's coming back for another year). Maybe Hunter doesn't. Either way, they could keep everyone (except maybe Hunter) and still get those scholarships to give out (obviously, he's already got a commit with Zongo, so that would leave 2 others). Granted, you always have to consider the guys who graduate and decide to move on at that point (which I never hold against them). But, even if he lost both Thornton and Hunter, it wouldn't be any kind of great loss. I'm not sure either of those guys should be starting now anyway (Russel may be better than Thornton right now and, while I'd probably start Thornton over Hunter, I like the size of Plintauskas and really want to watch him play at this level. I like the video I saw on him but that wasn't the best way to make a decision on him now).

As we all know, the transfer portal is a b!tch but this will be the year where we see what kind of loyalty Burno builds with his guys.

I might be wrong, but when PVK was talking about "bigs", I think he was referring to scheduling P5 teams, not "bigs" in a player vernacular.

Yes I was r.e. P5 payouts and comparing schedules. ... But Big Red's usual in-depth analysis of players is pretty interesting.

What cracks me up is the thought of P5 team paying a G5 team to take a player that is taking a scholarship spot on their team. I actually can see this happen down the road.

P5 coach: Please take this guy off of our roster...He will not transfer and he is not that good.

G5 coach: But his major is Pre-Law and we do not have a Law School.

P5 coach: But you have a Pre-Med program. What's the difference?(Animal House reference).

Coit hit two quick 3s and Amos got one in the last 5-6 minutes, which pretty much put NIU in a position to win. So NIU got them when it needed them.

I am more concerned about rebounding.

Overall McKendree out-rebounded NIU 47-36, but it's *what kind* of rebounds that matters ... and indicates a weakness that can lose games.

NIU got ZERO second-chance points; it had only 5 offensive rebounds.

McKendree had 17 second-chance points; it had 14 offensive rebounds.

That's 9 of the 11 difference in total rebounds ... and the points they got that came with it.

I'll ask -- maybe player guru Big Red -- does NIU have some guys who can get the damn ball under NIU's own basket?

Of course they do, but they don't have anyone who will be playing right now who I'd say is a natural at it. But guards can rebound, its just about positioning and getting used to playing with guys and anticipating where errant shots are going to end up. You don't always have to box out to rebound (but it helps obviously).

Niederhäuser is big and will probably be a rebounder when he's on the floor. Other than that, the only post presence is Durosinmi. He's the only big who is strong enough to fight it out down low.

Guys like Crump and Amos (and probably a guy like Nutter) will rebound because of their length and athleticism but that's often a work ethic/opportunistic type of thing.

But, the last few years, one of our best rebounders (situationally) was often Hankerson and before him, Cochran was a beast rebounder and he wasn't taller than anyone.

Anyway, sure, I'd expect Niederhäuser to be a good rebounder and Durosinmi should be good at it because he's going to be counted on to play defense and rebound when he's in (and probably foul a few times).

Just remember, even with the 10 extra practices and the 3 games in Canada, we have a ton of guys who are getting their first real game action together (let alone a few international guys) and it's going to take a minute to get them on the same page with anticipation and spacing. That's really hard to fully establish in practice.

Pretty simplistic to sum up college basketball on how many 3 point field goals teams make in a game. Top four teams last year in the MAC were Toledo, Kent, Ohio and Akron. Only Ohio was in the top half of the MAC in 3 pointers per game. The other three were 7th, 9th and 10th in the MAC out of 12 teams. To win games in the MAC a team needs good perimeter defense along with an efficient offense while rebounding the basketball. The difference between the best and worst 3 point fields goals made is less than 4 a game. That is only 4 points a game at most.

I tend to agree with you regarding perimeter defense. Our worst teams have been squads that got completely evicerated behind the arc. If you can't guard against 3s, then a decent shooting team will just kill you out there and shoot way better than their average.

Cleaning up rebounds and eliminating second chance opportunities will be key for this squad. I think they'll shoot fine from outside and struggle down low inside. The majority of their points are going to come from the guards (both inside and out). So, they have to play pressure defense, force turnovers and get to loose balls.

In all honesty, Monty's teams typically did that kind of thing pretty well. They just couldn't ever shoot (outside of a few guys like German and Thorpe).

Not simplistic at all! When Montgomery was here his teams were at the top of the MAC in defensive and rebounds but at the bottom in 3pt field goal percentage and more importantly 3’ made.

And more significant and important, bottom of the league in contending for the conference tournament.

Maybe for them but our schedule says it's a regular game. Not only that, but I've also heard Brandon on Huskies on Tap refer to it as a regular season game (the season opener).

It's also listed on ESPN as a regular season game where the McKendree game was not.

Correct. It can be an exhibition for one team and a regular season game for the other team. It helps teams to manage their schedules and stay within the allowable number of games.

Maybe Burno should do that every time they lose, declare it an exhibition game. If he did that last year, they would have 9-0.

Wow. A game that matters to one team but doesn't matter to the other team! That will ensure a victory for us, right? Imagine if we lose. To a div II team on our home court. Hope they aren't better than McKendree!

So is it an exhibition game or not?

Maybe for them but our schedule says it's a regular game. Not only that, but I've also heard Brandon on Huskies on Tap refer to it as a regular season game (the season opener).

It's also listed on ESPN as a regular season game where the McKendree game was not.

Have faith! I’m gonna challenge this team to make a 3-pointer for every hot dog I eat. I plan on being quite hungry. I will just mosey on up to concessions, buy a box load of hot dogs, and………..oh, oh, never mind. We’re gonna lose.

I didn't think you went to tuesday games. Even though the last time we played the Prairie Stars they held German and Highsmith to six pts apiece, I am counting on a twenty point (or more) victory for the Huskies. Last year the Prairie Stars lost twice to McKendree and on their website the only players who had available stats totaled 30.6 points. And none of the freshmen or transfers looked impressive.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will do, but I suspect it will be a challenge as usual. I must leave some special pheromone in my seat that attracts people. My wife, however, is ready to leave me because of the special “pheromones” I leave throughout the house.

This will be a hard-fought game. Unless the Huskies learned a lesson from the McKendree debacle, they will lose. Looking forward to seeing what this team looks like, but I have zero expectations.
