Don't want to disappoint you so I'll continue insisting Monty was bad. However, if you're longing for those days, then the bar for Huskie basketball remains a foot off the ground.

Yep, our records under the last several coaches (going way back) were abysmal. It got to the point where a .500 record or close to it was time for celebration. This is why the games at the Convo are so predictable and dismal. It's also the reason why there is barely 1,000 in attendance most games. Basketball has gone from something exciting several decades ago to zilch. I expect the same this year. I support the team with my season ticket purchases (as I have for many years), but unless there is some measurable turnaround, I probably won't attend more than 2 or 3 games this year. It's sad and SO depressing.

You got me thinking about past coaches which brought me to Hammel. He built that 1996 NCAA team and they weren't to shabby. My question to the board is why do you think Hammel could not sustain that level of coaching and play?

We should have a reunion of old posters who were banned or got burned out (or sent to a sanitarium), such as Maddawgz, NIU85Alum, sterling1man, and from my beginning days on the old Teamyates board......Mike Smetko!! There are MANY others!

I know he had many handles, but is WhiskeyDi**/NigelincubatorJones one of these names you mentioned? We can never have a reunion with out the man who talks on a blower. Also, we cannot forget about NorthCoast.

Crump and Amos were the only "bigs" that got substantial minutes looking at box score and after watching Amos in high school he doesn't seem like a PF that will spend a ton of time in the post. Durosinmi (transfer from St. Bonaventure) was only other that saw floor and he got 6 minutes against McKendree. Hoping Niederhauser (Swiss FR Big) was an injury precaution holdout, thought we would need to use his size right away.

Yes, WhiskeyDi**/NigelincubatorJones was originally known as NIU85Alum. He ended up in an institution for pounding sand with his blower.

Yup, neither Crump nor Amos are post presences. They are both inside mismatch kind of players and Amos can shoot from the outside a bit. They're both useful (Amos could be quite good) but they aren't inside presence guys.

Right now, we don't have anyone that fits that description. Durosinmi is hopefully better than Chris Osten. I do think Niederhauser will or can be pretty good but Burno is going to take it real slow with him, I believe. Probably because he actually wants to develop him. Sh!t, if he could make both Okanu and Makuoi not frustrate me 100% of the time last year, he should be able to make Niederhauser into something respectable.

We were at the game last night.

Williams looked good, as usual. I was pleasantly surprised by Nutter and Coit.

To me, the game felt sloppy, even moreso than I'd expect in an exhibition. But, again, that could just be me.

What did anyone who was there think of the new lights? We sit about halfway up in the lower bowl and some of the lights are canted towards us.

I wasn't at the game, but it's good that they finally listened to the complaints over the years about how dark it is when they turn down the lights when the game starts. This should make the game streaming look better, too.

You betcha! And, as usual, he got there 30 seconds after the Convo opened.

The roster is just another rearranging deck chairs in Titanic. My hope for this season is we see a couple of youngsters that show promise.

RE: Huskies up 9 at half
Burno is starting his second year. To compare him to the sum total of Montgomery's career at NIU, or any other coach, is patently unfair.

Let's also not forget that even though it was never acknowledged, last year's load of "bigs" was to me at least an attempt to bring in some cash using whatever connections Burno had. (I even dug up a study or article somewhere about how P5s were/are paying $50,000+up as payday guarantees. ... Dammit. I copied but can't find anything when I want it.)

Some guys graduated/left and a bunch of newcomers are in. Because of the above -- was definitely not a normal o-o-c for NIU -- I almost feel like this is Burno's season 1. Anyway, to me this lighter season (1 DII exhibition and 2 DIIs in the o-o-c slate) is probably a better start for a new coach and a load of new players.

So sit back, enjoy and see what happens.

Let’s see what happens against UIS. If it’s like the McKendree embarrassment, it will be a very long season.

As with Monty’s teams this team likely will be horrible from 3pt also which means they will not win many games. In college basketball to win you generally need to make some 3’s

Interesting about programs getting paid to take guys off the P5 hands.

And, if I'm not mistaken, last years' "bigs" that he brought in was just Chris Osten, right? He inherited both Okanu and Makuoi from Montgomery when Monty tried to save his job by bringing in nothing but transfers instead of freshmen.

Anyway, whichever year it really is for Burno, it does need to be acknowledged that he as almost completely turned over the roster in 2 years. He inherited a pile of garbage (mostly) and the only thing remaining is Anthony Crump, which imo Burno has actually managed to polish up a bit.

Well...Crump and Drew Weimers which...like that matters.

I didn't necessarily like that he lost Kon and Myrick this past offseason but neither of those guys did much for me when I watched them and, we're probably better off with Coit than Kon and both Niederhäuser and Amos over Myrick. Kon signed on with Colorado Christian (D-II) and Myrick hasn't landed anywhere. I like both guys when he inked them but I like the guys he's brought in this year much more.

Anyway, this is now basically his roster (I'm convinced he's adopted Anthony Crump). It's not finished by any stretch of the imagination but he's got a lot to work with. It'll be interesting to see how Niederhäuser develops over the year. I really think Burno is going to nurture him along pretty slowly.

He's also got some interesting offers out for next year. One he already has a VC on is a 6'8" SF named Seck Zongo from The Patrick School, which is where Zarique Nutter went to HS. I'm starting to think Burno may have a connection there.

He's also got offers out to two JUCO 7 footers. I've not seen any video on any of them yet, but 7 foot is 7 foot (unless your name is Owen Hamilton, I suppose...)

Btw, to the best of my ability to decipher things, I think...if he avoids transfers...Burno could conceivably keep this roster intact for next year and still bring in 3 newcomers. The only "seniors" listed are Kaleb Thornton, Darweshi Hunter, Anthony Crump, and Drew Weimers.

Obviously Weimers is a redshirt so there's no scholarship to be gained or lost. But I believe Thornton, Hunter and Crump all qualify for the extra covid year (the comments from Crump have me convinced he's coming back for another year). Maybe Hunter doesn't. Either way, they could keep everyone (except maybe Hunter) and still get those scholarships to give out (obviously, he's already got a commit with Zongo, so that would leave 2 others). Granted, you always have to consider the guys who graduate and decide to move on at that point (which I never hold against them). But, even if he lost both Thornton and Hunter, it wouldn't be any kind of great loss. I'm not sure either of those guys should be starting now anyway (Russel may be better than Thornton right now and, while I'd probably start Thornton over Hunter, I like the size of Plintauskas and really want to watch him play at this level. I like the video I saw on him but that wasn't the best way to make a decision on him now).

As we all know, the transfer portal is a b!tch but this will be the year where we see what kind of loyalty Burno builds with his guys.

I might be wrong, but when PVK was talking about "bigs", I think he was referring to scheduling P5 teams, not "bigs" in a player vernacular.

Yes I was r.e. P5 payouts and comparing schedules. ... But Big Red's usual in-depth analysis of players is pretty interesting.

Coit hit two quick 3s and Amos got one in the last 5-6 minutes, which pretty much put NIU in a position to win. So NIU got them when it needed them.

I am more concerned about rebounding.

Overall McKendree out-rebounded NIU 47-36, but it's *what kind* of rebounds that matters ... and indicates a weakness that can lose games.

NIU got ZERO second-chance points; it had only 5 offensive rebounds.

McKendree had 17 second-chance points; it had 14 offensive rebounds.

That's 9 of the 11 difference in total rebounds ... and the points they got that came with it.

I'll ask -- maybe player guru Big Red -- does NIU have some guys who can get the damn ball under NIU's own basket?
