Jury is still out for me if Wes is a good coach/developer, but loving his recruiting so far. Definitely getting 4-5 years especially if recruiting at high level.

Listening to Wes in his presser he mentions several times that he prefers to scrimmage with coaches he knows so that he can work on situational things not play a structured game which he feels doesn't help when he has a roster he's trying to define. How meaningful could this have really been when at least 3 players had more fouls than they'd get in a "real" game? When did the fouls occur and how would that have impacted rotations and depth? It didn't sound like Purdue played a large # of players and with all of UCs different combos, who knows how much time the regulars played together. I think some are reading way too much into this.

The only 3 things that really caught my attention were Phinisee playing 27 minutes and only scoring 1 point (coaches direction or trying to get others involved) and thut Purdue shot over 30 FTs (although no comparison number was given for UC) and most importantly no significant injuries for the 'Cats, but nothing else seemed even mildly significant or worrisome. Wayyyyy too early and Wes will be fine.

Chad has stated a number of times that we were treating this like a real game and playing to win. According to Chad, Wes's plan from the beginning was treat the Ohio scrimmage as a glorified practice and the Purdue scrimmage as a real game.

RE: secret scrimmage
Chad gives a little more info on the state of the team on the most recent BCJ podcast. More based on his talks with those close to the team than his own observations. His comments on each phase are essentially.

- Offense: Much better than last year, a lot more options.

- Defense: Worse than last year, but slowly improving. Hopefully will get to at least average.

- Rebounding: The area we are worst at, especially defensive rebounding. Good rebounding is about mindset (wanting the ball) as much as physical attributes and we don't currently seem to have it. We need a Gary Clark/Tre Scott type who fights for every rebound, but we don't have one.

- An average defense that doesn't rebound well and gives up a lot of second chance opportunities is not a winning formula.

My take from his comment: The thing that differentiates our guys (especially at the 4/5) and earns them minutes may be rebounding. Especially if we can't develop that 4/5, guards/wings who rebound well will probably get the nod all other things being close to equal. That favors Phinisee, Newman and (possibly) Reed getting more minutes than anticipated.

Obviously none of us were there so I can't/won't debate that but I'll take the Coach at his own words. Some of it is dictated by how the other team plays it but if 3 guys each have more than 5 fouls the real game analogy appeared to be limited

RE: secret scrimmage
UC interior defense is what concerns me. Oguama and Lahkin both struggled to play defense without fouling. Koval and Ado, for as limited as they were on offense, they were both elite post defenders. Davenport is a huge mismatch for the other team on defense. I’ll admit I don’t know anything about Ezikpe. I doubt Tolentino play much this year.

I'm not sure anymore gets a full 4-5 years in the age of the transfer portal.

After the John Douchebag hire, Wes will get Five Years. Mick did. I realize that is not necessarily apples to apples but we had players leaving the team in droves before Wes arrived. He's steadied the ship, recruited well and JC hired him.

It appears that Purdue's freshman SG is the son of former Huggs assistant John Loyer.

Just read the article.......Didn't look too good for us.

Look for Miller’s seat to get warm if this year’s squad doesn’t show marked improvement. He says all the right things, but it looks like another year with subpar talent.

this Purdue team that beat UC by 13 points is a very good team. They have a lot of size, at least 2 playrs over 7 feet. One is 7'4. Purdue has a lot of talent returning along with some excellent transfers and will be one of the top teams in the Big 10 this season barring major injuries. UC has a lot of guards on the roster that might hurt us in offensive rebounding during the year. I hope not.
