So you are telling me that the defender needs to anticipate the slide, adjust his decision to make a play on the ball carrier and somehow stop himself mid tackle so he doesn't hit what used to be the ball carriers torso.

The slide and the stretch four are useless.

I hate that "slide". Another thing I always hated is what is and isn't intentional grounding and the "spike". The bulk of the rule changes over the last several decades were either to help the offenses and/or to protect the players. I get that. But that "slide" is completely unfair to someone just trying to play defense.

First of all, I still like coach Lewis and am grateful for what he has accomplished given the schedule. Still I think maybe we should have looked for an experienced qb in the transfer portal.

I was really hopeful for this team after the showing in Georgia, but for whatever reason we haven't put together a complete game. It really demonstrates how good Crum was at this offense. Kicking game is very disappointing and we make every MAC QB look stellar. Looks like OU will be in Detroit - by beating UB they did what we needed, but we didn't. They have improved greatly as the season has progressed, I'll give their coach COY even though it's early.

I hope we win out but it seems like a stretch given the offenses we face on the road.

I expressed my thoughts on the drop off from an experienced Crum to a new QB and several people here professed there would be no drop off at all. Silly to think a kid that got NFL looks and is now a paid professional could be replaced in-house and there wouldn’t be some growing pains.07-coffee3

As for the kicking, the kicker started out rough last year and then rebounded to have a pretty good season. Came into this season with all kind of hope, then missed on some make able kicks. Those 2 misses last night obviously hurt on the scoreboard in a tight game but also affected how the rest of the game would be played which also hurt us.

Since we're going in on the slide rules, let me join. I've always thought the idea of sliding feet first in college is super dumb. In college you're down as soon as you touch the ground, so on that play last night he could've dove head first, picked up a couple extra yards (because he wouldn't be down until he actually touches the ground), and they still wouldn't have been allowed to hit him.

I think I agreed with you. I did say back after Idaho that Lewis had a gift with a talented QB in Dustin. If he's going to make the step up he needs to coach up a QB to run this offense well. I think Colin can still get there, but he will need a lot of work.
Speak of this offense, if it is going to run well we need a solid RPO guy (like everyone else needs).
As far as a the game overall... 03-puke
Aside from the slide was also the throw-catch-throw, another play he ran out when he could have slid and picked up 2 or 3 more. The fair catch that was caught by someone else was also a little humiliating. Missed FG, already mentioned. I've been hard on the defense... That's not going to change. They were better, but as I've mentioned if you're nickname is South Catchers, there needs to be more. A lot more. I still saw too many large chunks of yards that were given up. Again, they improved, but still well below expected.
The MGF sounded great and it was cool Canton Local could make a weeknight trip. Student turnout was better than I expected.

Edit: Neither is 4th and 1
Cooper is a very good back, and he should get a lot of touches, but we ride him way too hard and make it too predictable when it’s 3rd or 4th and short. We have other options and should be rotating guys through. When you go through the different RBs with different skill sets it makes it harder to defend than when you make yourself one dimensional because one guy seemingly gets 95% of the carries. Rotate through Cooper, Bradford and Garcia and change up the pace with their different styles.

RE: 2022 Football Week 9 vs Balls Tate
IMO rotating other guys in is something we've lacked at WR for a few years now too. We run a ton of plays and give our WRs a ton of targets but the target share is usually only split between a couple guys. In the past it's been ok, but this year we're being bit by it. I assume the high usage could have contributed to Walker and Cephas getting hurt, but also we're suffering from their backups not having received much experience. My perception is that our WR group us usually pretty loaded so we should try to share the wealth a bit more. Trell Harris looked pretty capable last night. Wonder if he should've been getting more chances to spell the big guys earlier. He's already played 5 games so his redshirt is burnt anyways.

An example of this was last year. We only had 4 recievers get more than 10 catches. Two slot receivers (Poke and Johnson) and two wide outs (Abram and Cephas). Did we have any other wide outs capable of taking some of the load off our top two? Well, the next highest number of catches from a wideout was Walker at 5. Unless he went through and insane metamorphosis it seems he was probably underutilized. In fairness he was limited to 4 games so they could redshirt him but still, 5 catches in 4 games isn't much involvement.

We also had a QB that worked well outside of the pocket. I'm not trying to be hard on Schlee in this thread. I do believe that he can be the QB Crumm was, but this is not his year.

RE: 2022 Football Week 9 vs Balls Tate
A lot of good football players on this team.
However lack of depth and experienced players has
caused the results. Once the injuries began piling
up we were unable to overcome. Seemed like we
got thru non-conf part of schedule relatively healthy but it
has piled up since. Cumulative effect???
I’m not qualified to be knowledgeable of cumulative
effect of our schedule related to injuries but it sure didn’t help.

Coaches just need to try and recruit quality players .

Coach Lewis has to keep telling the story. Progress certainly from
where we were before he arrived

Go Flashes.

I’m pretty sure when people like Terry Pluto, Paul Hoynes and Mary Kay Cabot retire (the first two will go pretty soon I’m afraid) we will be an order of magnitude worse than today.

True. If they don't replace him, I'll cancel my subscription, as the coverage of Kent State athletics is the only reason I subscribe.

Just read yesterday that Marla Ridenaur accepted a buyout from ABJ. Said she is not retiring but she couldn’t keep up with the digital press work demands. She wasn’t my favorite but she was a local beat reporter who covered Cleveland teams.
