Poor Ody. It's in his head now. It's a shame because he is one of the few physical inside guys UC has.
These long stretches of little to no scoring need to get fixed.

At times, Houston can look invincible. 25(Walker?) is a great player.

How many times did Lahkin or Ody catch the ball under the basket, and instead of going up for the dunk/layup, they would wait for the defender and then miss the shot and not get fouled. Those plays made my blood boil. As offensively challenged as those guys are, they need to covert on those easy points.

It bothered me too. Ody did it 2-3 times...twice when he was completely alone and allowed the defense to get there.

I would not call Lahkin offensively challenged. They made him hesitant in the first half with the speed and length of both the guys on him and the help. I thought he adjusted and really started going strong in the second half (which got him to the foul line). He had an efficient 16 points. He's scored 16 against X, He scored 17 against Arizona, He scored 12 against OSU (leading scorer, team only had 53). He's not only been a consistent offensive player, he's done it against the best teams on our schedule.

Lakhin scored 12 points in the last 10 minutes of the game, after UC was down 20. He turned it on once it was over.

He had a tough first half and adjusted to the speed of the game / size and athleticism of the houston defenders, and how Houston defended him. Houston was still playing their starters and the game got down to 10 with what looked like a Houston turnover...late whistle called JD for a nonexistent foul and then Houston hit a 3 from the corner. I'd say Lahkin's effort helped keep them in striking distance until that play.

Scoring from the charity stripe was all that kept UC in it in the second half. Lots of work remains for Wes but Houston is very impressive and may be the best team in the country.

If I could add two parts to the Bearcat machine right now it would be an enforcer down low--a guy who won't back down from contact and can get 10 rebounds a night. And a reliable "go to" scorer: a Kilpatrick or Cumberland who possess a great shot but can also find ways to score when guarded closely. When you have a consistent leading scorer, it opens up looks for the other four guys on the floor. I was hoping Nolley might be that guy and he shows flashes. But I noticed late in the second half when he came in I think he had a dozen points...and zero rebounds. Skillings seemed unafraid to mix it up under the basket and has a nose for the ball. He's going to be special.

I'll say more about the trip once in Houston, but just wanted to report on Skyline:

As someone from the southwest, it takes you for a loop. However, as someone from Houston it is similar to having viet cajun for the first time. It is very different, but still good.

5 star Flory Bidugna was at the game last night. Wes had to be looking over at him and gesturing "see???" every few minutes lol.

Good news, as I was wondering if his interest in UC had dropped off of late. He certainly got a preview of the competitive level of play we'll see most nights in the Big 12 and the passion of UC fans when an elite visiting team hits town.

I always tell people from outside the area: Just forget the word "chili" in the name and enjoy it as its own style of food.

I work with many transplanted New Yorkers who fall into the trap. It's not like the kind of chili that they're used to, so they hate it. I always tell them that you can't eat it like traditional chili. Do a coney or a 3 way to start out. Once you get used to it add the onion, beans or hot sauce. Skyline isn't meant to be eaten out of a bowl like a Tex-Mex version.

The Big Badunga would fix a lot of ailments. Move Vic to a traditional 4 and that would be a formidable front court.

Outrebounding Houston is very encouraging. I watched them play SMU Thursday and was wondering how UC would get any. Just too many unforced errors though. I thought the shot selection was better, but they were missing open looks.

I thought a lot of the "unforced" errors were an elite defense with elite athleticism, making plays nobody else we've played makes. All the best teams we've played are significantly better on offense than defense. Houston was different than anything we've seen on that end.

Still frustrating. Still something I hate to see. But Houston deserves a lot of credit.

Don't get me wrong - Houston is legit and have their best team since phi slama jama, but UC could have done a better job of taking care of the ball. By unforced errors, I'm referring to the weak passes that turned into pick sixes. Yeah, Houston is good at anticipating the pass and jumping the passing lane, but that doesn't make it a given that it has to happen.

Don't get me wrong, I agree it was frustrating and doesn't have to be a given.

My general point was even the really damn good teams we played didn't prepare us for Houston and what they could do defensively. We haven't even played a team that can simulate a knockoff/lesser version of what Houston does on that end. I think a large part of it was that those passes have been there all year and just weren't against Houston.

Hopefully they'll have a better understanding at Houston. I could see us lowering our turnovers and preventing those same runouts. Of course, I don't see us rebounding at Houston the way we rebounded Sunday.

DDJ, MAW, and Nolley had a bunch of the turnovers. How many times do those guys have to play Houston before they'll understand their defensive intensity and quickness and anticipation and whatnot? UC played scared and passively. I didn't expect a win, but UC didn't compete like I hoped. That's 7 straight Ls to Houston all by double digits.

I remember a stat used to always be trotted out how we've only lost to Houston twice in like 30+ games. I guess that would have been at the end of Mick's tenure. How times have changed.

From a Houston perspective, the group that I was with was shocked that Lahkin was not frequently fed the ball in the first half. Coogs have struggled against pure centers this year and he seemed (and showed in the second half) capable of performing.
