The one I've been on goes through a bunch of huge underground lagering chambers from the 19th century that people forgot about until a city worker almost fell into one in the mid 2000s.

The Underground tour is decent. I’ve heard the gangster tour is really good. Both require outdoor walking. I wonder if they do cold weather tours - I dunno.

Cincinnati -NKY, actually - is at the northern end of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Also, great bourbon bars.

I’ve long wanted to do the Brew Bus.

The sign museum is off the beaten path, but I’ve heard that’s cool.

Reds Hall of Fame and underground Railroad Museum are at The Banks near the river.

Plenty of bars/restaurants at The Banks/Downtown/OTR, and a free streetcar runs through all of them - which is good if the weather is bad or your Texas ass cannot handle the cold. To see the area, I actually put in-laws from TX on it just to ride the loop and give a quick tour. They dug the architecture that doesn’t exist in TX.

Main Strasse in Covington, KY also has bars and restaurants - definitely a different vibe than you’d find in Houston.

I'll get scalped for this, but, as on out of towner.... You can probably skip skyline.

It is something of a hot debate over where you can get "the best" or "the most authentic" Cincinnati style chili. Skyline and Gold Star are the mass produced chains...it's like getting "sea food" from Captain D's or Long John Sllver's.

Personally, if you want to REALLY experience good Chili, you've got to go to a sit-down place like Blue Ash or Camp Washington. Do it right and get the 5-way.

I'm sure that now there will be a flood of suggestions as to which eatery has the essential recipe and experience.

If you wonder, why the streetcar is free, it is because no one would pay to ride it.

I've been told from a fellow UH alum that Skyline is necessary for the experience.

BTW if you're ever in Houston, I HIGHLY recommend going to a good Bahn Mi place (or Vietnamese food in general). Those Vietnamese sandwiches are so damn good.

Le's Pho downtown Cincy makes a mean Bahn Mi if it's still there. I haven't worked downtown in a while.

Since you're coming in January you should definitely do Skyline. It's a great cold weather meal. I recommend the one by campus in Clifton. It always tastes the best there, but the downtown ones aren't bad either. Make sure you have at least one 3,4, or 5 way, and one cheese coney with everything.

Ridership is actually way up. I was at Rhinegeist during Blink and didn’t board because the cars were packed. Got my steps in walking back to my car on 7th.

Cincinnati-style chili is definitely unique. So is goetta (although I never had that until I was an adult - it's nothing special).

But there's another local specialty that most Cincinnatians don't realize is unavailable in the rest of the USA: mettwurst. It's a type of German sausage.

Cincinnatians think of "brats and metts" at a neighborhood BBQ. They're sold in almost every grocery store.

Metts are at most concession stands in Cincinnati-area sports stadiums/arenas.

I've asked far and wide outside of Cincy for mettwurst and only found it one place (a German sausage shop in a San Diego suburb run by a couple of old ladies from Magdeburg - although Google tells me that it is now permanently closed). Most butchers I've asked have never even heard of it.

* German food in general is really good in Cincinnati. My favorite is Mecklenburg Gardens, which is a few blocks off UC's campus.

Mecklenburg has a shuttle that goes to and from games. I know Indiana fans who went there before the football game, got to mix with UC fans, and had a great time. I understand it’s an older crowd

Yes, Blink was enormous, but ridership has been up significantly even before that.

I’ve watch quite a few travel vlogs and for whatever reason, outsiders like to include the streetcar in their videos

Mecks get their metts from Wassler's over on the W. Side. Dam fine spicy mett. Excellent beer selection also.
Metts can't be unique to Cincy? BTW a **** ton of German immigrated to Texas also.

Remember that Cincinnati was settled by different Germans than other cities. Cincinnati was largely settled by refugees from the 1848 uprisings - 30,000 of them came to to OTR alone in '48 & '49, boosting Cincinnati's population to 110,000 by 1850. That was the last major settlement wave in Cincinnati; the city never grew more than 39% over the course of a decade again.

The 48ers were city folk, extremely well-educated & liberal & politically active. A high portion were Jewish (which is why Reform Judaism started in Cincinnati). Very different from the Palatinate Germans who settled PA (mostly Mennonites or allied sects) or the later waves of farmers & lower-middle class economic refugees who nearly doubled the size of St. Louis in the 1860s or Milwaukee in 1890s.

It's possible that there's metts in other cities. I just haven't found them anywhere I've looked.

Although other than Cincy, I've only lived in 4 other cities/towns as an adult.

Has anyone else had a mett outside the Cincinnati metro?

For the few who do not know, it is called Over The Rhine because where Central Parkway is used to be a canal which reminded the Germans of the Rhine. So north of the canal was Over the Rhine.

All of the USA was settled by different Germans. Good video.

BUMP!
Alright you pinche gatos osos, buddy of mine and I are headed y'all's way this weekend.

Currently we plan on checking out the Reds' stadium on Saturday and either hitting up the Underground Railroad Museum or a distillery tour at New Riff. Thoughts? Lunch and dinner options are open, as well as late night shenanigans.

Sunday go see Bengals tailgating in the morning and then walk to campus. Lunch at Skyline and then chill at a bar until closer to tip. Post game, no idea.

Might drop by Hall of Justice at some point to check out the architecture.

We both fly out Monday. Thoughts? Reserved an Airbnb downtown.

Note : I get in late Friday, but the buddy of mine gets in Friday afternoon. Anywhere you would suggest he go to hang out/see in the evening?

Dude, if you're going to give Cincinnati chili a shot, do Skyline. Gold Star is garbage. I don't even like that.

And if you, just take it for what it is. It's when people start comparing these things that are labled "chili" that the arguing starts. They're really just different things.

If you can get into Jeff Ruby's by fountain square, I'd recommend it. It'd probably be difficult to get a reservation at this point.

As far as night light goes, the Banks and Over the Rhine are your best bets. OTR is more Hipster/Dangerous. The Banks is more corporate. Just depends on what you are into. Both have plenty of bars.

If you are inside the loop, a place that is off the beaten path, but excellent and family owned, is Huynh in East Downtown (note: they will either move or close in the future due to freeway rerouting project. Not sure what their future holds)

If you want Bahn Mi's, Roostar and Cali Sandwich are great options. My old go-to closed during covid. :(

Pho: The inside the loop staple is Pho Saigon in midtown.

Note : If you want to go crazy, just head to China/Vietnamese town on the southwest side of town in Belliare. If you want a truly unique food experience, that is the place to go.
