OPENING KICK
• Navy (2-5, 2-3 in the AAC) and Temple (2-5, 0-3 in the AAC) meet for the 17th time overall and the sixth time as American Athletic Conference foes when the two square off on Saturday afternoon (3:30 pm) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (34,000) in Annapolis. Saturday’s contest is presented by First Command and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
• Saturday is Senior Day and Homecoming for the Mids. Navy has lost the last two Senior Day games (38-35 vs. East Carolina in 2021 and 19-6 vs. Tulsa in an empty Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium due to COVID in 2020). Prior to that, the Mids had won 17-consecutive games on Senior Day.
• Navy has lost 4 of the last 5 Homecoming games, including the last 2. Navy is 44-28 all-time on Homecoming.
• Saturday is Navy’s final home game of the year. Navy is the only team in the FBS that will not play a home game in the month of November. The Mids have 2 neutral site games (vs. Notre Dame in Baltimore and Army in Philadelphia) and 2 road games (at Cincinnati and at UCF), in addition to a bye on Thanksgiving weekend remaining. It marks the first time since 1988 that Navy will not have a home game in the month of November. Remarkably, in 1988, Navy played its final home game on Oct. 1 vs. Yale and then played 4 games on the road (Air Force, Pitt, Syracuse and South Carolina) and 2 neutral site games (Notre Dame in Baltimore and Army in Philadelphia) to finish 3-8.
• Navy defeated Temple 38-14 last year in Philadelphia and handed the Owls a 31 29 loss in Annapolis during the 2020 COVID season.
• Navy starts just 4 seniors on offense and defense, a mark that is tied with Cal, North Texas and Temple for the third fewest in the country.
• Since the start of the 2014 season, only the AAC, the ACC and the Big 12 have had all of their respective teams ranked at least once in the Associated Press poll.
• This is the 142nd year of Navy football. The Mids have produced an all-time record of 731-590-57.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
2-5 Overall | 0-3 AAC
Head Coach: Stan Drayton
• Under first-year head coach Stan Drayton, Temple enters Saturday’s game with a 2-5 record and an 0-3 mark in the American Athletic Conference.
• The Owls own victories over Lafayette (30-14) and UMass (28-0) and have lost to Duke (30-0), Rutgers (16-14), Memphis (24-3), UCF (70-13) and Tulsa (26-17).
• The Temple offense is led by freshman quarterback E.J. Warner, son of former NFL great Kurt Warner, who has completed 109 of his 201 passes for 1,236 yards with 7 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
• Temple’s offense has done a great job of protecting Warner, ranking third in the country in fewest sacks allowed (0.6/gm).
• Warner’s favorite target is senior Jose Barbon, who has 35 catches for 484 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt senior and Georgia Tech transfer Adonicas Sanders is next with 29 catches for 352 yards and a touchdown.
• The Temple running game is led by redshirt sophomore Edward Saydee, who has carried the ball 71 times for 229 yards and a touchdown.
• Defensively, Temple is led by redshirt sophomore linebacker Jordan Magee (45 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble) and redshirt sophomore linebacker Yvandy Rigby (43 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble).
• Redshirt junior outside linebacker Layton Jordan and sophomore defensive lineman Darian Varner are tied for eighth in the country in sacks (0.93/gm), while Jordan is third (1.7) and Varner fourth (1.6) nationally in tackles for loss per game.
• Outside of the blip against UCF, the Temple defense has been very good. It ranks second in the country in sacks (4.0/ gm), fifth in tackles for a loss per game (8.7), 10th in fourth down defense (.292), 11th in defensive touchdowns (2) and 22nd in passing yards allowed (190.4). Throw out the UCF game and the Temple defense is giving up just 18.5 points per game, which would be good enough for 20th in the country.
• Temple’s special teams have also been solid, ranking fifth nationally in blocked punts with 3 and 14th in punt return defense (2.6 yds/return). De’Von Fox is the best punt blocker in the nation, blocking all 3 for Temple this year.
• Drayton’s team has also been very disciplined, ranking 20th in fewest penalties per game (5.0) and 24th in fewest penalty yards per game (43.1).
• Temple has 33 transfers on its roster, including 17 from the autonomy 5.

GAME DAY FESTIVITIES
• The Navy football team will arrive at the Blue Angel on the West (Blue) side of the stadium at approximately 1:00 pm. The team will walk down the sidewalk and through NavyFest before walking to thetunnel. Fans are invited to stand on both sides of the sidewalk to cheer on the players.
• The March-On of the Brigade of Midshipmen will begin at 3:06 pm.
• The National Anthem will take place at 3:16:30 am, followed by a flyover at the conclusion of the national anthem.
• Saturday’s flyover will feature 2 Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornets from the “RAMPAGERS” of Strike Fighter Squadron EIGHT THREE based out of Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va. Piloting the lead aircraft will be Lt. Andy “Good Boy” Bonn, USNA Class of 2016. The wing aircraft will be piloted by Lt. Cmdr. Ben “Roxy” Fox, USNA Class of 2009. The RAMPAGERS are one of the Navy’s premier strike fighter squadrons. The squadron’s mission, as part of Carrier Air Wing THREE, is to serve as the tip of the spear for the carrier fleet to include air superiority, strike, maritime superiority, and close air support in defense of our nation’s interests.
• Navy will take the field at 3:28:20, while Temple will follow at 3:29 pm
• Kickoff on Saturday is slated for 3:32 pm.
• Please note there is a chance that everything will be pushed back 5 minutes if the first game on CBS Sports Network runs long. That decision will be made before the 60:00 clock starts.
• Between the first and the second quarters, the wrestling team will be recognized.
• The Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps will perform at halftime.
• The pilots from the pregame flyover will be recognized between the third and fourth quarters.
• Following the game, Navy’s alma mater, Navy Blue & Gold, will be played as the team stands at attention in front of the Brigade of Midshipmen. It is one of the best traditions in all of sports.

Yup.
As the notes say - pretty rare, since it's the first time since I was a Midshipman.

It's also the product of some of our schedule specifics.
- Notre Dame won't ever be a true home game, so in a usual even-numbered year that's one of four November Saturdays gone. (Our South Bend games are usually end of October, which I think is somehow tied in with their USC/Stanford rotations).
- Our membership agreement with the Big East / American stipulated no home games Thanksgiving weekend, so that's a second of four November weekends gone. (We did reschedule Memphis postponement to that Saturday in COVID 2020, but the avoidance is based on the Brigade and other attendance, so that was a special case).
- With Army post-CCG we have an extra bye week that can go Thanksgiving if it fits the conference's needs -- which makes sense with 11 teams but less so with an even number.
- Anyway - two November weekends left for home games, and definitely conference games. This year, the conference scheduled them both away, while we had three of five October weekends (three of four available for conference scheduling, with Air Force always first week of October) at home.
- October and this week's game bring to mind another stipulation: we have one weekend set as a home game in advance, for Homecoming. It makes our Homecoming game a conference game, but opponent is up to the conference. This year we get Temple, last year we got Cincinnati

My take is that while Navy is favored by a bunch and that is good, this is not a gimme. I have seen only a little of Temple this year, and while the end results were not great, a lot of the individual bits are not bad.

If Navy comes out and executes well, gets ahead a couple scores, it could snowball. However, if we make a few mistakes and let Temple hang around and build confidence, this could go the other way.

Go Navy - beat the Owls!

I'm in Vegas, and the sportsbook downstairs says Navy -14...and I am staying away from that.

(This will be the third NMCMS game I've missed since the start of the 2015 season)
